After the race, Marlin's car owner(Billy Hagan) chased Kendall around his car, hitting him with his cane. 2. mcmurrayfan posted: 06.14.2006 - 3:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sarel van der Merwe from South Africa drove for Rick Hendrick in this race and finished 24th. 3. I think their ancestory is in Great Britain, though. Good old 'Otter Pops' sponsored current car owner Rick Ware in his only Winston Cup race. (He owns the #52 Dodge that runs a limited schedule in Cup.) 4. As the car ran along the wall, he jumped out at approximately 25 mph! Perhaps even more amazing, when the medical crew got to him, his pulse was already down to normal! Austria's Rindt is best known as the only driver to become a champion in a major racing series (Formula One in 1970) after his death. 6. myself posted: 02.13.2007 - 6:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The final win for Levi Garrett. Matthew Sullivan posted: 02.23.2012 - 12:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The final caution was a HUGE break for Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt's left rear tire cut down on the long back stretch sending him into a spin and tearing up the fender. Earnhardt was able to recover and finish seventh. Had the caution not happened, Earnhardt certainly would have lost a lap but more importantly lost points. 16. He had the line, but Sarel apparently didn't see him and Hut was almost out of brakes. 20. Beebe was airlifted to an area hospital with a concussion among other injuries and thus withdrew from the race after qualifying. Trickle and Martin did race however with some bumps and bruises, Trickle finishing 30th and Martin coming home in 5th. http://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/08/09/Three-drivers-injured-in-Watkins-Glen-race/2074650174400/ 22. It was Rudd's only win with Levi Garrett colors on the #5 Chevrolet and as mentioned earlier the last for the chewing tobacco brand in NASCAR. Hendrick winning only one race all year had to be a surprise, in 1990 that team wasn't the all-conquering powerhouse it would be from 1995 onward but still had three of the better teams and drivers in the sport. Ken Schrader and Darrell Waltrip being shut out would not be expected, although perhaps justified a bit more by Waltrip being sidelined for several races including this one by his wreck at Daytona in July. Sarel van der Merwe's lone Cup start in this one came subbing for the healing Waltrip in the #17 Tide Chevy. 23. Josh posted: 07.03.2017 - 5:31 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Greg Sacks destroyed his car in Turn 5 to bring out the first caution. From the tv angle it looked like something broke on the car, and he went flying off camera into the tire barrier. There was significant left front and left side damage to the car. Sacks escaped without injury and saluted the fans on that end of the track. Sacks relieved Jerry O'Neil in the #2 at some point during the race. Irv Hoerr's sponsor was Skoal Classic, same as Terry Labonte's. Hut Stricklin was running in the top 5 with a few laps to go, but lost it in Turn 7 and tangled with Sarel van der Merwe, bringing out the caution. Both drivers sustained damage to their cars too severe to continue. They restarted with three laps to go. Rudd got a great restart and smoked the rest of the field. It was a chaotic final lap. Irv Hoerr spun in Turn 1, and Bill Elliott was the odd man out of a chain reaction heading into Turn 2; he ended up nosing into the guardrail before the "esses". Alan Kulwicki literally pushed his car to the finish after a gear problem, but bailed when it caught fire. 24. djar87 posted: 08.08.2017 - 1:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why did Geoff Bodine's engine sound so different? Almost V6 like. At first I figured the in car camera audio was messed up but when they show him Labonte and Rudd going throw the turn 2 and 3 and down the back straight you can still hear that weird engine sound. 25. Scott B posted: 08.08.2017 - 6:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If I was to take a guess, the team may have done something odd with the headers and exhaust routing on the road course car. Junior Johnson was never afraid of experimentation. 26. djar87 posted: 08.09.2017 - 9:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) That would have to be it because the 11 wasn't hurting for power at all. Maybe kind of like the exhaust on #4 Kodak car at the super speedways in the mid 90s had a different sound. 27. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.03.2019 - 3:57 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @21 Dick Trickle must've had pretty bad bumps and bruises. He started the race but made a pit stop a few laps in as was planned and was so hurt he had to be carried like a bride across the threshold by a pit crew member around the car and over the pit wall. Dorsey Schroeder, who competed in IROC in 1990, replaced Trickle for the rest of the race. 28. They tried to go to Jerry Punch for a report, but he had removed his headset to attend to the guy until medical crew could get there. 29. Dave's clearly on the mend though - after lasting 1 lap at Pocono and 15 at Michigan he managed over 20 here on a road course. Speaking of injuries, Dick Trickle's regular shoe size is 8 1/2 - his right foot was so swollen after his practice accident that he needed a size 11 for race day! 32. thecautionlightnews posted: 09.23.2020 - 12:23 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Sarel van der Merwe becomes the first African, and the first South African to race in NASCAR. I don't know if he was banned before 1990 due to Apartheid and the whole boycott. 33. RaceFanX posted: 09.23.2020 - 12:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @32 NASCAR didn't have any official policy prohibiting South African drivers during Apartheid, Sarel van der Merwe even previously attempted the 1988 Daytona 500 before this, but given how few foreign drivers had an interest in NASCAR at the time (with Sarel likely the only South African) that is understandable. Van der Merwe raced in IMSA for Rick Hendrick's Chevrolet Corvette GTP program and both of his NASCAR Cup appearances came in Hendrick Chevys as a result of that connection. Technically Apartheid was still in place at the time of this race but its end was already on the horizon with Nelson Mandela already released from prison earlier in the year. 34.
