Had he not crashed, some believe he would have been offered a ride with a high-profile Cup team. 3. This race, '89 at Dover, '90 at Darlington, and also a frightening crash in '93 at Talladega. The only plus side to his crashes was that he established himself as one of the better television commentators. In the booth, he was the way Darrell Waltrip is now. 5. Talk about having more money than they know what to do w/! 8. Mark posted: 04.04.2007 - 2:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Means was driving a car owned by Rick Hendrick. The second big crash was intiated by contact between Geoff Bodine and Rick Wilson. Other cars, including Kulwicki's, Hillin's and Brett Bodine's were caught in the melee as it happened in the front of the pack. 9. Replays of the wreck clearly absolved Speed of any blame. 16. Destroyahirismix666 posted: 09.26.2010 - 2:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ouch. Bonnet shattered his leg. But, in the event, a more exciting wreck happened. Geoffrey Bodine experienced a blow-over. NOT KIDDING! The car got airborne int he tri-oval , landed on the driver side, reverse-rolled onto his roof, slid on it into turn 1, then hitting the apron, the car righted itself. I would like to see this whole race. 17. Mark O. posted: 01.20.2011 - 7:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The crash you're referring to was in a Busch race. I also believe it was in '86. 0/2. 18. And in this race The Oakwood Homes 500 only 19 of the 42 cars were running at the end of the race The 600 was usually a battle of attrition but this race had two big wrecks that eliminated some good cars, Bill Elliott who dominated the 600 (leading 186 laps before his engine let go)picked up the victory leading to a strong finish to his 1987 season which help start his run to a championship in 1988. 28. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 02.06.2017 - 8:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: #3,19,50,52,88,90 accident turn 2 Caution 2: #75 accident turn 4 29. MarkM posted: 02.18.2017 - 7:06 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) I was at that race & had high hopes for Jimmy means & was also cheering one my favorite driver at the time, Alan Kulwicki, as well as Ernie Irvan, whom I knew from Saturday nights when he raced at Concord Motor Speedway in Concord NC, just down the road from Charlotte. The two wrecks mentioned in Turn Two happened almost right in front of me, as we always parked in the infield, right up against the fence at the start of the backstretch. Jimmy Means caused the unfortunate accident that took him & several other drivers out. He was pushing too hard, too early & he lost it in front of the pack in Turn Two, causing a huge wreck. I felt bad for him with his big break ending so soon like that. The reason the car was numbered 52 instead of 25 is 52 was Jimmy's usual number, & when Rick offered him the ride, Jimmy asked to use his number & a deal was worked out where because of that, Jimmy got the owner's points for that race. Rick didn't mind, as the 25 car hadn't ran the entire season, & wasn't in the points battle. 30. Ken Schrader caused the wreck by getting in the back of Dale Earnhardt. Then 4 cars all got caught up in it, Jimmy Means, Derrike Cope, Greg Sacks, and Buddy Baker. Jimmy Means also wasn't pushing it too hard those first laps either. The exact opposite. He started the race 5th and by the time he was caught up in the wreck he was running back around 20th. If he would've been pushing to hold his position in the top 5 he would've been in front of the wreck. Maybe he was too used to being in back marker independent cars and by habit just dropped back and let people pass. 35.
