That #28 was a dominant car @ Charlotte that year! On a side note, this race was the absolute coldest race I ever attended....hand's down!!!! 4. He would have run away (far away) with it had his engine not blown. 5. myself posted: 05.17.2007 - 3:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Last win for the Bodine/Johnson marriage. 6. He had quite a bit of damage, but the high attrition rate still gave him a top 10 finish. 9. JCS posted: 08.27.2008 - 8:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was a good race. DW managed to finish ninth after a wreck early in the race. When Ricky Rudd got wrecked in this race, he was knocked out of contention as a challenge to Earnhardt for the '91 championship. 10. I still remember Mike Skinner's car catching fire in the frontstretch infield right infront of us, Rudd/others crashing, and Bodine winning. I remember a few bits and pieces here and there also, but nothing specific. Wish I could remember more about the race, but it was 3/4 of my life ago... Pretty cool to be able to look back on it on this website years later. 11. I remember being impressed with then-unknown Mike Skinner, when I saw how well he recovered from a spin right in front of us in the colorful Glidden Paints car. Richard Petty finished a respectable 12th. This race was the turning point for the 1991 Winston Cup title, as Ricky Rudd's crash pretty much eliminated him as a threat to Dale Earnhardt's 4th driving title. The '91 Mello Yello 500 was also the beginning of the Ford victory streak that lasted until May 1992. The Fords won every race until the next event at Charlotte - the 1992 Coca-Cola 600, which Dale Earnhardt won in his Chevrolet. 13. Teague's car was white and green, I remember that, and he spun off four, Ernie caught him, and it ripped a lot of the right rear off of the 4 car and he wound up in the grass. Granted, I was four, going on five, when that happened, so my memory of it might be off a little, but I definitely remember them coming together and it ruining what had been a good race for Ernie (they were talking about him a lot on television, which is probably a big part of why I remember him crashing). Don't remember a bit of the race otherwise, just that incident. 16. Many questioned if the fuel tank was legal, but NASCAR never actually deemed it illegal. 17. So it became the Fan Appreciation Tour. 18. The same article claimed Johnson crew members obscured viewing of the 'test' and that NASCAR shooed reporters out of the area. 22. My guess would be that Kellogg's bought Teague' s car after Larry DNQ'd. However, Ken Squire did say that Teague was in the #99, so perhaps the ticker was inaccurate. Or Ken was. Someone had it wrong anyway. 32. Teague's car was yellow and red, not white and green~ He ran the car the entire race, so I don't know why some were saying it was Larry Pearson in the car~ Someone was wrong on that~ This was the only time Teague ever drove a Kellogg's car, and they got the sponsorship for that race after Pearson failed to qualify for the event~ Teague drove several races for Ralph Ball in the #99 car prior to this race, but this was his only start in the 1991 Cup series.. after failing to make the field for the Daytona 500, and the Coca-Cola 600~ Here's a picture of Teague's #99 Kellogg's car~ http://bit.ly/2x1mNUn 35. That Lap 1 spin could have been a lot worse. Dave Marcis spun behind Waltrip but it appeared no other cars were involved. Skinner spun out of Turn 2 initially to bring out the second caution, but didn't make contact with anything. On the way back to the pits the car caught fire in Turn 4, and that's what ended his day. Skinner told Mike Joy later in the pit Center that he believed a rear tire that had been shredded cut the oil line that caused the fire. The frontstretch infield grass must have been wet because when Skinner's aflame car hit it, it helped extinguish the fire. Early in the race Jimmy Means got some tv time but not for good reasons; he was struggling with some sort of mechanical issue. The car was clearly an Olds for this race for some reason, not his typical Pontiacs. Joe Ruttman's car was a Chevrolet Lumina. Ricky Rudd would have missed the crash but Derrike Cope had ARCA brakes and plowed into Rudd. Greg Sacks was penalized five laps during the Rudd caution for unsafe pit road procession. The broadcast mentioned Sacks entered pit road way too hot and spun out on it. Bobby Hamilton had a strong Top 10 run going before he dropped out like so many others did late in the race. Ernie Irvan's damage from the crash with Teague was primarily all on the right side. Irvan went back out and ran a few laps, with the only sheet metal on that damaged side being a used pit board that was applied upside down, meaning the fans got a good look of an upside down '4' every lap Irvan ran. 38. The book followed Kyle through his preparation on race morning and told a semi-fictionalized story of the race itself, highlighting basic facets of the sport such as pit stops and caution flags along the way. (Kerry Teague's wreck on lap 130 was the chosen case study for a crash.) In the book, Kyle Petty "won" the race (an upbeat ending for young audiences) but in reality, the Mello Yello ended the day seven laps down in 15th. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
