In those final laps, either one could have done a cheap shot, but they gave each other enough room while slipping & sliding and letting the best man win. 2. je24go posted: 05.11.2005 - 6:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This is why Bristol should be asphault. The last 10 or 15 laps were run side by side, with Davey edging Mark by an estimated 8 inches, or 0.007 seconds. 3. Allison had been a top 10 car all day , but never really challenged for the lead. However on the final caution, he got the lead by choosing not to pit, since he was pitted on the backstrech, a major disadvantage. When the green came out, he had several faster cars stack up behind him, but held them all off for the final 100+ laps, due in part to the track conditions and in part some excellent defensive driving by Allison. 17. Irvan's #4 Kodak Chevrolet tapped the inside wall with the left front corner, and as a result had to pit the car so the fender could be pulled away from the tire. There was no caution because Irvan kept the car running. Irvan was three laps down, but raced his way back onto the lead lap with the help of several cautions (only to crash with Dale Jarrett on lap 354). Earnhardt spun about five laps later, but he was not so lucky. His Chevrolet backed into the wall at the same place and came to rest, causing the yellow flag to come out. Earnhardt later spent significant time behind the wall, effectively ending his day. - Just before Alan Kulwicki spun on lap 128, the Pontiac of Jimmy Spencer was smoking heavily, as if an oil line had severed (this was mentioned by the commentators on TV). He didn't pit for several laps, so it is quite possible that that is what caused Kulwicki to spin. - Dale Jarrett was very fortunate not to be hit when he looped the car around on the frontstretch, sending up a huge plume of smoke. Many drivers were blinded by it and yet managed to miss Jarrett's Ford. - Bobby Hillin, Jr. had a fantastic run going, running solidly in the top five before poor pit strategy mired him back in the pack around lap 163 or so, and he eventually wrecked with Mike Alexander on lap 275. - Davey Allison very nearly met with disaster on lap 171 when the Oldsmobile of Rob Moroso crashed into the wall and came down the racetrack into Allison's path. Allison narrowly missed him (or perhaps contacted him slightly). - For the second consecutive day, Michael Waltrip hit the wall, though this particular incident was a lot kinder to his car--he blew his right front tire while running ninth. - After his accident, Geoff Bodine complained about the state of the race track, saying "no driver in the world should have to race in these conditions". Indeed, this was a very chaotic race, in no small part due to Bristol's nature and the 150 gallons of sealant that were applied to the track surface prior to the race weekend. - Kyle Petty raced the last 40-60 laps with a hole in his windshield. He had no idea what happened, and neither did the commentators. - After a mediocre start to the season, Darrell Waltrip was hoping to salvage it with a top run at Bristol, and he followed through for 450 laps. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as a deflated tire while running second cost him a shot at victory. - And finally, the thrilling final lap. After making several attempts to pass Mark Martin for second, Sterling Marlin was spun out of second by fourth-place Ricky Rudd coming through Turn 2. As has been mentioned, Marlin was none too happy about it and angrily searched for Rudd after the race, even going into the #5 team hauler to "have a discussion". But that was only the prelude to the well-documented photo finish. Mark Martin took the inside lane in hopes of edging out Davey Allison out at the line, but it was for naught. Allison won by about six inches in a photo finish. Overall, a very fun race to watch. 18.
