It went something like this: "See the ole girl slap me when I got fresh with her?" referring to scrapping the wall of "The Lady In Black." Even Earnhardt respected Darlington. 5. It was so freakin hot I wanted to leave at least 3 times, but I stuck it out and saw him win. 13. spencer posted: 04.18.2014 - 7:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ken Schrader quote after wreck with Shepherd, "Morgan put me in the wall". He was pissed. He went back out and intentionally wrecked Shepherd causing fisticuffs between their wives. Man, Morgan had a hot wife for a dude with a fro. Also, I think this was the last race with part of the overhang still on the frontstretch. 14. He also ended up leading the most laps in the race by one lap over Bill Elliott to get the 5 extra points. Unfortunately this would be his last Southern 500 win to make a total of 3. Like the Daytona 500 he probably should have won more of these. 15. AD posted: 06.02.2016 - 11:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) 41st annual Southern 500. According to an article Gadsden Times, the two had an incident in the '89 Firecracker 400 and it flared up here at Darlington. 19. Ernie needed oxygen at the end of the race and you could tell Dale was gassed in victory lane. Races like this prove what athletes these drivers truly are 20. In the Busch race the day before this Jerry Punch was doing the lap by lap for the ESPN broadcast. He was talking about Irvan and said, "the guys in the garage have given him the nickname Swervin Irvan". I was under the impression from reading comments on this site that he wasn't given that nickname until all kinds of controversial incidents had happened. Read many comments basically saying "he wasn't given the name swervin Irvan for nothing". I have really only seen one really dumb thing he did up to this point in his career...the spring Darlington race. Not taking up for him, i'll have to see the other incidents he caused for myself. Just surprised the first time I hear a word about that nickname, it just happens to be the first race after he records his first Winston Cup victory. I think it was given to him in a joking way after that win. Punch gave the impression that it was literally just given to him this Southern 500 weekend. Anybody know exactly when he was given that name? 22. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.08.2019 - 7:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I just now found out myself exactly who gave him the name Swervin Ervan, where and why, but just not when for sure. During the 1991 spring race at Atlanta that got rained out and finished on Monday, they interviewed Ernie during the delay and asked him about it. He said Jimmy Means gave him the nickname after a practice session at North Wilkesboro. He said Jimmy Means was driving beside him, knocking into him and left tire marks all up the side of his (Irvan's) car and then came into the garage and called him Swervin Irvan. Basically saying Jimmy Means was the one who was swerving into him. So there you have it from Ernie himself, circa spring of 91. Jimmy Means gave it to him....practice session at NW during spring race 90 or in the couple years before, and because they were banging together on the track and the rest of the guys in the garage picked up on it. At least according to Irvan. 23. Swervin Irvan was well known for being involved in or starting wrecks, but he had a GREAT avoidance with cars crashing all around him in this race. 2. Dale Earnhardt believed he had a tire going down toward the end of the race, however he chose to stay out as he thought that the prize money he could gain for winning the race was worth more than making a pit stop to fix his vibration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
