Brett Bodine ran a very strong race and looked to be in contention for a second-consecutive First Union 400 when he was spun in turn three by Ricky Rudd. Geoff Bodine was flagged for making contact with Davey Allison AFTER the two had spun in turn four. Allison had escaped without damage in the first incident, but the contact with Bodine damaged his right-front fender. Dale Earnhardt recovered from an early-race spin to finish 2nd. 6. I still remember thinking that the cars were just too big to be racing on that itty bitty track. Earnhardt's spin was due to contact from none other than Ricky Rudd. 7. Rudd also cost Dale the 1989 Championship at this track in the Fall race. But don't worry, Dale would all but lock up the title for this year at this track in the Fall with a win while Rudd (2nd in points) struggled. 13. Seriously, what does a championship count have to do with the statement "you make it out like Dale was an angel. He had that coming to him"? You quoted it, and then brought up something that has nothing to do with the statement. Oh and by the way, these are the things you point out in a debate, not typos 15. Rudd had the bottom groove going into turn #1 and Earnhardt tried to cut him off....then got pissed off when Rudd wouldn't back off and let him back in line. It was a dumbass move by Earnhardt because he had a championship at stake and 5 points for one position wouldn't have made much of a difference....whereas wrecking cost him a bunch of points. Earnhardt's ridiculous post-race interview is ironic, considering all the drivers he wrecked...intentionally...in his career. 16. nascarman posted: 05.26.2015 - 1:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Qualfying Results: Pos. Actually DEarnhardt ran the same line as he did the whole race and there was plenty of room for Rudd to go lower than what he did. It was a douche move by Rudd and this is the only time that he ever played a major factor in any championship. People act like Dale won all of his races by hitting someone out of the way. What a bunch of gutless babies that in reality won't even get in the trenches of it and do research. Instead they just go by hear say from people that didn't like him. 18. Josh posted: 10.17.2017 - 5:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dick Trickle had a great top 10 run going in the Allen's Glass Buick but tangled with the 4 car to bring out the race's final caution and hit the Turn 1 wall hard with the left side. It seemed like Davey Allison was in about 12 wrecks, but somehow came home in 6th. 20. Anonymous posted: 10.19.2017 - 12:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Trickle wasn't the only one in this race to have a good run ruined by a crash. Early on Rusty Wallace was running up front but was the victim of Morgan Shepherd and Ted Musgrave tangling in the groove beneath him. Musgrave corrected into Wallace, sending him hard into the Turn 1 wall. Later, Brett Bodine was proving his 1990 North Wilkesboro win was no fluke, leading many laps. However, on a restart, Ricky Rudd, trying to make up a lap, got under Brett and overdrove Turn 3, getting into Brett and sending him hard into the Turn 3 wall. In addition to Trickle's good run for a shoestring operation being ruined, Dale Jarrett's top 10 run was ended in the same incident. Jarrett lost control trying to miss Trickle and Irvan tangling and ended up nose first in the Turn 1 wall. 21. Steve posted: 11.25.2017 - 3:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Rudd deserved a black flag in this race. Anxious to get his lap back, he tagged and spun 2nd place Harry Gant in Turn 3, and just 12 laps later he dive-bombed leader Brett Bodine in Turn 3, sending him into the wall and out of the race. He was black-flagged under that caution for speeding in the pits, but if I was the race director I would have held him for 2 laps for failing to respect the leaders. Geoff Bo-whine's post-crash interview could be used for fertiliser. I'm in no way convinced that he "accidentally" spun in front of Davey after the crash, and I have a hard time believing he hoped that Jimmy Spencer would go on to win; maybe Jimmy hadn't pissed him off yet. 22. Sterling Marlin was recovering from severe burns he suffered in a crash during the prior race at Bristol so Junior Johnson's team drafted in Chargin' Charlie Glotzbach to take over for Marlin early in this race as his relief driver. 24. James posted: 11.07.2019 - 7:35 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Reading some of the old argument LOL Listen: Dale Earnhardt won 7 Championships because he was a GREAT driver. As in not too many people do that. After Richard Petty in the 70s, Earnhardt in the 80s and Gordon in the 90s how many GREAT (7 Championship) Drivers were there in NASCAR? Ricky Rudd was a really GOOD driver. So were a lot of the other guys. What's the point in ripping on guys? I enjoyed watching all of the drivers. Knowing when a new driver like Jimmy Spencer come out of nowhere and run a top 5? That's what made the races fun. If Dale Earnhardt or Jeff Gordon won every single race NASCAR would have been boring. 25. Comes back a year later & wins his first race as a car owner. 26. Several others were quicker: Brett Bodine: polesitter, led quite a few laps but got taken out by Ricky Rudd Harry Gant: arguably the fastest car on track, also got taken out by Ricky Rudd Jimmy Spencer: led many laps late, just couldn't get going on restarts Geoff Bodine: crashed early, came back, was catching Spencer when a caution came out for Richard Petty then had a run in with Davey Allison (one of two people who ran into issues with Davey, Kyle Petty also had an incident with him) And the combination of all these issues allowed Darrell to run away with the win over Dale Earnhardt who came back from 2 spins to finish second. 28.
