When Waltrip's engine expired with about seven or eight laps to go, it was pretty evident Allison had the win in hand, as Shepherd had no one to draft by with. 4. larry spencer posted: 10.06.2005 - 10:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) good job Davey 5. Bodine and Kulwicki were good, but they couldn't keep up in the draft of the 21 and 28. Without the crash it would have been a great duel between Marlin, Elliott, Irvan, and Schrader. He crashed his only car in practice before the Twin 125's and drove fellow Oldsmobile driver Rick Mast's backup car in the 1st Twin 125. He wiped that car out in the 125 miler but was able to fall back on his qualifying time to make the race. He then borrowed another Oldsmobile (Eddie Bierschwale's car that failed to qualify), put his #14 on the side and used that car in the Daytona 500. Foyt did something similar in the 1987 Daytona 500 as well. He drove Rick Wilson's backup Oldsmobile in the 500 after wiping out his primary car in the Twin 125's. 23. myself posted: 02.15.2008 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sad that Davey won't be @ the 50th running w/ all other past champions. :( 24. Also Martin also began his foray into diecast as his Valvoline car from 1992 was the first Mark Martin car ever issued in toy form. 2. Interstate Batteries and Joe Gibbs Racing debuted their car with Dale Jarrett aboard. Interstate Batteries began a long-relationship and it remains to this very day. 3. Was this Buddy Baker's final Daytona 500? 4. Bill Elliott's debut with the powerful Junior Johnson team which would finish 2nd in points. 5. The other was the big wreck that took out some string contenders that were a threat for the win, Ernie Irvan's aggression strikes again after a 1991 year that saw him ruffle a great deal of feathers and it eventually came to a head in 1992. Richard Petty was spinning out towards Lake Lloyd when he was in the crash after getting hit from behind by Michael Waltrip. A minor footnote of this race was Alan Kuwlicki who spun down the infield unscathed finished 4th after not being given much of a chance to do anything during the race weekend. Pretty clean race overall other than the big one that took out the front runners. This race also had a collector's set made of the top 3 finishing cars in the race(All Fords), Davey Allison, Morgan Shepherd, and Geoff Bodine. 52. Shepherd moved into the seat of the iconic #21 to replace Dale Jarrett after the future Cup champion left to join the new #18 Interstate Batteries entry from retirement-bound Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs. Jarrett and Gibbs' first race together actually saw quite a bit of potential. DJ had the sharp green-and-black #18 Chevrolet Lumina up in eighth place when he was taken out in the big one just before halfway. Not the best debut for the new team but a sign that Gibbs squad was going to be something special for the future. 75. In addition to the previously mentioned addition of the new #16 Keystone Ford for road racer Wally Dallenbach, Jr., marking its transition into one of the first multi-car teams in NASCAR alongside Hendrick Motorsports, the team's #6 Ford Thunderbird of Mark Martin had a new sponsorship with Valvoline motor oil replacing Folgers Coffee. The new sponsor came with a new look as Martin's #6 morphed from crimson red into the iconic white, red, and blue racer he would race through 1995. Martin's first outing in a points race in the Valvoline colors was going well as he was running ninth just before halfway. Unfortunately, like Jarrett and many others, he was taken out in the big one. The front end of the #6 was smashed to the point Martin had to almost look out the window to get it back to the pits. The team was able to fix it so he could get out for a few more championship points though. 76. Josh posted: 01.18.2018 - 2:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #5 Ricky Rudd status: Cylinder Head 77. Those 2 combined to bring that car home with probably the best finish they could've ever hoped for with a 17th. As they said on the broadcast, Barkdoll probably didn't think he'd have to drive it as long as he did. Wonder why he didn't just act as an owner and have someone else try to qualify and start his car if he wasn't going to finish the race? 81. Why is that notable? In the 1990s there were a lot of jokes that Kyle Petty looked like that famous Greek keyboardist. Petty's 1990s look included long hair and a mustache similar to what the musician had at the time. Jokes aside Kyle Petty's sixth-place finish here would be his best in the Daytona 500. 82. While Teague's lone start in the Great American Race ended in a crash with Rick Wilson his Cutlass still looked good as he adorned it with a patriotic American flag-themed Team USA livery. Speedweeks 1992 coincided with the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France so everyone was likely cheering for Team USA at the time. 83. Not quite sure why it's listed as an Oldsmobile. 84. cjs3872 posted: 01.08.2020 - 1:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I believe Kyle Petty was actually a lap behind for the entire second half of the race, completing only 199 laps, not the full 200, though he still finished sixth. 85. In those 16 Daytona 500 attempts, this marked the only one in which Delma Cowart saw the checkered flag. He failed to qualify 12 times, and the other 3 times he did make the race, he failed to finish. 86. Dick didn't finish 1992 with RahMoc, he got the #8 SNICKERS car which was driven by Rick Wilson in this race. * Buddy Baker finished 11th in his final 500 appearance, whilst being commentator for TNN at the time and later for CBS and TNN. * Phil Parsons finishes 10th in Melling's first race without Bill Elliott driving and ahead of Bill no less as he is taken out in the big wreck on the super-stretch. * Phil Barkdoll finishes 17th for his efforts. * Delma Cowart makes the race and finishes 25th in this one. Not bad for his efforts. * A.J. Foyt gets a 21st in his final 500 appearance. 88. This would be the last Daytona 500 appearance for the team before shutting down. 94. Providing information not otherwise available, such as your posts stating who the broadcasters were, though not everyone will agree about the relevance of that, is one thing. Announcing that a certain race was Joe Shlabotnik's 4th top 10 of the season is just spam, and posting 35 comments in a row along those same lines isn't helpful. 96. I wouldn't mind seeing one or two every so often as an "interesting trivia", but the endless stream of them every day serves no purpose. Along the same lines, spreading out the broadcaster posts to just a few each day would be preferable to filling up the "recent comments". 100.
