Also his first laps led as an owner/driver. Davey Allison's 1st top 5 in the #28! 4. myself posted: 03.15.2007 - 2:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) For some reason, rumors started circulating after this race that this would be Rudd's final year driving for Bud Moore (which it was), & that in 88', he was gonna drive for Cale (which didn't happen; Dale Jarrett got that ride). 5. I don't own them but they are good. 8. Gregg33 posted: 01.21.2010 - 1:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Benny Parsons was leading with 8 laps to go before being passed by Rudd. Would have been Benny's final win. 9. It always seemed like they'd rather be at an Indy Car race and they were forced to be there. Cope sure hit that wall hard, folded the back of his car up pretty bad. Poor Harry Gant got the worst of it that race though. The race itself was pretty boring until Earnhardt had electrical problems. Pretty cool to see the Motorcraft car win the Motorcraft 500. 16. jensenators posted: 03.06.2015 - 3:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just watched the abc broadcast on youtube. The unknown caution was for a crash to jimmy means. when they came back from commercial they showed his car being towed to the garage. also the 14 of foyt, and the 75 of bonnett were involved in the big crash. they showed foyt's 4 flat tires after he pitted, and bonnett had an onboard camera that showed him spinning. 17. In that same span he would have led 1,598 laps. Easily one of the most dominant 7 weeks of all time in NASCAR. 18. Once he had some new glass to look through Yarborough rallied back to lead a few laps and finish in the top-10. 23. Rudd ran inside the top-5 all afternoon, leading only the final 7 laps of the race. Benny Parsons claimed his second runner-up finish of the season, leading 43 laps for good measure. This was easily the best performance of Parsons' season, as he fought back from an early spin to tie his best finish of the year. Rusty Wallace was a constant threat inside the top-10 throughout the race, being one of the few drivers who could run up front with Earnhardt and Elliott. Wallace led 26 laps and finished third for the second-straight week. Terry Labonte grabbed a second-straight top-5 finish by coming home in fourth. Labonte led 2 laps and stayed out on old tires on the final restart in an effort to swipe a victory. Unfortunately, his tires just couldn't hold off the rest of the leaders. Davey Allison quietly picked up the first top-5 finish of his cup career, finishing a lap down in fifth. Darrell Waltrip struggled all race weekend, running outside of the top-20 through much of the race. Thanks to the attrition, and narrowly missing a crash with Cale Yarborough, Waltrip came home 1 lap down in sixth. Neil Bonnett suffered minor damage in an early crash, caving in the side of his Pontiac. Still sore from his crash at Richmond a week earlier, Bonnett toughed it out to finish a lap down in seventh. Cale Yarborough shattered his windshield in an early crash and was later collected in a second wreck with Richard Petty and Geoff Bodine. Still, the owner-driver would end up having his best performance of 1987, leading 7 laps and finishing in eighth, 1 lap off the pace. Kyle Petty managed to convert a dismal qualifying effort into a top-10, finishing 1 lap down in ninth. Morgan Shepherd never seemed to have the speed to run with the leaders, yet he still capitalized on the attrition to finish in tenth, 2 laps down. Rick Wilson and the Morgan-McClure team made their second start of the season, finishing 2 laps off the pace in eleventh. Ron Bouchard suffered minimal damage in the pileup on lap 88, limping home to finish in twelfth, 3 laps down. Sterling Marlin and Hagan Racing had major sponsorship woes entering this race, as primary sponsor Piedmont Airlines had been bought out by US Air. With the team's future uncertain, Marlin quietly ran a lackluster race, finishing 3 laps down in thirteenth. Richard Petty led a lap under caution and was running as high as fifth before he was collected in a multi-car crash with a few laps left. After several laps in the pits for repairs, Petty returned to the track, finishing 3 laps off the pace in fourteenth. Geoffrey Bodine was having a great day until the front of his car was smashed up in a late-race crash. Bodine returned to the track minus his hood, finishing 5 laps down in fifteenth. Dale Earnhardt looked to be en route to his third consecutive victory, leading 196 laps from the pole. But with just a handful of laps to go, Earnhardt suddenly slowed on track with an alternator problem. The Intimidator would finish down in sixteenth, 6 laps down. Tommy Ellis, never a major threat on the superspeedways, turned in a solid effort by finishing 6 laps down in seventeenth. H.B. Bailey made his first start of 1987 and promptly picked up a top-20 finish, coming home 7 laps down in eighteenth. Bobby Allison led 2 laps early and looked to be a strong candidate for a top-10. But he was unable to avoid the lap 88 pileup and busted up the front of his Buick, finishing 8 laps off the pace in nineteenth. A.J. Foyt narrowly avoided a head-on collision with the wall during the pileup when he blew a tire on some debris. Foyt never seemed to recover from the accident, finishing 9 laps down in twentieth. This was actually his best finish of 1987, showing just how rough the year was for the living legend. It was another brutal run for David Sosebee, who finished 11 laps down in twenty-first. For Sosebee, it would be his last start of the year, as team owner Roger Hamby had seen enough. Sosebee would be replaced with a handful of drivers for the rest of the 1987 campaign. Rookie Steve Christman found himself the new lead driver at Winkle Motorsports following J.D. McDuffie's departure. Christman stayed out of trouble to finish 14 laps down in twenty-second. D.K. Ulrich seemed to be en route to a possible top-20 finish when a ball joint broke with less than 10 laps to go, sending Ulrich into the outside wall. Bobby Hillin Jr. had a truly awful race, struggling with speed and mechanical problems throughout the day. Hillin limped home 26 laps off the pace in twenty-fourth. Mike Potter replaced Charlie Baker in the #93 for this race, as Baker had prior commitments. Potter was brutally slow, finishing 37 laps down in twenty-fifth. He will receive the "NewGuyOnTheBlock Snail Award" for this race. Ken Ragan had a great run going before ignition issues sent him to the garage after 281 laps. Phil Parsons dropped out of the top-10 in points following a late engine failure in this race, retiring after 261 laps. Bill Elliott was the only driver who really seemed to have a chance at beating Earnhardt, leading 22 laps and running second to Big E throughout the first half of the race. But a series of unfortunate events would send Elliott to the garage. First, he had to make a second pitstop under green to address a cut tire. Then, after falling a lap down, Elliott suddenly slowed on lap 256 with a blown engine, ending his day. Ken Schrader continued to impress in the Junie Donlavey #90, leading 22 laps and running upfront with the leaders before an engine failure on lap 221 sent him spinning into the wall. Rookie Mark Stahl spent over a third of the race in the garage with engine issues. He would eventually return to the track, finishing 120 laps down in thirtieth. Dave Marcis was collected in the lap 88 pileup, and despite the best efforts of his crew in repairing his Chevy, he would eventually drop out with handling issues after 169 laps. Jimmy Means barely made it to the initial start due to a mechanical problem. Means made it 157 laps into the race until he crashed out. Alan Kulwicki was the cause of the pileup on lap 88 when he blew his motor, spinning into the inside wall as 8 other cars were collected behind him. Harry Gant DNF counter: 4. Gant suffered the worst of the lap 88 pileup as both ends of his Chevy were completely destroyed. Gant himself was briefly knocked out and suffered a lacerated tongue in the crash. Lake Speed suffered fuel pump problems from the get-go, eventually retiring after 73 laps due to the issue. Still, Speed was just happy to have made the show, as he failed to qualify for the previous race at Richmond. Derrike Cope walked away from a vicious crash on lap 65 when he spun entering turn 4 and backed it hard into the outside wall. To make matters worse, Cope then shot into the inside wall, briefly getting air when he struck the barrier. Cope was uninjured. Greg Sacks was running well in the opening laps when his engine expired after 53 laps. Buddy Baker was a dark horse to possibly win, but engine woes put him behind the wall after 36 laps. Michael Waltrip won the ARCA race on Saturday but was out with a leaking transmission on Sunday after just 33 laps. Waltrip was running well before the issues struck, getting up into the top-15. J.D. McDuffie returned to fielding his own equipment after driving for Tom Winkle in the first 3 races of the year. McDuffie struggled during the race weekend, qualifying slowest and dropping out with engine failure after 16 laps. Connie Saylor stalled on the initial start, retiring after 3 laps with an expired motor. Poor Eddie Bierschwale never made it to the start, as his car was pushed behind the wall during the pace laps with mechanical failure. 25. rateus posted: 02.05.2021 - 7:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Driver change - Starting line-up shows Charlie Baker qualified the #93 before turning it over to Mike Potter for race day. The 2 listed provisional starters are Rick Knoop and Bobby Wawak, both in Chevys - they were replaced in the final line-up by DK Ulrich and JD McDuffie. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
