He just flat wipped them on this day, winning the race after running out of fuel about mid race and nearly falling a lap down. 7. I believe it was a reward for Brett winning at North Wilkesboro previously that season (it included a commercial showing Brett taking the checkers). During the footage shown, Alan Kulwicki and Michael Waltrip actually crashed together coming out of Turn 2. 11. myself posted: 02.13.2007 - 5:42 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Lets give it up for ole' Dick Trickle, driving the great Cale Yarborough's pontiac, sitting on the pole! 12. spencer posted: 02.24.2007 - 3:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Earnhardt was the first driver in recent memory to have 1 engine have 2 failures in the same race. 13. Cope - Called a fluke winner and hasn't ever really had a good ride. Schrader - Long, good career, but could not crack five wins. Trickle - Never really made a serious run at cup competition until too late in his career. Martin - Successful and great, but has never won a cup, which he's deserved. Marlin - Great driver who never really got great rides or stayed with poor rides for too long and was eventually forced out of the sport. 23. 1995z71 posted: 01.20.2012 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) "Proof Cope's Daytona win wasn't just luck " Cope's Daytona win was luck. I met Cope several times, including in the '90 season and he was one of the nicest drivers who really treated his fans well. Before Jeff Gordon came along, Cope was one of the most well-spoken and polished drivers for sponsors. 25. Morgan was as fast as any driver of his era, but for some reason could never land a top notch ride. Bud Moore and the Woods gave him his best opportunities to win, but by the time he got with the Woods it was long past their glory days, and Bud Moore spent his entire racing career punching above his weight; getting great results for a team of its means, but never fielding a dominant car. There was always rumors that Morgan was difficult to get along with, and perhaps thats what prevented him from landing rides with a team that could contend consistently contend for wins and championships. But all the stars of the era, Earnhardt, Waltrip, all of them, spent many a night at a saturday night short track watching Morgan Shepherd disappear out the windshield. 28. Frogger49 posted: 03.09.2014 - 5:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To Mark Tobey: It was in fact a camshaft that failed in Dale Earnhardt's engine early on. Camshaft issues knocked Harry Gant out from the lead as well. Must have been a bad batch of them around that time. 29. kidracer posted: 07.11.2014 - 10:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (4) I cant take this race seriously. - Derrike Cope wins? Winning a 500 miler at Dover in humid 90° temperatures is proof he had what it took to be a winner. There were several relief drivers used throughout the race. Earnhardt, Gant, and Hut Stricklin all broke camshafts. Benny Parsons attributed the camshaft failures to the rear wheels leaving the racetrack as they dove into the corners, though not sure if that was the case. It was certainly rare to see three camshafts break in one race, though. 32. Stretch posted: 01.20.2015 - 12:53 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) Watched this race on youtube. Rusty went from the lead to 10th in the last 70 laps. Kyle Petty lost his track position after having to pit twice due to a problem on the final pit stop. Petty ran in the top 5 all day long but once he lost his track position couldn't get to the front. Wallace's crew chief, Barry Dodson injured his thumb during a stop. He got it caught between the jack. He went to the infield care center and came back out to be the jack man for the rest of the race. Just showed you how tough those guys and still are on pit road. 38. M posted: 04.30.2017 - 5:53 pm Rate this comment: (6) (1) Why is Derrike Cope less deserving of winning the Daytona 500 than Dale Earnhardt? That race he put himself in position to win and was rewarded for it at the end. Isn't that the name of the game? It's pretty funny to me that Dale Earnhardt had so few wins at the Cup level at Daytona that all the media, fanboys, and everybody else had to start counting exhibition, Busch Grand National, IROC, and hooligan races onto his total in order to inflate his "dominance" at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt could never finish the job at Daytona when the races COUNTED; He won all of those qualifying races which were just that...qualifying races. In the big race, he choked. Derrike Cope won the Daytona 500 before Earnhardt did. Darrell Waltrip won the Daytona 500 before Earnhardt did. Bill Elliott won the Daytona 500 before Earnhardt did. Jeff Gordon won the Daytona 500 before Dale Earnhardt and has 3 to Earnhardt's 1 Richard Petty won SEVEN Daytona 500s. Hell, Michael Frickin' Waltrip won 2 Daytona 500s. Leading the most laps and running up front means nothing if you can't win the race. Just because Derrike Cope wasn't from the south and wasn't a good ol' boy and drove for underfunded teams the majority of his career doesn't make his accomplishment and less worthy than Ironhead, who spent the majority of his career crashing people. 39. On another note good finishes for Butch Miller (14th place) and Jimmy Horton (20th place). 41. There is NO denying that Cope flat out dominated this race and earned it. 42. Wouldn't have it any other way. That's called respect and no matter how you feel, Earnhardt had it. But, go off for Derrike Cope! Greatest driver of all time! Dick Trickle, Rusty Wallace, Derrike Cope, Kyle Petty, Bill Elliott, and Mark Martin all repeatedly traded the lead throughout the race, with a lead change between someone in that group of 6 occurring once every 30-40 laps as short run/long run cars prevailed where Petty, Wallace and Elliott were good on short runs while Cope, Martin, and Trickle were good on longer runs. In the final run, Rusty Wallace put on a bad set of tires and that allowed the entire field to pass him and he fell back to 10th place, meanwhile Cope led the final 55 laps and was being caught by late race contender Ken Schrader, but he couldn't catch him. Definitely one of the greatest runs of Dick Trickle's NASCAR career. 45. Anthony2 posted: 06.19.2020 - 7:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Career best race for Richard Trickle. 46. Ryan posted: 07.03.2020 - 8:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @38 He had bad freak luck. Flat tire, hitting a seagull while leading, ran out of gas, bad pit stops late in the race and got beat by better cars the times he finished 2nd. Daytona is considered the World Center of Speed... Daytona "International" Speedway. They don't just run Cup there. He was good in anything he ran there. He came close to winning the 24 Hours of Daytona there even. He was just good there, but had bad luck in the D500 and unfortunately lost his life there. He was competitive there until the end. And IROC is as good as a measuring stick than any considering the cars are equal. When in equal cars he won at Daytona six times in 13 starts against the best in the world. That's almost 50%. Give me a break as @42 said. I do agree with you that Cope put himself in position to win if anything happened (which it did) and won the race. He was deserving, but very lucky. Another troll that lives off his ole man's thinking and believes that Dale won 900% of his 76 wins by crashing someone. SMH> 47. But this was the best day for the team up to this point as Dick Trickle started on the pole, led 63 laps and finished a strong third. This third place finish would be the best that the team would have until 1997 when John Andretti won The Pepsi 400 at Daytona in July. 48.
