Harry came in for gas with 98 laps to go, while Darrell Waltrip (the then-Gasmaster - see Daytona, 1989) did three laps later. Everyone assumed that Gant would run out of gas and give Waltrip the victory, but it was Waltrip running dry with a lap and a half left, and Gant took the win with maybe 1/2 a gallon left in the tank. 2. He ran out on the backstretch on the last lap and coasted across the finish line. Had he not run out he would have lapped the field for a second consecutive Dover Cup race. Earnhardt would pass the coasting Gant in turns 3 and 4 on the final lap to unlap himself and be the only other driver to finish on the lead lap. 5. The drivers were not fans of that and few crashes in practice (Alan Kulwicki wrecked two cars) did not help. No wonder they went to concrete a few years later. Race affected the early portion of this race, delaying the start over an hour and causing the eventual begining of the race to be under the yellow flag. After another extended caution for rain a few laps after they went green the skies eventually cleared. 10. He didn't loose a wheel but pitting to fix the vibration cost him a few laps. Greg Sacks ran as high as second in this one before fading out of contention using the same off-cycle strategy as Rudd. Richard Petty also ran near the front early with the same approach. Andy Belmont debuted his new FDP Brakes sponsorship. His T-Bird got a slick teal paint job as part of the deal but a blown engine quickly got him black flagged and sent to the sidelines. 11. Rookie Jimmy Hensley was the highest finishing Ford in 8th. 12. Josh posted: 04.06.2018 - 2:38 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Mike Joy mentioned during the broadcast that the #85 driven by D.K. Ulrich was Bobby Gerhart's car and the reason D.K. was behind the wheel was that Gerhart didn't put in any practice time. It also looks like by the broadcast that the #85 was a Chevrolet, not an Olds. The pace car was going faster than usual during the rain cautions, causing Wally Dallenbach and Terry Labonte to lose laps in the pits during normal four-tire and refueling pit stops during the second caution for rain. NASCAR gave each of them their laps back since the pace car was going at a faster than usual pace due to the moist conditions at that time. Felix Sabates had some harsh words for Dave Marcis after some on-track miscommunication between him and Kyle Petty led to Petty taking two hard impacts; one to the outside wall and the other to the inside retaining wall on the frontstretch. Kyle was more gracious to Dave in his interview. Derrike Cope hit the inside wall so hard in his crash with Dallenbach that it bent the boilerplate and repairs had to be made to it, which led to the 37-lap caution period. Earnhardt must have been bored during the Cope/Wally caution because he got up and traded some paint with Elmo Langley's pace car. 13.
