Future Cup champion Dale Jarrett makes his only Cup start of the 1986 season (and first in nearly 2 years). DJ, in just his 4th career start, made it only 69 laps before a vibration put him and Mike Curb's #98 Busch Pontiac on the trailer. Tim Richmond started second and lead the first 21 laps but faded and had to settle for 6th Morgan Shepard had a strong car, leading 19 laps early but issues with the brakes ended his day. 2. 18fan posted: 03.10.2009 - 12:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Darrell Waltrip sweeps the weekend at Bristol. 3. As owner Bill Terry left the sport Kulwicki bought the team and took over the literal single car #35 Quincy's Steak House Ford operation. 7. Blogger nascarman has a great story on it with a clip... racing-reference.info/showblog?id=3229 ...Bristol lacked a spectator tunnel at the time of this race and a woman tried to walk across the track at the start of session just as J.D. McDuffie was starting his run. McDuffie was to be the first car to qualify but was waved off because of the fan, he was allowed to cool the engine on his #70 Pontiac and attempt another run later where he would post a time fast enough to make the race. 8. Terry Labonte was the only other driver to finish on the lead lap, coming home nearly 9 seconds behind Darrell Waltrip in second place. The result was a breath of fresh air for Labonte, whose team had switched from an uncompetitive Oldsmobile to a Chevrolet for this race. Labonte led 13 laps and never strayed far from the top-10 all night. Geoff Bodine finished a lap off the pace in third. Bodine was easily one of the fastest cars all night, winning the pole and leading 124 laps. But poor pit strategy would trap him a lap down. Dale Earnhardt led 71 laps early on and looked to be a contender, only to fall a lap down after he was wrecked on the frontstretch by Bobby Hillin. Earnhardt would recover to finish in fourth, despite the nose of his car being caved-in. Harry Gant was fast throughout the night, coming home a lap down in fifth. The highlight of the race for Gant was an incredible save he made after getting turned sideways out of turn 4 by Ricky Rudd. Somehow, Gant managed to keep his Chevy straight and did not lose position. Tim Richmond led the opening 21 laps and looked to be a contender, but mechanical issues caused him to fade. Thanks to attrition, Richmond came away with a sixth-place finish, two laps down. Richard Petty ran inside the top-10 throughout the night, battling back from a flat tire to finish three laps down in seventh. Bobby Allison led 70 laps and could have come away with a top-5 or possibly a win had tire issues not struck him late in the running. He finished 4 laps down in eighth. Bobby Hillin Jr. fought back from a spin and a run-in with Dale Earnhardt to finish in ninth, 5 laps off the pace. Alan Kulwicki made his final start for car owner Bill Terry before taking over the team. Kulwicki led two laps and ran within the top-10 for much of the latter half of the race, ultimately coming home 6 laps down in tenth. Neil Bonnett struggled with handling issues throughout the race, ultimately handing the reigns over to Kyle Petty when his ribs, still sore from his Pocono crash, became too much of a bother. Petty drove Bonnet's car to an eleventh-place finish, 9 laps down. Tommy Ellis made his final start at Bristol in a Cup car, coming home 12 laps down in twelfth. Michael Waltrip was never really a factor throughout the race, finishing 13 laps down in thirteenth. Rusty Wallace could have been a contender, but transmission issues caused him to fall well off the pace. He would come home 16 laps down in fourteenth. Dave Marcis stayed out of the way of the leaders, finishing 16 laps down in fifteenth. Buddy Arrington was never able to fully get up to speed, ultimately finishing 23 laps down in sixteenth. Joe Ruttman struggled with mechanical issues throughout the night, finishing 24 laps down in seventeenth. Eddie Bierschwale took over the reins of the #17 Roger Hamby entry for this event. Mechanical woes ensued, with Bierschwale pulling off track at one point after an apparent engine failure. His team managed to get the car back on track, with Bierschwale coming home 56 laps down in eighteenth. Bill Elliott suffered a major malfunction in his engine early, which caused him to spend many laps in the pits repairing it. With no chance of winning, Elliott simply rode out the night, finishing 75 laps down in nineteenth. D.K. Ulrich was easily the slowest car on track, finishing 91 laps down in twentieth after hitting the wall late. Busch Series regular Brad Teague made a rare appearance in the Cup series, retiring after 318 laps with brake failure. Morgan Shepherd led 19 laps early until tire issues knocked him many laps down. He would eventually fall out of the race with brake failure after 315 laps. Ricky Rudd was running inside the top-10 when he slapped the wall on lap 251, knocking him out of the race. J.D. McDuffie had a strange experience in qualifying when a woman walked out on track during McDuffie's first run. The race itself was just as eventful, with McDuffie spinning in turn 4 and eventually falling out with rear end problems. Chet Fillip was unable to translate his excellent qualifying effort into a good result, dropping out of the race with a broken rear end after 215 laps. Rick Wilson was involved in a strange crash when he was spun head-on into the frontstretch wall. Despite the obviously damaged car traveling slowly around the track, NASCAR waited until several laps had passed to throw the caution. Jimmy Means would last just 70 laps until an axle broke on his Pontiac. Ken Schrader was running well early until he spun into the outside wall on lap 72, putting him out of the running. Dale Jarrett, fresh off a fourth-place finish in the previous nights Busch Series race, made his lone Cup start of the 1986 season in Mike Curb's #98, replacing Ron Bouchard. Jarrett would make it 69 laps until a vibration put him behind the wall. Kyle Petty's night ended before it even began, as he suffered engine failure just 9 laps into the race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
