Steve posted: 05.07.2006 - 12:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's pretty sad. I wonder how many times he attempted a Winston Cup race. Rich Voglar only started one major NA$CAR race, a Busch Grand National race at Rockingham in 1988 (won by Mark Martin). Rich finished 17th. 3. A talent taken from us way too soon as he would've had a very successful stock car career. 4. Matt posted: 10.21.2006 - 5:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, Rich was scheduled to start 32nd. 5. Brian Ross makes his debut for Ken Schrader. 6. dwilk32 posted: 09.23.2007 - 6:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) does anyone know why darrell ran this race but not daytona or the next few races? 7. After the pain and hassle this caused he decided not to skip the next few races to heal. 8. He didn't run Daytona because he was in a hospital bed with his leg in a cast. 10. It was the next-to-last top 10 of his career. 11. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.21.2008 - 1:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Very good race. Geoff Bodine stretched his fuel mileage to get the win. Harry Gant also made the same gamble and was running 2nd on the final lap when he ran out. 12. Kevin posted: 07.29.2008 - 9:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Jeff Gordon finished 2nd to Rick Vogler at Salem that night. If I remember correctly, Larry Neber from ESPN was interviewing Gordon a week after Vogler was killed and basiclly asked, 'what was it like to finish 2nd to a person who died?' Gordon was very cool and said, 'Vogler was the class of the field and had the field covered!' You could tell that Gordon was bothered by the question. Never heard from Larry Neber again! Does anyone remember who the driver was who caused Vogler's crash? I think it was Terry Wayne or something like that. 14. Richie posted: 05.05.2009 - 10:03 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Rich Vogler ran over the right rear of Wayne Hammond and hit the top of the roll cage on a fence post; his car landed back on its wheels. His helmet continued to roll from turn four down to near the start finish line. Killed instantly; horrible accident. Race was shown live on ESPN's Saturday Night Thunder series. 16. john posted: 01.30.2010 - 11:55 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Rich vogler was a very talented driver and super nice guy. I was in the pits that night at Salem and met rich for the first time. He was very nice to take time for a photo and autograph. The crash was very bad to witness and his death was shocking. 17. gearhead15 posted: 06.11.2011 - 8:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought it was Tampa sprint and supermodified veteran Frank Riddle who Vogler tangled with at Salem? 18. Richie posted: 07.23.2011 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) No, it was definitely Wayne Hammond. The accident affected him greatly. Like Riddle, Hammond was from the Florida sprint car scene. At the time, Hammond drove the Jack Nowling #66 and Frank Riddle drove his own #88. 19. The race itself had some of the season's best battles - Greg Sacks ran down Geoff Bodine for the halfway bonus; Davey Allison and Geoff Bodine swapped the lead four times on Lap 117; they and Rusty Wallace all led on Lap 180. 20. How in the world did this race restart with 1 to go? Ken Ragan absolutely crushed the turn 1 wall (first year of concrete walls in turns, still boiler plates along straights) on lap 196. Bodine comes by and gets the yellow on lap 197. There's no video of the Ragan wreck happening or the clean-up. All you see is his car come to rest at the top of the banking and then the cars circling under cation for basically a lap and a half until the green comes out with 1 to go. Did they just push his car into the grass to get the race restarted? 23. ScottB posted: 03.15.2019 - 12:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Haven't watched the footage, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's what they did. It's a track where you could move a car out of harm's way without towing it all the way back to the garage to get that one final lap of green flag racing in. 24. rateus posted: 04.22.2020 - 6:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Darrell Waltrip and Dave Marcis were both supposed to start from the back, presumably because their back-ups also qualified their cars. Marcis did fall back but Waltrip took the start from his qualifying position. As a result NASCAR held the #17 in the pits for an extra lap before allowing Jimmy Horton to join the race. https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:vWCe1U6FqYEJ:https://www.mcall.com/mc-xpm-1990-07-23-2760980-story.html+&cd=25&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk Having just watched the tape of the driver change, I'm not at all surprised that Darrell chose to sit out the next few races - 'hassle' barely begins to describe the chaos, and that's before you factor in the broken leg. 25. He later admitted it was a misunderstanding of the rules in question. 26. BOBO83329521 posted: 06.19.2020 - 5:26 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Geoff Bodine got caught behind the lapped car of Ken Ragan on lap 180, causing Rusty Wallace to catch and pass him for the lead. Rusty blocked Geoff to the bottom of the track in Turn 1, leading to the two battling side-by-side through Turn 1 and halfway down the back straight until Davey Allison took them 3-wide and took the lead, then he got loose in the tunnel turn and lost the lead to Geoff Bodine, this being the winning pass of the race. Bill Elliott pitted late under the penultimate caution and had enough gas to make it to the finish, taking a car that was largely irrelevant all race and finishing second. 27.
