Gant claimed he had radio problems but NASCAR still moved Hut's finishing position back to the end of the cars that finished one lap down anyway. 5. Dale Earnhardt's victory in this race made him the first driver to win at Richmond on both its old layout and its new one. The track was rebuilt into its present 3/4th-mile tri-oval layout in between its spring and fall races in 1988. 8. Crews had to repair the wall as Jarrett put a good dent into it. Mark Martin was the fastest car toward the end of the race, after pitting for a splash and go to ensure he'd finish the race with enough fuel. He was tearing through the field up until the final restart. Earnhardt restarted first and Martin second, in the running order, but this was one of the most botched restarts I've seen in NASCAR, and I'm surprised this isn't talked about more. They gave the one-to-go with 5 laps to go, and cars were three-wide trying to figure out where to restart, including the lapped cars. NASCAR did not wave off the restart; instead, they waved the green with four to go, and Earnhardt not only obviously jumped the start, but the lapped and damaged #12 car being driven by Harry Gant in relief of Hut Stricklin was between the 3 and 6 in the OUTSIDE LANE. The only action that was taken because of this was the #12 was moved to the bottom car one lap down, instead of the first car one lap down. Mark was gracious about it after the race, but did mention that "We may have lost to Dale anyway, but I wish we had a shot at him". He knew NASCAR let one slide for Earnhardt. 10. Brett Bodine did too, but Chad Little hit about as hard as you can hit at a direct head on angle at Richmond. During that same caution (#7) there was a very cringe worthy incident in the pits. Mark Martin was involved in that multi car crash and made at least 10 to 12 stops, coming in for 30 seconds each lap until they got it fixed. His crew chief Robin Pemberton, had both arms in the left front tire well and it looked like part of the top of his head when there was some miscommunication and Martin took off too early. Very quick reaction by Pemberton avoided some very serious injury to him, being just able to get his arms out of there and roll over in time. @9 Part of an explanation to your question about the final restart is already posted above. It was supposed to be up to the leader to start first on the restart. Dale got a good jump. Earlier in the race Rusty Wallace got an outstanding jump, even better than Dale's. They were head to head during another restart with Dale starting in 2nd and he got another good one that combined with a below average one by Rusty let Dale get around him right away. I guess if you were a huge Martin fan you could try and say there was some conspiracy theory to help Dale. I also guess if you were a hardcore Earnhardt fan you could try and say that caution 7 lasted just enough laps (14) for the points leader, Mark Martin and crew to make enough stops to get his car fixed and stay on the lead lap. Depends on how much you are into conspiracy theories. 12. I think Johnny Hayes was the commentators name who said this and he had to have been talking about Mark Martin. "Did you see him run down to the #12 car? As soon as he got to the window and saw it was Harry Gant in there he turned around and ran the other way." I'm assuming Mark Martin was extremely upset with the 12 car for holding him up from a chance at contesting the lead. He ran over there thinking it was Hut Stricklin to confront him and ran away when he saw it was Harry Gant? That's what the commentator's comment led me to think. 13. Google is no help too. "I knew it was coming because he needed to do that," Wallace said. "He was starting to run out of time as far as getting his new deal done." 15.
