Anyway, moving on from the, um..., "intresting" personalities in NASCAR, this was a dominating win for Kyle Petty. Starting from the pole, and winning by 26 seconds. Incredible. Should have given Earnhardt, Martin, Waltrip, Cope, and Trickle a run for their money in the championship, yes indeed.(Can you tell I still haven't gotten over Senor/Senora Cross-gender yet?) 5. He was originally supposed to drive for him with True Cure as a sponsor, but True Cure pulled a Big Daddy's and never paid. After this race, Irvan signed with Morgan-McClure Motorsports, and the rest as they say, is history. 7. Junie Donlavey said he would put Hayes in a car in a moment if "he, she, it" (whatever you want to call it) still had the talent ... "he, she, it" had when "he, she, it" ran this race. Didn't Davey Allison faint on pole day after some playful roughhousing with his crew, and his car had to be handed over to "super-sub" Hut Stricklin? 8. Commentator 1: "J.T. Hayes/Terry O'Connell wins the Mello Yello 500! He/She/It came back from a bed pit stop at Lap 154, but J.T./Terry showed that he/she/it had the best car!" Commentator 2: "He/She/It sure did!" Commentator 1: "His/Her/Its victory vaults him/her/it from 9th to 7th in the standings, so a critical time in the championship for J.T. Hayes/Terry O'Connell turns out OK for him/her/it." That was fun! 13. Steve posted: 07.28.2006 - 12:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I/You/We meant to say BAD pit stop. 14. From 1988 through 1992, Unocal paid out $7,600/race if the pole-winner won the race. If the pole-winner didn't win, the money rolled over to the next race. Since a pole-winner hadn't won a race in 1989, and hadn't won either race in 1990, the bonus was up to $228,001 by the time Rockingham rolled around. BTW, at the 1990 Daytona 500, when Ken Schrader, who had won the pole, had to go to the back of the field, the #3 team argued that they should have been on the pole as a result. They argued this only because they were after the Unocal money. Nascar thought otherwise and Schrader remained eligible for the bonus. 20. Either way, this was his/her only high level NASCAR race despite a loose comeback attempt, complete with a appearence on the TV show Dateline, in the late 90s. O'Connell was also rumored to be wanting to switch to open wheel and eventually run Indy cars in a special NASCAR issue of the National Enquirer in the early 2000s. As much as I don't want to get off topic, there is so much wrong with this post. First of all, its not a Mosque, its a community center. And we were not attacked by Muslims, we were attacked by radical sociopaths. No one is suggesting building a place of gathering for them. I won't bring up the acts of terror perpetrated on American soil in the name of Christianity, only because this is a racing thread. Why you decide to bring that up is completely erroneous. And as for your moral compass, discriminating someone for a personal choice is moral? By the way, transgenders =/= terrorists. Anyway, Petty pulls off a dominating win in this one. And, as mentioned, after nearly a full season of the Unocal prize accumulating, KP picks up the largest prize of its kind, and earns nearly 10x as much money as his next competitor in this race alone. Also as mentioned, Petty did win by 26 seconds. If I recall correctly, with the caution coming out within 10 to go, and NASCAR's restart rules at the time, those at the tail end of the lead lap started in front of Petty, meaning there would be no time to make up any more ground. 48. startandparkfan posted: 03.11.2014 - 6:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Found this page somehow, and though I would clear things up. Osterlund of course is best known as the man for whom Dale Earnhardt made his first major foray into NASCAR, winning the 1980 championship and six races before selling his team to JD Stacy. He returned briefly with one of my favorite cars, the No. 57 Heinz-sponsored machine (would love to see them get back into the sport and run a No. 57 car, like they did with the Ore-Ida Busch car that Brian Vickers ran in '05 and '06). His second stint was nowhere near as successful as his first (which also included David Pearson's 1979 Southern 500 win), recording a single top-five with Hut Stricklin (fourth at Michigan in August '89, which was also Hut's first of eight top-fives) and six top-tens total between Stricklin (4) and Spencer (2, this race and the previous week at Richmond). 58. I would take that comment with a grain of salt. This is a driver with no previous experience anywhere near the Cup level. The Donlavey team was rarely competitive with their main #90 entry by this time, let alone prepared to field a second entry. The sponsor, the City of Corinth Mississippi would not have had the kind of bankroll needed even by 1990 standards to fund a decent Cup car. They qualified 38th of 38 entries. Until I see something to prove otherwise, I'm going to assume "too slow" is the reason the car was flagged. It was dominate and it was under even more pressure than normal with all the unical money that none of the pole winners were able to collect until him. His first win at Richmond in 86 everybody said was given to him when Dale wrecked DW and himself in turn 3 on the last lap. Nobody talks about the fact that Kyle wasn't the one in position to benefit from that, it was Joe Ruttman, who poked around the accident like he didn't know what to do and never did end up getting a Cup win in his career. Kyle was running 4th and blew down low around the wreck and took it. Then came his 2nd win in the 600 at Charlotte in 87 that everybody kind of chalked up to the massive amount of attrition in that race from every favorite and Kyle just was lucky he was the only one whose motor and car in general held up for the entire race. 63.
