Bodine had to sit out two races and Johnson four. 3. Darrell posted: 05.22.2006 - 3:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, Bodine was injured at the time. Then, in the next race at Dover the announcers say there had been a war of words between Davey and Dale heating up because Dale said NASCAR was helping Davey/Ford. I find it very interesting that Ford finally won its first race in 1991 at Charlotte then the next year, Chevy finally wins its first race of 1992 at Charlotte. Did NASCAR help Ford win in 1991 and then help GM win in 1992? I don't know. I'm just saying it's interesting. 22. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.12.2019 - 5:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Geoff Bodine was not suspended. He missed The Winston, this race and the Dover race before returning the following race. Not sure when or how he was injured. Maybe someone else knows. The deal with his team, the Budweiser #11 car. Tommy Ellis was substituting for an injured Bodine in The Winston in the 11 car. Post race inspection after the All Star race discovered that the engine was 3.5 cubic inches too big. At first Nascar gave the "death penalty" to the entire team, as was described by the TBS broadcast of the Coca Cola 600. After appeal, they reinstated Tommy Ellis, and shortened the suspensions of Junior Johnson and crew chief Tim Brewer to 4 races and had to pay a stiff fine. That is why starting with this race it is the #97 car instead of the #11 car. Because that car, owner and crew chief were ineligible for 4 races. Tommy Ellis and Geoff Bodine each raced 2 races in the #97 Budweiser for car owner Flossie Johnson. They still allowed Junior Johnson to be the listed owner for the #22 car team. He and Tim Brewer just were not allowed to be in the garage or pits. They were allowed to be in the stands or press box and communicate by radio. The four races that the #97 Budweiser car is in place of the #11 car should be listed as owned by Flossie Johnson instead of Junior Johnson if you want to be technically correct. 23. jensenators posted: 01.12.2019 - 5:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Correct. Geoff was injured in a practice crash for the Winston. Tommy Ellis was I would say an unknowing participant since he had just been hired to relieve Geoff, which would be why Tommy had his suspension nullified on appeal. 24. Thankfully King Richard was uninjured. 26. Steve posted: 07.10.2020 - 12:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Geoff Bodine crashed in practice before The Winston. He suffered a punctured lung and broke some ribs (mentioned in the broadcast by Ken Squier). The engine that was deemed illegal was The Winston engine, which Tommy Ellis ran. Ellis was just a victim of this but he was originally suspended and fined 18k. Both the fine and suspension were overturned. Junior Johnson and Tim Brewer were suspended though and the #11 car couldn't run either. So they ran the #97 instead with Flossie Johnson listed as owner. 27.
