I've always wondered what happened to the 75 team after this race to make them fall off so much so quickly. 17. b4il3y posted: 12.03.2012 - 11:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) More than likely Goodyear caught up with the new Hoosier tires..Lake Speed had a great start to 1988 as well on the Indian based shoes. 18. I read where he said the pain was so bad he thought he was having a heart attack at first. I'd be willing to bet that played just as big a role in his performance decline as the tire wars. 19. I don't know, but I know Bill Elliott's almost were--until getting a flat tire on the last lap at Homestead in 2003. 24. Not thinking of anybody else immediately, but I'm going to guess those aren't the only ones. 25. I believe he & Billy Wade are the only drivers to earn consecutive wins for their first wins. Not sure about others who earned consecutive wins for their last wins. 26. The broadcast team at espn seemed very confused for a bit during this time. Scoring back in the day was horrible with mistakes and confusion all of the time. The technology during the 1980's and early 90's wasn't that bad for Nascar to mess up as often as they did on nationally televised races with cameras and scorers all over the place. It makes me wonder how many races were actually won by people who weren't supposed to win. Confusion like this coming one race after Neil Bonnett was celebrating a win in Richmond while Ricky Rudd pulled his car to victory lane too claiming Bonnett was on the tail end of the lead lap and he won. 28. possum posted: 12.07.2018 - 4:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @27 - "how many races were actually won by people who weren't susposed to win". Very very very few, if any. Scoring in the 70's, 80's, and 90's was very accurate. What is wasn't was "real time", meaning the flagman and the broadcast crew often didn't know exactly what the scoring was. Occasionally they'd have a longish yellow and send someone down to the scorer's tables to get accurate standings, but most of the time they figured (rightly) that it wouldn't make a difference. If there was any uncertainity at the end of the race, after an hour or so the scorers would produce an accurate finishing order. 29. RaceFanX posted: 12.05.2020 - 7:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This really was a career day for Ken Bouchard. He and the new Whitcomb Racing team failed to qualify at Daytona but in only the team's second start Bouchard put the white-and-red #10 T-Bird in the top half of the starting grid and then turned it into a top-10 run. Bouchard would go on to be the 1988 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year and no doubt this great performance played a role in that honor. This was the only race all year where Michael Waltrip and the Bahari team fielded the County Time Lemonade #30 as one of their old Chevrolet Monte Carlos from a year earlier. The team switched to Pontiac Grand Prix racers full-time for 1988 but Waltrip crashed the new model during the lead up for this race forcing a switch back to one of the old Chevys for this one. Despite that change and starting near the back Waltrip would rally back to finish a respectable 13th in this one. And wow, what a drive for Neil too. This was not the era when cars that started at the back won very often yet he started 30th and charged to the win. 35. rateus posted: 02.05.2021 - 3:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Driver Change - For the second race running, Buddy Arrington qualified his own car before turning it over to someone else for race day.
