Davey Allison was leading going into the last 100 laps and looked dominant, pulling away from Petty in the winding laps. Dale Earnhardt had gotten up to about 3rd or 4th and started drifting backwards because the handling went away. Then, in a matter of three or four laps, Allison, while leading, blew a right front out of two, went another lap, came down to try and pit, and got Kulwicki with his left rear causing a caution. He would go a lap down and end up a disappointing 8th. There were only about eight or nine cars on the lead lap. Everyone came down to pit with less than 70 or so to go. Petty beats out Earnhardt just barely to restart first, while Rusty Wallace, who was running in the top six on the lead lap, blew a transmission and went behind the wall. As the restart happens, Petty gets heat from Earnhardt who eventually drives away for the win. Shelmerdine took an ill-handling car and made it damn near perfect when he needed to. And just to note, Ricky Rudd was on the lead lap battling for a top 10 late when his brakes started overheating. He ran into the back of Ruttman once in the corners because his brakes were shot. He got into to pits, managed to fix it for the remaining laps, and finished just shy of a top-ten. 3. Gant lost a lap and never made it back up, despite having a really good car. 4. Another Bobby (Hillin) spun 2 or 3 times and even damaged the nose of the car and still finished 17th. 6. The West Coast racers were rewarded for their long haul efforts with a top-20 run, albeit almost 40 laps down. 9. The rain out of 2nd round qualifying knocked out a couple drivers you wouldnt expect to DNQ like Cope and Hamilton. During the broadcast, Ned Jarrett mentioned that Jimmy Means had a really fast car that weekend too and unfortunately was also victimized by the cancellation of 2nd round qualifying 10.
