The King would make the show for every race until his retirement after this one. 4. 18fan posted: 03.10.2009 - 12:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Earnhardt spun Geoff Bodine into the wall, but later spun out himself. 5. No idea why it was #1 instead of the normal #18, #46 or #51 cars that were used in the film. I don't know what the "sponsor" would be either. Bob Jenkins aparently mentioned this during the broadcast of the race. 6. The #51 and #46 Days Of Thunder cars also entered that race with Bobby Hamilton & Greg Sacks driving. Phoenix is another weird deal as Ellis was pretty high up in 1st round qualifying, barely missing the cut. But I cannot find results from 2nd round qualifying & don't know why he didn't make the show. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=zxUyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=k6oFAAAAIBAJ&dq=joe-ruttman&pg=2552%2C664861 8. There's some quick footage from the race but all of the stuff involving "Cole Trickle" was footage staged for the movie. "I don't want you spoiled Buck." 9. Tommy Ellis failed to qualify, and the camera equiment was moved to Derrike Cope's car. In-car footage from #10 made it into Days of Thunder. 10. saltsburgtrojanfan posted: 11.09.2017 - 3:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Caution 1: #30,83 accident turn 2 Caution 2: #15,94 accident turn 2 Caution 3: #94 spun frontstretch Caution 4: #15,94 accident turn 2 Caution 5: #6,10,28,84 accident turn 2 Caution 6: #5 accident turn 2 Caution 7: oil on track Caution 8: #3 accident turn 4 Caution 9: #94 spun turn 2 Caution 10: #42 accident backstretch Caution 11: #71 spun turn 4 11. She showed me a glossy picture of him in victory lane for this race in the Tide car and had Darrell sign it for her. I always wondered what race that was from, thinking back to it evidently must have been from this one as it was nighttime in the photo. 12. If memory serves he had a penalty and had to pit, then when the crew attempted to adjust the car under that stop accidentally left a wedge wrench in and he had to come back, which took him out of the running for a lead lap finish. Still not bad for this being the first short track race of his Cup career. 13. @Statscrash posted: 09.21.2018 - 12:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Did Brett Bodine and Sterling Marlin have some issue going on? Being as they were in 3 straight cautions in a 20 lap period? 14. Seb posted: 08.27.2019 - 8:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There was 1 Monte Carlo in that race, #71 Marcis. 15. I know a lot of the ford guys ran their '88 cars during the spring short track run but by August all of the top teams had been able to develop a short track car on the '89 platform. 16. They wanted to include Bristol, since night races were rare in this era and they wanted one, so they made sure a second unit crew was here to get some shots of the real event if its they were still scripting and preparing to do other aspects of the movie later. 19. You should read the earlier comments as there is always a lot of neat stuff and stories in them. But trying to steer back on topic the DNQ did help the "Days of Thunder" crew in a way because it taught them they really had to take it serious when getting cars race ready for filming purposes because they couldn't just show up and make the race. They would have their cars much more professionally set up for latter races where they would film on track, such as Phoenix in 1989 and Darlington 1990. Ellis' #1 not matching any of the planned movie cars might also be explained by just how early in filming this was, they may not have had the paint schemes finalized yet for the characters' cars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
