My hometown is also about 40 miles from Abington, VA, where the Morgan-McClure shop is. It was great to see them win a race finally, and to win it at what is essentially their home track. Good job Ernie. 5. Burton31 posted: 06.14.2006 - 10:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) My hometown is about 20 miles from the Morgan-McClure shop. 6. Ernie Irvin about killed many people during his driving career, including himself. 12. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.21.2008 - 1:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Earnhardt had the dominant car but lost a lap after cutting down a tire after making contact with the lapped car of Ricky Rudd on a late restart. 13. He would have been a Winston Cup champion with Robert Yates if the 1994 wreck at Michigan not happened. 14. Clayton posted: 12.24.2008 - 9:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) hey myself! Anyways, nowadays we have Kyle Busch. Not gonna slam Irvan, I was a fan of him when I was little. 19. Richard Petty tried to use JD McDuffie and Rick Wilson in relief, but the car's height setup wasn't equal enough. He did drive a few laps in his son's #42 car. 20. Frogger49 posted: 12.02.2011 - 12:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rob Moroso got in Davey Allison's #28 shortly after he crashed his own #20. That was basically just from circumstance. Trickle got really loose exiting Turn 4 and swerved into Moroso's right rear while trying to save it, putting the Crown Oldsmobile in the wall. 21. NadeauFan91 posted: 01.12.2016 - 4:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Irvan earned the hell out of that victory, Rusty and Irvan were practically nose to tail for those last fifty laps. 24. sk posted: 03.26.2016 - 8:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Relief drivers: #28 Rob Moroso (for Davey Allison - heat exhaustion) #26 Chad Little (for Brett Bodine - heat exhaustion) #42 Richard Petty (for Kyle Petty - suffered from burns on his foot before crashing on lap 326) There was a lot of competition for relief in this event; I believe it was Dick Trickle who had Chuck Bown on-call to hop in the #66 due to injury; he ultimately never got out of the car but Bown had to say no to several teams seeking help for their beleaguered drivers. One driver who felt unwell in the car and requested assistance was Richard Petty, who went to the garage and ended up helping son Kyle make laps in his damaged #42 for a brief time. It was broadcast that The King's team wanted Rob Moroso to get in the 43, which was strange as Rob was still on track having a decent run for himself, but coincidentally moments later Moroso got tipped by Dick Trickle and crashed out of the race. 25. Rusty Wallace is one of the best at Bristol and couldn't get around him. I really think that if Dale Earnhardt hadn't cut a tire, he would still have had trouble with Irvan. 26. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.03.2019 - 5:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 That's a flat out lie to suggest Earnhardt somehow "in plain view ran over pit crew members" as if something malicious was purposefully done by him. Worded as if Earnhardt just came flying through the pits running over crew members everywhere. Watkins Glen 1989 1)No pit crew members were run over. 2)No part of Earnhardt's car even made contact with a pit crew member. 3)A tire carrier in the pit behind him came running around the corner of the car carrying a tire under each arm, at the same time Earnhardt was trying to squeeze between 2 cars into his own pit and the front right fender hit the tire the guy had under his right arm and bounced him flying through the air. I can guarantee there was nothing done on purpose. The guy wasn't seriously hurt. 4)Watkins Glen was pure chaos in back then in the pits, especially during cautions with no room whatsoever. Many incidents more serious than that one took place, unfortunately with more serious injury. The incident with Waltrip was on the last lap and they were running 1st and 2nd and Earnhardt wrecked himself too. Waltrip paid him back a year or 2 later when he was so desperate to get his first win with Hendrick that on the last lap, running in 3rd, Waltrip ran through Earnhardt in 2nd, and Labonte in 1st and took them both out to get the win. At least Waltrip won with his intentional wreck. 27. Chase9Fan posted: 08.19.2019 - 12:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle and Richard Petty both quit due to fatigue. Interesting. 28. BadBooking posted: 04.10.2020 - 10:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @27, Richard DNF'ed due to fatigue increasingly more often due to age, he was 53 at the time of this race. Kyle Petty had his foot burned due to heat in the floorboard, and then the crash he endured did not help his cause much. Kyle's car was probably repaired for another go and then the team realized it truly wasn't worth it. 29. Trident posted: 04.11.2020 - 8:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) 22: Darrell Waltrip was much smarter than Dale Earnhardt. He didn't run through anybody, he waited for both of the leaders to take themselves out, and then drove on for the win. Earnhardt on the other hand, threw a temper tantrum because Waltrip had the audacity to race him for the win in 1986 and decided to destroy both of their cars because Waltrip had the faster car and he couldn't get back around him, and in the process nearly killed him. Just like he needlessly wrecked Rusty Wallace at Talladega for 6th place. Just like when he threw another tantrum and crashed Terry Labonte twice at Bristol, only during the second time he managed to spin him around coming off of the turn instead of on the straightaway, and came away with the win, after which he was booed by the entire crowd right out of the racetrack. And the last race of 1992, when after having a terrible season he decided to stop caring and wrecked both Rick Mast and Brett Bodine, who had a chance to have good runs after qualifying on the front row. And the 1986 Southern 500, when he tangled with Richard Petty in the middle of the pack, ruining Richard's day, causing him to say, "I knew better than to be back there messing around with Earnhardt and getting in his way." Ernie Irvan had some problems with overaggressiveness, although I and anybody with any common sense in their brains know that any of his incidents involving other drivers were accidental and not done with any malice. I seem to recall Ernie Irvan apologizing, and promising to do all he could to earn back the drivers respect in the garage area. I can't recall Dale Earnhardt doing anything like that, except shrugging his shoulders, asking "Who me?", and then saying tough shit, deal with it afterwards. Dale Earnhardt more than earned his nickname "Ironhead." He was just good enough to market it as "Intimidation," and sell merchandise to dumb morons who believe everything Dale Earnhardt does is God-like and everything that everybody else does is inferior or to the detriment of their golden boy. 30.
