Contact in the final corner sent both cars into a near spin and Wallace flying through the grass sending a cloud of dirt behind him. Both drivers somehow kept control and Rudd crossed under the flag just before Wallace . 3. Honestly, all I can remember is Geoff Bodine wrecking in the esses. I had just turned 4 at the time. Like many road races of the period, this came down to a mano a mano duel between Ricky Rudd and Rusty Wallace. 4. DW was leading with 3 laps to go when it started to go away on him. 5. He ran the 1983 and 1984 seasons for Mike Curb, and I think there were a few others. 9. This race would be the lone time that one of Buddy's cars would finish on the lead lap in 611 races. 10. Neil Bonnett crashed hard in practice with injuries, Jocko Maggiacomo aggravated previous injuries when a blown engine lit the inside of his car on fire, and Kyle Petty injured his leg after a blown tire sent his car into the Armco. 11. The #26 Buick was blowing up on a regular basis in 1988. Ricky and Rusty had some tremendous battles on the road courses in the late 1980's. 15. According to his book Baker had gotten in a crash in the 1988 Coca-Cola 600 in which his head hit a roll bar and he eventually had to get a brain aneurysm. Baker could turn left okay, but the right hand turns were bad and he eventually stopped on the track during practice and he began to see double. He knew something was wrong and put Shepherd in the car and went and saw a doctor the following Monday. He would later have brain surgery to correct the issue. 17. Probably a smart move if you didn't want to spend the resources on a road-course only car using one of the new 1988 bodies since there were only 2 road course races that year. Richard Petty, Jimmy Means, JD McDuffie drove Pontiac 2+2s. Bobby Hillin Jr. drove a Buick LeSabre. Rick Wilson, Ron Esau, and Sterling Marlin all drove Olds Delta 88s. 18. nascarman posted: 07.14.2016 - 11:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hoosier brought tires with a tread too wide and were sent home by NASCAR. With a brain anyeurism, Baker personally drove a team van for 10+ hours back from New York to Charlotte before going to the neurologist. 20. I see its his final race and a post mentions him aggravating a previous injury. Just wondering if the injury forced him to retire. During the race broadcast on ESPN when Jocko lost his engine, Ned Jarrett said something along the lines of, tough luck for Jocko today, Jocko's been trying to get a sponsor for years so he could race full time or at least most of the Winston Cup races. He recently got a sponsor from Fab Detergent so congratulations to him on that. 21. RaceFanX posted: 12.12.2018 - 9:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20 Sort of. Maggiacomo hung it up after 1988 due to guilt and some PTSD related to his involvement in the crash at Pocono earlier in the summer that ended Bobby Allison's career and left Allison with brain damage with this as his only Cup start after the crash. However this wasn't quite the end as he attempted, but failed to qualify, for two superspeedway races later in the season. 22. At the time if you had to go to the back, you were credited with starting in the back, so Neil officially credited with starting 40th even though he set a top-10 time. 25.
