Before he came in the caution came out with, i don't know, 50 laps remaining, and he beat Harry Gant and Davey Allison back to the start/finish line to put them a lap down and keep himself on the lead lap by himself. Elliott pitted and started at the rear of the field while all the cars on the tail end of the lead lap were in front of him. The race had no more cautions and Elliott easily won his 3rd of 4 in a row over Harry Gant who had a stronger car than Davey, who led the most laps but finished 4th. What an unlikely winner of this race considering Elliott's car was complete junk all day. Unbelievable. 2. Not sure what he would have had had he pitted with the rest under the green. I think Elliott was going to get a top 10 possibly a top 5 whether he got the caution of not... 3. Had he been in 20th something I am pretty sure he would have been a lap down. I can't find anything that tells if he was running down the leaders or not but he was close to a top 5 car at least. He as still picking off cars when he was on a lap by himself. If he stole one he didn't do it by much. 7. Bill Elliott was, admittedly quite anonymously, on the lead lap when the final round of green flag pit stops started. He was not going to win the race without the fortunate caution, but he was going to end up with a Top 10. Dick Trickle had a moment during the final run where he almost nosed the car into the frontstretch inside wall, but saved it and finished a nice 5th. Trickle did not lead a lap during the day but ran with the leaders all day and the Top 5 for him and the Stavola #8 team was fully deserved. 13. Ryan posted: 07.03.2020 - 10:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Allison and Gant dominated the second half of the race and when they pitted, Bill Elliott, who had been a top-10 car chose to stay out and stretch his fuel in hopes of trapping everyone a lap down if a caution came out. Elliott chose not to run camber in his rear end like many of the other teams did and because of it his car ran like a plow. Mike Wallace spun bringing out the caution and Elliott trapped everyone a lap down. He got to pit and when he did it put Gant and Allison and many of the other leaders on that lap on the "tail end" of the lead lap. There wasn't another caution and Elliott ended up winning by about half a lap for his third straight victory in 1992. He would win at Darlington the following week tying a modern era record of four consecutive wins. He wouldn't win again in 1992 until the epic Hooters 500 finale at Atlanta. That day he won the battle, but lost the war. It was probably the most heart broken victory lane setting/"celebration" of all time. 17.
