There were a lot of cautions and wrecks, and one that I still remember was the 12 car wreck on the frontstretch that was started when Ernie Irvan spun Hut Stricklin while they were racing for the lead. Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty ended up crashed right in front of me. It was a hell of a sight. And then it started raining near the end and they called it. But it was a great race and I'll always remember it . 2. Matt posted: 12.31.2005 - 12:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) J.D. He was caught up in the big wreck triggered by Ernie Irvan. Great job by Hut Stricklin to finish 4th after getting spun out. This was the first of two carrer starts for Indy 500 patrticipant John Paul Jr, and the only start for Gary Wright. 5. His right front tire climbed over Dale Earnhardt's right front fender and the front of his car went WAY up in the air. 7. There was a long red flag, and they actually got under caution again for 3 laps before it started pouring again and the race was called. yea petty got major air the wreck took out some pretty big names as well Both Pettys Earnhardt Allison D.Waltrip Alan Kulwicki Ricky Rudd and even more than that 8. Ernie had the race won but a rain shower started just seconds after he was the first of leaders to make his final green flag stop. The race was red flagged on lap 177 and after a long delay the rain stopped and the cars returned to the track. Just as the field rolled back out on the track behind the pace car, the rain started falling again. Sensing the race would never be able to go back green, leader Rusty Wallace (very low on fuel) shut his car off and had the lapped car of Dale Earnhardt push him around the track under yellow until NASCAR pulled the plug. NASCAR threw the white flag the second time by and Rusty started his car back up and finished the last lap under yellow under his own power to take the win. 13. The first red flag ended up being like 2 hours long before they got going again. But only for a few minutes 14. And I think I remember the announcers saying the time of the rain delay was 2 hrs 38 minutes. This was a good race I wonder who would have won had they been able to restart and go the distance. The top 3 cars before the rain delay ernie irvan rusty Wallace and mark martin looked pretty equal and were trading the lead back and forth before they made a pit stop. Hut stricklin had a fast car but something happened to it from the spin he never was as competitive after the big crash I think he finished 4th. Before the crash he was as fast as ernie irvan and the rest of them but after he lost something. 27. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.15.2019 - 6:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Alright, just no race that I can think of out of every race I've viewed up through 91 has any winner making significantly less money than 2nd place and basically the same as 3rd. I'm aware that Rusty would get paid less than a Mark Martin for finishing the same likely because Rusty had 25% ownership in the car. It didn't work out that way for his other win in the year or for Darrell Waltrip for example who was the owner of his car. Just surprised when I saw that. 41. GoPM21 posted: 01.15.2019 - 8:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @41 The purse money at that time wasn't tied to who owns what share of the team. It was based on contingency programs and finishing order. Occasionally the track would offer incentives as well. I seem to recall one year IMS offering $400/lap led. 42. Corey posted: 01.15.2019 - 9:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @40 As 41 alluded to, the winnings was a combination of finishing position an incentive bonuses through various programs. Some of the programs only allowed a certain number of teams and was usually based on the previous seasons performance. The reason Rusty Wallace has less money then Mark Martin is solely based on the fact that the #2 Penske car did not exist in 1990 and therefore could not participate in a lot of the incentive programs. I'll use this race as an example. The money listed for 44 of Irv Hoerr and the 52 of Jimmy Means was probably what the were paid based on only on their finishes and nothing more. The 3 of Dale Earnhardt and the 5 of Ricky Rudd earned a lot more money due in part to the programs despite finish next the other two drivers. 43. Scott B posted: 01.15.2019 - 9:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This was the beer wars era. Rusty was probably missing out of some Bud contingency money. Though he did win the MGD sponsored race in the Miller car, which makes for a happy Monday morning meeting back in the #2 shop. 44. Of the quartet this was his only trip to the Pennsylvania victory lane at the wheel of a Pontiac, the Penske #2 team had switched to Fords by the time of his other three wins. Wallace had two prior runner-up finishes here before he finally unlocked the gate to the winner's circle. 47. The caution for rain came in the middle of a pit cycle, and Wallace (who was 2nd behind Irvan before pitstops) could only go until about lap 176 before he had to pit. The rain caution came out on lap 173, and the red was displayed after 176 laps. After a lengthy delay, they got the cars rolling again...until a downpour drenched the track and ended it at lap 179. Wallace, on fumes, was pushed by Earnhardt until the white flag, and then took the checkered under his own power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
