When he came by for the white flag, NASCAR also gave him the black flag and penalized him 1 second for rough driving, giving the win to Davey Allison. 2. I don't remember for sure when they found it, but it must have been in post-race inspection after Talladega, because Geoff didn't race in The Winston, the 600 or Dover. Junior put the team in Flossie's name (his wife) and Bodine raced at Sonoma and Pocono in the #97. 13. Bobby posted: 09.04.2009 - 4:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Chris, thats almost totally right about the Junior Johnson situation. NASCAR found the engine was oversized at the Winston, and Junior, Tim Brewer, and Tommy Ellis (who got into the 11 after Geoff had been hurt in practice) were suspended for 12 races. All parties appealed, and the suspensions for Junior and Brewer were lowered to 4 races. During those 4 races, Junior's wife, Flossie, entered the car using the number 97. Tommy Ellis' suspension was rescinded completely, and he drove the car at the 600 and Dover because of Bodine's injuries. Geoff came back from injury here at Sonoma and also the following race at Pocono, driving the 97. After Pocono, Junior, Brewer, Geoff, and the 11 were all back together. 21. The cars visible in the photo are the #49 of Stanley Smith, #52 of Bobby Hillin Jr, #55 Ted Musgrave, #68 Bobby Hamilton, and #99 John Krebs. Given their finishing positions, I would guess it was the last lap. However, I can't identify which corner it is; the car are turning right, and there is a hill in the background with part of a banner showing (possibly for Hardee's). Would someone be able to ID the corner based on the info I have? 23. martin-n-rusty posted: 05.24.2011 - 9:22 am Rate this comment: (2) (2) While some of Dales victories might of been a little rough, there was no doubt Rudd all but mugged Allison on that corner. It's one thing to get on a guys bumper, but when you plow a guy through a corner, and go through it yourself quite wide, there is no doubt you were looking to put the guy through the wall, and not "rattle his cage" 24. The proper penalty for not honoring a black flag before the end of the race was to be placed at the tail end of the lead lap (like happened to Regan Smith at Talladega). The decision kept Rudd 65 points closer to Earnhardt than he should have been (-61 to Rudd, +4 for Earnhardt), thus preserving (for the time being) a remote semblance of a championship battle. 30. However, I don't think Earnhardt should be stripped of his win nor should've Rudd. No driver should ever have a win taken away unless their car itself has a BIG, unfair advantage. 32. However his new crew chief Larry McReynolds had experience winning on road courses before with Ricky Rudd while at King Racing and helped work with Allison to get him into a better mood and better prepared for this race. Their efforts paid off as they got the victory here although McReynolds said he wished it was under better circumstances. This was Allison's only road course victory. His two laps led here are the lowest amount he led in any of his wins. 35. Enough times where a precedent was set and Ricky should have been shown the checkered flag. It's not spinning Davey on purpose, it's racing hard to win and not being able predict what the driver in front of you is going to do. Ricky guessed wrong and they both could have spun, but only Davey did. BTW, I have been watching almost every race that I can from the 80's and 90's and the 'Dale Earnhardt wrecked everybody to win' is such fake news. Saying it over and over again won't ever make it true when we have videos and can see for ourselves. If anything, Dale took more than he gave. Everybody raced a little harder when they got around him. 43. But Davey should've known Rudd was going to drive it way down in there. NASCAR really could've given him the black flag at a better time than right at the checkered flag. NASCAR would've done better without the penalty than with. This would've been Hall of Famer, Waddell Wilson's final win as a crew chief if Rudd had won. Also @32, no that was banning Curtis Turner 47. WardBurtonFan posted: 04.09.2020 - 1:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) We all know the reason why Rudd was shafted. If that was the case, Kyle Petty wouldn't have been given 5 laps at Charlotte in '96 because he's "Richard's boy". There are plenty of racing families that have and haven't gotten preferential treatment; I don't know why you'd isolate this one. Davey's heritage had nothing to do with what happened here. Like at Richmond in 1990, several of NASCAR's upper management was not at this race, and someone who usually doesn't call a race made the call. 49. Smith and another bringing out the final caution, a brake issue sending Richard Petty into the tire barriers in Turn 1 and it took the safety teams 10-15 minutes to remove Petty from the #43. Late in the race, Tommy Kendall made an early pit stop and was rewarded when Morgan Shepherd and Mike Chase crashed, giving Kendall the lead over Rick Mast and others, Petty was in second but had the late crash end his hopes of a 201st win. Rusty Wallace, who had dominated, had complained of a stuttering engine all race which led to him being on 7 cylinders at the finish. Tommy Kendall was being caught and passed by Mark Martin, then with 4 to go, Kendall spun Martin while Martin tried to pass him on a late-brake move in Turn 7. Kendall proceeded to have a tire issue, giving the lead to Davey Allison. Coming to the white flag, the slow lapped car of Dave Marcis slowed up the 28, allowing Ricky Rudd to get to the bumper and spin the 28 around, NASCAR was none too happy and penalized the 5 a second of time behind whoever was in second place, which happened to be the guy he spun, Davey Allison. 53. rateus posted: 02.17.2021 - 4:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @45 Bill Schmitt's long career included better days than this, he had back-to-back top 5 finishes at the season-opening Riverside events in 1979 and 1980. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
