The whole top 10 were only a half-second apart. 3. But it was so hot that day that the fire extinguisher inside his car went off, covering the inside of his windshield. I remember thinking he blew the engine, but then he stayed on the track. By the time he got back up to speed, he lost the lead pack. Schrader was part of the pack that Phil had pulled up to the leaders. 4. I distinctly remember Ken Squier, the greatest nascar announcer of all time, interviewing Cale on his in-car radio w/ just a few laps remaining & Cale was in contention for the win. Squier concluded the interview by saying, "Go for it Cale! Win one for the old people!" 9. myself posted: 02.16.2007 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cale's last time leading a race occurred in this race, as well! 10. I think it was health-related, but I can't recall exactly. 13. The Great Dave posted: 07.26.2008 - 11:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Buddy Had an Anuerysim I think 14. If you watch the video when he comes out of turn four to passed a lapped Mike Waltrip... he pulls out of the high groove, and down as close to the side or Waltrips car as possible. Now days it is common knowledge this is called 'side drafting' and you can use it to your advantage. Could be Dale sr. figured this out about 20 years before anyone else. 20. This was a result of an accident he suffered at the Coca-Cola 600 where he hit his head on one of the steel bars inside the car during a crash. Buddy did not tell doctors he had hit his head and would later start experiencing dizziness. At Watkins Glen he talked to Dr. Jerry Punch who recommended him to a doctor who discovered the blood clot and performed the surgery to remove it. 22. Schrader wasn't far off, hanging 2nd behind Waltrip for much of the show and overcoming odd miscues like an early spin on pit road, but not even he could muscle around the #17 for more than half a lap before Waltrip would pull ahead and leave him in his dust. When DW was felled by a bad motor with 30 to go, Earnhardt may have taken the point, but the playing field had become level in an instant for anyone and their carburetor-restricted engine to make the perfect move and steal the win, and that's just what 33-year-old Kenny Schrader did. 27. wrongwaywillie posted: 07.18.2014 - 4:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Marlin had a heck of a run going into turn 1 on the last lap, and Old man Earnhardt came down on Marlin, slowing both up and allowing Schrader to take the lead. I was disappointed Earnhardt didn't win, but didn't mind Schrader got the trophy! 28. Wilson didn't qualify well but was passing cars left and right in the opening laps as he worked his way up through the field. Wilson, hot off his photo finish runner-up performance at Daytona in the prior restrictor plate race earlier in the month, was in contention to win this one and went on to a strong top-5 run. 30. All the drivers that did not qualify for this race are also listed as a DNQ for one race in the 1988 Winston West Series. If you click on the info of a DNQ the only info shown is 1988-17. This race was the 17th race of the Winston Cup series. https://www.racing-reference.info/show_dnq?id=mcdufj.01&yr=0&series=P 32. It's a shame CBS cut away before Schrader was interviewed! Knowing Kenny it would been worth delaying the golf coverage a an extra minute or two. 33. In a superspeedway era where single file racing was common, this race got crazy coming to the white flag. Schrader was in 4th place as he crossed for the white flag, and by the exit of turn 2 (matter of seconds) passed Earnhardt, Bodine and Marlin to win his first ever race. 34.
