My guess is that his brakes failed going into Turn 5 (now Turn 9), as he was passing Jimmy Means on the inside, and Jimmy, with his right front, caught J.D.'s left rear as his car rocketed toward the wall, sort of like what happened to Earnhardt, when Schrader had nowhere to go. Does anybody know for sure, or is that what happened? 8. The race was shaping up to be a thriller until Mark Martin spun coming off turn one on the last lap and Davey Allison spun to avoid him, allowing Ernie to cruise over the last lap. 9. " The race was under a red flag for one hour and forty-eight minutes for repairs to the guardrail and removal of what had once been that familiar old #70. Most of that time was spent on the latter task, and in the end, they simply lifted the car onto a flatbed and tied a tarp over it. One of the saddest moments I've ever known was watching that truck pull away, knowing that never again would we see John Delphus McDuffie or the old #70." They must have announced it during the race. 11. Matt posted: 12.18.2006 - 5:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's an article from the AP on the cause of death: An autopsy performed Monday revealed that veteran NASCAR driver J.D. McDuffie died of severe head injuries caused by a horrific crash at Watkins Glen Raceway. McDuffie, 52, of Sanford, N.C., was killed Sunday in a crash only five laps into the Budweiser at the Glen. McDuffie's car lost a wheel at the end of the back straightaway and it slammed into a retaining wall at more than 100 mph. The car then became airborne before coming to rest on its roof. McDuffie was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, N.Y., for the autopsy, which was performed by Dr. Alaud Din. ''He died of severe head injuries,'' Din said. ''He had a fracture of the skull and severe brain injuries.'' Din added that he couldn't determine if McDuffie died on impact. McDuffie raced on the NASCAR circuit for more than 20 years. In 652 career starts prior to Sunday, his best finish was third in 1971 at Malta, N.Y. One of the last owner-drivers on the tour, McDuffie was one of only 40 drivers to earn more than $1 million on the Winston Cup circuit. ''J.D. was a good fellow, he really was,'' NASCAR driver Brett Bodine said. ''He represented someone that loved the sport enough to invest his entire life into it. J.D.'s family didn't have a whole lot, but they had a race car and they went racing.'' McDuffie was one of the likeable men on the circuit. When he was struggling to come up with a motor for his car last February to race in the Daytona 500, some of the other drivers took up a collection to get him the motor. Ironically, McDuffie did win the last race he finished, an exhibition Saturday night at Shangri-La Speedway in Oswego, N.Y. ''We were talking about that in the drivers meeting this morning,'' Ernie Irvan said after winning Sunday's race. ''We were joking with him and saying, 'J.D., you've been holding back on us all these years, haven't you.' He just laughed and kept puffing on that cigar he always had. I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my life.'' McDuffie is survived by his wife Ima Jean and two children. 22. He was probably going upwards of 160 mph going into the corner and he barely slowed down before pretty much coming to a complete stop. It's ironic that Jimmy Means was able to walk away more or less unscathed since he hit the berriers the same place J.D. did just as hard as J.D. did. In any case, it was and continues to be a sad loss for racing. J.D. deserved to go out of racing the way he wanted to. J.D.! 72. nascarman posted: 03.20.2015 - 5:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) From everything I've heard he was just killed because of the force of the impact. You never see a car heading straight to the wall with the right side, all of the force of the crash was in one direction. There wasn't anything stopping his head from moving to the right with that kind of force. I read something written by a corner worker who was at the scene of the wreck who said nothing went through the car, the roof didn't cave in at all, the car wasn't badly damaged. It was obvious though that he was killed instantly and the reason that it took so long to get him out of the car was they needed to wait for the police and the coroner to come and investigate the accident. 73. I knew back then, when they brought out the white sheets to block the view of the car, that J.D. had died. In viewing the video, I noticed something odd. A few seconds after the first corner worker dives down behind the far side of the car, something large and round rolls away to the right onto the grass. It looks for all the world like a helmet. Does anyone else have an opinion of what that might be? 74. Cp posted: 10.28.2015 - 7:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I believe it was one of the safety workers' helmet 75. And, you fans out there, you wonder how these guys can get in these cars can go back out and restart this race. Hey, it's their job, it's what they do and there's a hundred thousand people here this afternoon to watch them do that job. There's not a one of these drivers that wants to be in that racecar right now, they want to be in the garage area hugging their wife, their girlfriend, their mom, their crewmembers, whoever. I don't want to be here now, I want to be over there looking at Ned, looking at Bob and just not saying anything. But we've got a job to do, and that's report to you who wins, who loses, and what happens during the day. Jean, we all love you and we're sorry." 78. His words were pure, respectful, from the heart and full of sorrow and that is why his words were so powerful and yet needed to be said. I miss BP and JD. Heartbreaking in every way, but their names bring nothing but fondness for where the sport was during their careers and I hope they know, 25 years after the incident, how much JD is still remembered and respected and for BP I hope he knows how beloved he was as a driver and a broadcaster 82. Dave Marcis was another driver that crashed during the weekend leading up to the race on Sunday and dropped to the rear of the field on his own; Jerry Punch reported during the broadcast that his backup car was his Darlington car. Dave didn't make it very far with the backup car. Wally Dallenbach's #90 was a simple white car with red numerals and actually displayed "Roush Racing" on the flanks. Irv Hoerr's #44 was a blue base with a silver down and rear, separate from the blue base by a gold trim. Numerals were also gold. Oma Kimbrough's #13 was a simple red car with white numerals and a blue trim on the bottom. The second caution for debris was for a cut tire from the #94 of Terry Labonte, who had led the first 19 laps but spun while running second due to the cut tire. The tire liner came off in Turn 6 as Labonte was limping back to the pits. Labonte never recovered and later blew an engine in the race. Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace, Davey Allison, and Mark Martin, running 1-4, put on a great show about midway through the race for the lead after Ernie Irvan had spun off course by himself while leading and ended up a distant 5th on the track at the time. Kim Cambpell either spun or got off course four times during the race, the fourth being the most damaging, as he spun and backed hard into the tires in Turn 5. Hut Stricklin and Bill Elliott crashed at the start-finish line taking the checkered flag, with Hut getting the worst of it into the inside wall. 85. He was forced to by rule because of going to a backup car after crashing in practice. Michael Waltrip also had to go to a backup car. Didn't see it mentioned here yet that he broke his shoulder blade in a practice crash but still started the race. 87. The autopsy report indicated he died of massive head injuries, probably a basal skull fracture due to the forces involved. You can clearly see in the video of the wreck that no fence post went inside the car. In fact you can watch the post he hits fall away from the car and hit the ground on the other side of the fence. Also of note, that unlike Allan Simonsen's accident at Le Mans, JD hit the fence on the passenger side of the car, meaning JD's head did not hit the fence. For those who have chided Nascar for not taking action after this accident, they actually did, although it may have been the track rather than Nascar itself. As mentioned above, as a result of this accident along with Tommy Kendalls, the inner loop was created, reducing speeds before entering what was turn 5. As for soft walls, the wall JD hit would be considered a soft wall, it was a tire barrier and fence which gave way upon impact. Lastly, for comparison, watch the in car footage of Richard Petty's crash in the 1986 Daytona 500. After losing a tire, Richard hits the wall with the passenger side of the car and the in car footage shows how far his head moves without any head & neck restraint. It wasn't anything as macabre as what some of the comments have suggested. 91. Hard not to get emotional hearing that, knowing how BP had lost his wife two months earlier and thus how sincere every word of what he's saying is. Another powerful moment comes in the uncut satellite feed immediately afterwards, when BP comforts Bob Jenkins during the commercial break (this was the first fatal crash Jenkins ever had to announce, at least as part of a Winston Cup broadcast, and he was very affected by it). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
