Steve posted: 05.16.2006 - 6:16 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This race was also the only start for Steve Perry, who was driving Junie Donlavey's car, and it was the last time that retired USAR Hooter's Pro Cup legend Brian Ross started a Cup race. And along with all of that, Dave Marcis' 10th place finish was his only Top 10 of the year, and his second to last Top 10 (he would later finish 10th at Bristol in April of 1994). 7. There were two; the Brian Ross from Indiana who ran ARCA and Hooters ProCup, and the Brian Ross from NY who ran Modifieds and Busch North. 12. Steve posted: 10.20.2009 - 11:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This Brian Ross is the latter. I only recently discovered that there were in fact two racers named Brian Ross (also an ABC News journalist is so named!). There is a website much like this one just for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series (www.procupdigest.com), and his DOB listed there matches that of the Brian Ross who was also in ARCA (on this site, his driver ID is rossbr02, as opposed to 01). Sorry for the confusion! Despite catching a piece of the 15 car accident on Lap 70, Hut Stricklin brought Bobby Allison's Raybestos Buick home in 4th place! He also moved up from 16th to 14th in the Quest for the Cup Standings. 13. Schroeder51 posted: 09.10.2010 - 9:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The big crash in this race was triggered by runner up Geoff Bodine, who got into the back of Chad Little on the backstretch on the restart from Mark Martin's crash. Little spun into the outside wall, and behind him, Ken Schrader, Ernie Irvan, Sterling Marlin, Dale Jarrett, Larry Pearson, Joe Ruttman, Lake Speed, Stanley Smith, and Derrike Cope all piled up. Brett Bodine crashed after he ran through oil from Davey Allison's blown engine. Rick Wilson went hard into the turn 1 wall after contact with Steve Perry. Alan Kulwicki and Rusty Wallace were both running in the top 5 when they slid in oil and both simultaneously spun and crashed into the turn 3 wall. Dale Earnhardt had nowhere to go and crashed into both of them. 14. Schroeder51 posted: 09.11.2010 - 9:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wilson actually lost a wheel in his crash. In addition the oil that Kulwicki and Wallace crashed in was oil from Kulwicki's own blown engine. 15. Schroeder51 posted: 03.23.2015 - 9:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) After seeing this race on Youtube, I can safely say Brett Bodine crashed after blowing a right front tire, and not after running through oil from Davey Allison's engine as I previously thought. Blown tires claimed quite a few drivers in this race; Spencer and Petty also crashed after blowing out right front tires. There were a LOT of hard crashes in this race. Mark Martin was running in second place to Allison when he crashed and brought out the first caution. Alan Kulwicki was the only other car on the lead lap besides Gant when he blew his engine and crashed. Ironically, pit reporter Steve Evans was in the midst of reporting how Kulwicki's crew chief, Paul Andrews, was happy because the car was running better than it had all day. The crash also took out Rusty Wallace, who was in third place, but a lap behind. From that point on, Gant had a lap lead over the rest of the field. 21. NEPARacefan posted: 04.05.2015 - 1:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the second straight Peak 500 I attended. I was at the race the following June where Gant as actually more dominant.... - Davey Allison's engine had a rev limiter which might have led to it's demise. - there were several hard hits due to blown tires. Kyle Petty was in agony when he was being removed from his car on the back stretch after blowing a tired exiting turn two. 22. Evan posted: 05.20.2015 - 10:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gant always thrived on the tougher tracks, despite his age he could wheel the car and his experience from being a roofer and working on the tops of houses with the sun beating down helped him to sustain and sit in the seat, especially on hot days where the car temperature was high. Gant's best tracks were Martinsville, Dover, Darlington, and Richmond. He got wins at Talladega, Michigan, and Pocono but those were outliers as they were fuel mileage wins, but they were still wins. He had one of the best in the business during that 1991 season, Andy Petree who was a good crew chief who later won two championships with Dale Earnhardt. Andy Petree would later purchase the team from Leo Jackson and own the 33 team. 23. nascarman posted: 05.26.2015 - 1:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Qualifying Results: Pos. Driver Speed 1. Davey hung out in his dad's pit waiting to see if Hut needed assistance. Turns out the driver pitting next to Hut needed help and that was Kyle Petty, who's leg began to hurt and Davey subbed for awhile. Kyle got back in and was in the car when he crashed while running in 5th spot. Also of note, listening to the MRN broadcast Ir said that Stricklin had tested the week before at Martinsville or North Wilkesboro. Stricklin reliqished the car to car owner Bobby Allison who tested the car and ran very close to the same lap times as Stricklin. There was talk on the broadcast that Allison could make one more Cup start and Bobby didn't deny it in an interview. That obviously never happened. Found it funny though that Allison was a little disappointed in his lap times, saying "I didn't do as good as I thought I was going to do." Gotta love the competitiveness of Allison that's for sure. Also, this was the first week anyone had any real clue as to Richard Petty retiring. Apparently some news broadcaster in NC had broke the news the week of the race that Petty was going to retire after the 1992 season. When asked about it Petty didn't confirm nor deny the allegation but seemed annoyed to be talking about it and that someone would say that. Turned out obviously to be true. 27. It wasn't and the malfunctioning part couldn't have slowed him down much on his way to this dominant victory.' Grant drove the same car to victory in this race as he had driven in his previous two victories at Darlington and Richmond. He of course then won with it again at Martinsville the following week. 28. There were thousands of long cracks, craters, holes, loose stuff, every bad thing you could think of. I've never seen a track in worse shape than this one. Lucky nobody got seriously injured in any of the wrecks. 33. In that era it was common to have many more cars attempt to qualify; most of the teams listed there routinely attempted Dover. Baker being in the broadcast booth only means that he was not in the race, had he succeeded in qualifying TNN would have found someone else (or, more likely, Joy and Bonnett would have worked as a 2 man booth). 40.
