After his near-fatal accident at Pocono that year, Bobby lost all memory he had of that race. It was his last win. After the Pocono incident, he never raced again. 2. They were one of the last single car operations, folding after the 1998 season. 4. larry spencer posted: 10.06.2005 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It was ALLISON wonderlad 5. Most knowledgable racing fans know that Cale would more than likely have more than 4 if not for some strange occurances (79'....enough said; B.Allison's bumper flying off, giving him a clear advantage in 82') 12. myself posted: 02.16.2007 - 5:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There are some I know who swear Davey let his dad win this one! 13. myself posted: 02.16.2007 - 5:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Famous last words of a fool (Chris Economacki): "This crash will undoubtedly end the career of Richard Petty." Speaking of Pontiacs, this race ushered in the smaller bodied, more aerodynamic Pontiac, as opposed to those big box things they had been driving. 14. myself posted: 02.16.2007 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cale very nearly won the 2nd Twin 125 in 88'. W/ just a handful of laps remaining, Waltrip was leading (he led every lap of is twin). Cale had started a good ways back & had worked his way up to 2nd. He finally mounted a challenge to Waltrip heading into turn 1. He got even for the lead, then lost it & spun out! I guess he got a lil' too excited! I witnessed all of this from the Fireball Roberts grandstand. 15. MegaRacer posted: 02.18.2007 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I remember CBS showing a piece on Dale Earnhardt. Would love to have more info on Belyeu/Moore/R. Hamby and the situations that transpired later that year that let to Hamby disbanding his team, as NO information seems to be available anywhere on that matter. Also the #98 car of Ed Pimm was either a Buick LeSabre or a 1987 Buick Regal (not the new '88 downsized sleeker version....I can NOT tell the difference between the 2!!!) Originally, Sunoco was not on the 1/4 panels of his car. It was added by the time of the 500 but I dont know when. The circular "AC" logo was originally not on Shepherd's #97 hood too. Again, I dont know when it was added. Ralph Jones original car was a red car with a black middle/roof section and a different numeral font. That car was charred in the 125's. Bill Elliott "gave" him (or let him use) one or both of those cars so I've read 24. JCS posted: 08.28.2008 - 8:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another classic. Bobby Allison won convincingly, at age 50. What an awesome win to be your last in NASCAR competition. I heard that Richard Petty's wife Lynda was furious at him after his incredibly violent wreck and asked him "Are we having fun yet?" which was Richard's code for retirement because he said he would retire when it was no longer fun. But Richard went on and scored the last top-five of his career the following week! 25. He was involved in a wreck with Ernie Irvan (who ironicly destroyed 2 cars in practice and another in the 125 race) during practice and aparently had to withdraw his entry. Not sure if he ever made an official qualifying lap or not. All four of his Cup starts in 1987 came in a #04 Chevrolet so its safe to assume that this is the number he used at Daytona in 1988. He was also the first driver for Sunoco fuel during 1987, but I don't know if they sponsored his effort at Daytona in 1988 considering they were already the primary sponsor of the #98 Ed Pimm/Curb Motorsports team. In the four seasons prior to 1988, he scored two wins, 19 top-fives, 51 top-tens, led 571 laps, and never finished outside of the top 15 in points, nor had an average finish lower than 17.9. (And one could argue that the qualifying races run for larger events in earlier years was a forerunner of THE provisional system, just not a weekly thing.) Now, just how the rules worked in the 70's and 80's is anyone's guess. I think the top two drivers in owner points who didn't otherwise make it in could qualify for a provisional, but how often they could be used, or under what circumstances they would or would not be used, I have no clue. 71. I figured the PCP started in 1990 after Petty missed 4 races in 1989 because I heard it was created for him but I wasn't 100% positive so thanks for that as well (Sebastien). The top 2 drivers thing makes sense because I noticed that before 1989 very good drivers might not make the race but the very, very, very top drivers always made all the events. I know there were a lot of part timers but I'm referring to DNQs. I'm not positive on this either but I believe that certain tracks or specific races that don't have DNQ information. I've noticed that there are drivers in a lot of years that will miss a race or two and those races won't have any DNQ information, and that other drivers who only missed a race or 2 also weren't in that/those race(s.) Anyways, thanks for the help. I love reading the comments on some of these old races. 72. From 1998 to 2003, that increased to 6 spots based on points. In 2004 it was cut back to 4 again. 2005 was the introduction of the "top-35" system, sort of the precursor to the 36 chartered teams idea, though it was more fluid which teams were protected. How the past champion's provisional was handled also changed a few times over those years. Daytona 500 rules were always different. A few other quirks existed for a while, like starting spots for Winston West drivers in combo races held on the West coast. 73. Mikey did get in the field for this race by replacing Jim Sauter in the #89 car, which was re-decaled with the Country Time sponsorship normally on tbe Chuck Rider owned #30 that was his regular ride. 74. I trust that we have full or all but full results from about 1990-present, but 80's DNQ's can be hit or miss. Usually, if a team seems to show up every week except for a race or two that don't have any listed DNQ's, I'll assume they attempted, unless there's a noticeable pattern to the races skipped (not running Riverside and Ontario for instance.) BTW, what game are you using for your sim? I have almost every carset from 1972-2009 on NASCAR Racing 3. 75. Jordan posted: 01.31.2018 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) In response to #67. JG24ChasElliottFan post: While his 1988 Daytona crash may have hindered The King's driving ability, I think there is more too it. 1. Age, Richard turned 51 in July 1988, age spares no one. 2. Switch to the more aerodynamic cars. The 1988 Grand Prix was much more aerodynamic & down force dependent when compared to earlier model years. I think Richard's driving style was better suited to handling cars that were more of a handful. 3. Switch to radial tires. Similar to my 2nd point, I think that Richard was so accustomed to bias ply tires that the switch to radials when he was over the age of 50 did not help his cause. 4. Funding. I don't think Petty Enterprises was pulling in the kind of money at the end of his career that they were before and certainly were not one of the big teams in Nascar. 76. His first Daytona 500 was all the way back in 1962. Dale Earnhardt's new black #3 Goodwrench Chevrolet picked up an early nickname as "the B-1 Bomber" after America's supersonic bomber would have been the most advanced bomber known at the time (the mere existance of the B-2 "Stealth Bomber" would not be revealed to public until the following November). The B-1 nickname, and a similar "Darth Vader" one for Earnhardt himself, regarding the new scheme would not stick for the Intimidator. The lengthy 21-lap, 52.5-mile caution for Richard Petty's crash was largely for completing repairs to the catchfence caused by the accident. While the fence took a hit it did it's job perfectly, no spectators were injured during the incident. 79. bbigjohnson posted: 05.28.2018 - 8:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think Darrell Waltrip had more of an influence in getting the Past Champions Provisional put in than Petty missing races did. Or maybe it was those reasons together. I think Waltrip missed the Daytona 500 one year and it was after that they put it in. As far as the Davey Allison criticism. I think we should let the dead rest in peace. 80. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 06.02.2018 - 11:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) First Daytona 500 starts for Dale Jarrett, Brett Bodine, and Phil Barkdoll. Only Daytona 500 starts for Brad Teague, Steve Moore, Ed Pimm, and Rick Jeffrey. Last Daytona 500 starts for Bobby Allison, Trevor Boys, Ralph Jones, Benny Parsons, Cale Yarborough, and Connie Saylor. 81. That's a fact. Darrell Waltrip never failed to qualify for a Daytona 500. He missed the fall Charlotte race in 1997, but only because Terry Labonte used the PC provisional that weekend. 83. I remember a few times Earnhardt could have taken a regular provisional, but chose to take a champion's provisional to let another car in the race and have 43 cars instead of 42. 84. Here the brand paired up for the first time with driver Derrike Cope and owner Jim Testa, as the latter revived his Cup team after a several year absence, to field a white #68 Ford Thunderbird. Cope's first Daytona outing for Purolator didn't go well, he went for a spin off Turn 2 following contact with Rick Jeffrey, but while his tenure with Testa's team wouldn't last the pairing of Cope and the brand would get its day in the sun at Daytona soon... 86.
