Running the remainder of season, Hensley scored 4 top-10s for the team. It was the closest he ever got to running a full season of Cup. 5. They never opened up pit road. 6. Cars were running excessive degrees of negative camber in their rear ends to help on the entrance and exit corner speeds and were snapping axles as a result. A lot of them were the GM teams who were still sorting out their new cylinder heads or running the old 1991 heads and getting out horsepowered by the Ford teams who were on a huge winning streak. The GM teams ran excessive negative camber to try and stay up with the Ford teams to offset the horsepower advantage. GM teams had there new cylinder heads sorted out by the Summer and backed off of the camber settings and went on a nine race winning streak, which matched the Ford win streak at the start of the year. 11. jC... posted: 03.06.2012 - 10:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was not televised live because of the NFL Draft. He had driven with broken lower ribs, separated cartilage and a bruised lung. The Martinsville wreck aggravated these injuries and totaled yet another No. 28 Ford. But in true Allison fashion, Davey drove through injuries and pain to win at North Wilkesboro between Briston and this Martinsville race. This story came from Peter Golenbock's book "Miracle: The Saga of Bobby Allison and the Alabama Gang." 13. Nobody knew it at the time but this was the revitalization of Terry's career and began his track towards his second Winston Cup title a few years later. 17. myself posted: 04.13.2015 - 12:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Not so sure about that HD11. Labonte struggled in Hagan's car in 1993 and saw the writing on the wall for that team, and made a good move taking himself and Kellogg's to Mr. H starting in 1994. 20. A #16 Roush crew member from the backstretch helped a shaken Kyle Petty get out of the car. Late in the race Darrell Waltrip had a fast car and was battling hard with Earnhardt, trying to get back on the lead lap when there were only a few cars left on it. DW eventually fell back a bit and was behind leader Mark Martin, who took the lead when Earnhardt had his problem, when the Kyle Petty caution happened. DW again fought hard with Mark but was not able to make up his lap (by about a hood) when the #1 spun in Turn 4 to put out the final caution. DW definitely would have had a shot to win had he made up his lap during either of those cautions. We don't see that kind of racing today with the way it's set up now. 21. @Statscrash posted: 10.18.2018 - 10:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How did Mark Martin build a 12 second lead in 4 laps? 22. Anonymous posted: 10.19.2018 - 8:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) He didn't, judging from the video of the race. I think the 1 in 12 is a typo. 23. Spen posted: 10.19.2018 - 11:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Agreed. There are ways I could see that happening (say, if Mark pitted and Sterling didn't in this pre-wave around era). But nothing of the sort happened. Can't tell if Mark won by 1.2 seconds or 2 seconds though. Incidentally, Ted Musgrave's car was co-sponsored by Freedom Village USA. 24. I know it was a quick caution, but I think they could've at least had time to put fresh right sides on and get back around in line in time to have a shot at getting around Martin. Hard to believe how long Sterling went without winning in good cars for the most part. Especially how many races in his career he was running good. You almost think by the law of averages he would've won by now. 25. For those wondering, TropArtic is a multi-grade motor oil owned and operated by Phillips 66, which was the co-sponsor on the car that Jimmy Hensley began driving at this event following the short stints of Chad Little and Bobby Hillin behind the wheel. 26. QFH posted: 11.14.2020 - 12:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) There were 5 drivers who all decided to run an excessive amount of camber: Earnhardt, Kulwicki, Irvan, Bodine, and someone else (who the broadcast did not name) all 5 of them had rear end trouble before the race was over. 27. possum posted: 11.14.2020 - 7:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @26 - just in case it's not obvious from context, you're speaking of rear wheel camber (you can have too much camber in the front wheels too, with generally disastrous results). In that era rear wheel camber was set by the sophisticated process of beating on the axle tube with a big hammer until the hub was more-or-less at the angle you wanted. The effect of this was that the axle itself was now at an angle to the hub and rear end, and after a while it would strip the splines at one or both ends (usually in the rear end, since that was harder to fix). NASCAR eventually set a limit on the amount of camber allowed, which was small enough to prevent rear-end failures - as I recall they did this less to protect the teams from themselves and more to avoid issues with broken rears dropping oil on the track, since gear lube doesn't soak up into speedy-dry all that well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
