Phil Parsons' only Winston Cup win, joining the ranks of Bobby Hillin, Richard Brickhouse and others as drivers to only score a win at Talladega. 4. At first he was banned for 6 months and got a hefty fine (can't remember for how much). Later, NASCAR recinded the ban but gave him a heftier fine. 6. This particular year, Phil finished 3rd at Daytona behind Bobby and Davey and then again behind Bill and Rick Wilson at the 4th race. He finished 8th in points that year. Incidently, Leo and Richard Jackson completely swapped teams the following year, allowing Harry Gant to have a great year and Phil a sub-par year. 7. Alan - totally agree with you about the team swap between the Jackson brothers. Phil got the raw end of that, but it was probably engineered by Johnny Hayes and the folks at U.S. Tobacco (Skoal) so that Harry would get the better cars. Richard Jackson had to basically start a new team for the 1989 season. As for this race, after he ran out of gas, Phil was about to get lapped by Ken Schrader, but Phil ran Kenny up to the wall coming off turn two, and Schrader spun out on the backstretch. So not only did Phil not get lapped, but he got a yellow to catch up to the field. He was bad fast that day. 9. Jon posted: 11.17.2005 - 7:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) One more note on this race. There was another wreck where Michael Waltrip ended up stopped in turn two or the start of the backstretch. He was so dazed by the hit that he got out of his car and walked across the track, before medical folks got to him, and before the track was clear. He later said he had no idea if any cars were coming. 10. Won a race & finished in the top 10 in points in 88', then it was all down hill from there. 14. Rob posted: 11.21.2007 - 3:41 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The summer 1987 Daytona and Talladega races used smaller carberators to cut the speed down. They did not work that well so restrictor plates were added for Daytona and Talladega in 1988. 15. While some people can't be bothered to duo 90 seconds of research on this very site to prevent themselves from making horrendously incorrect statements, others think they're roasting the previously mentioned idiot while neglecting to do the same research and, it turn, making themselves ALSO look stupid. 30. Yeah he was pretty much out of it walking across the track. But I have to wonder was it really a tire that went down or did his steering break because the replay in-car showed the whole steering assembly shoved over to theright. Never seen that before. 31. It's chock full of "actions detrimental to stock car racing." 32. RaceFanX posted: 12.31.2017 - 5:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Phil Parsons, Geoff Bodine, and Bobby Allison were the class of the field in this one with Parsons and Bodine up front for much of the race while Allison got to the front late after having been in traffic. The #55, #5, and #12 teams all put the spoilers on their cars in a flatter position than the other teams, gaining straight-line speed at the cost of corning, and that strategy proved to the be winning formula on this day. Parsons' lone win claim in his 110th NASCAR Winston Cup start. In victory lane he said this was his first win of any kind in six years, likely dating back to his Busch win at Bristol in early 1982. 33. I think he did alright to even get out and walk. 36. Rich posted: 09.24.2020 - 10:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett and Gary Nelson were the commentators.
