Richard Childress put Jimmy Hensley, who finished 13th in the Busch race on Saturday, in the 3 car and he pulled off the upset by winning the pole. It was his only career pole. This qualified him for the 1990 Busch Clash (what is now the Budweiser Shootout), and he drove a car owned by Dick Moroso. Unfortunately, the shifter broke off in his hand at the start of the race. The good news: he finished 10th. The bad news: there were only 10 cars in the race. 2. Also the first time either Dale or the Yarborough car led a substantial number of laps in a race. 4. He had a chance to win this thing, but got pinched into the wall during pit stops late in the race (got a little airborne). Ugly car but it still got him 5th. 7. myself posted: 06.04.2010 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hard to fathom a driver winning as many races as Waltrip did in '89 & not really being a serious contender for the Cup. 8. I was 5, but I remember that storm. It tore down a lot of trees and gave us hurricane damage we weren't used to in our region. And it wrecked a lot of fences on Dale's farm, so he had to stay back and repair them so his cattle and horses wouldn't get loose. They put Jimmy Hensley in the car and he won the pole the only time he sat in that car at a track that, despite winning there 6 times, Dale never won the pole at. The moral of this story: Hurricane Hugo was a bitch and Dale couldn't qualify for shit anywhere except Atlanta, the plate tracks, road courses, and anytime he had a broken collarbone (he won the pole in his first two races back after breaking both collarbones in a 1979 Pocono crash, and in 1996 he won the pole at the Glen two weeks after breaking his collarbone and sternum at Dega). I guess this shows you how far NASCAR has come. If a driver's property got damaged in a storm today, needed it repaired, and also needed to be somewhere for qualifying, I'm very confident they could hire some people to do it for them. 10. I seem to remember Rick Mast qualifying Kevin Harvick's car in a race, he wasn't credited with a last place DNS. 11. Debris 8. #30 Michael Waltrip spin, turn 1 12. 84Allmendinger84 posted: 05.22.2015 - 8:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) How did Earnhardt lead the first 17 laps if Jimmy Hensley qualified his car? Earnhardt would obviously have had go to the rear of the field due to the driver change, unless these rules weren't in place yet 13. The rule wasn't created until a few years later. 14. 23andJoe posted: 11.06.2015 - 6:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #10: That's because Hensley won the pole. Since he otherwise didn't even attempt any Cup races in 1989, the limitations of the site's coding mean he has to be put in SOMEhow in order to show "Poles = 1" for 1989 (and his Cup career). 15. RaceFanX posted: 11.23.2017 - 2:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 Normally yes, but I think officially NASCAR did credit him as a did not start like this so he could be awarded the pole he earned. 17. RaceFanX posted: 03.25.2018 - 1:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) During the weekend lead up to this race there was an exhibition race with go karts around the track that pitted Cup drivers against each other in humorous little karts with a little car body on them. Darrell Waltrip, who started his career in go karts, easily won...and years later admitted he used his old go kart know how to disable the speed limiting governor on his kart. 18. Matthew Lewis posted: 11.14.2018 - 3:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Several drivers did not make it to the track in time for first practice & first round qualifying. Here are the substitute drivers: 3-Jimmy Hensley (Dale Earnhardt) 25-Tommy Houston (Ken Schrader) 4-Brad Teague (Rick Wilson) 83-??? (Lake Speed) Teague & Houston did not make the top 20 (which was set in the 1st day of qualifying) and Wilson & Schrader both arrived in time for 2nd round qualifying. Lake Speed was also unable to make a 1st round qualifying attempt. Not sure if his team just didn't attempt 1st round (considering he was an owner/driver) or if they had a substitute driver? Davey Allison, Phil Parsons, Ricky Rudd & Rusty Wallace were also late getting to the track, resulting in them getting very little practice time in. 20. Jimnsimforever posted: 12.24.2018 - 10:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 Yes, Charlotte was 2 weeks after this and they had to work every day to get the place ready to hold the race there and they showed all the damage that was still visible. Also, North Wilkesboro was supposed to be the week after this race and before Charlotte but was moved to the week after Charlotte and I assume the hurricane was the reason. It's also rumored that the hurricane ruined the camshaft that was broken in Earnhardt's car in Charlotte, causing him to finish dead last in 42nd, therefore allowing Rusty Wallace to win the championship. 21. Impressive how they managed to hold on to 3 wide in 1989 but modern drivers couldn't do it 23 years later and gave Newman the win in 2012. 26. rateus posted: 02.06.2021 - 3:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @19 Rick Wilson didn't improve on Brad Teague's time, it's still Brad on the starting line-up.
