I think the "10" car was destroyed during his horrendous tumble at Pocono the following month. 4. Foyt took some laps in Earnhardts back-up car. 5. RaceFanX posted: 12.23.2017 - 10:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It was a good weekend for the Allison family. In addition to Davey Allison's win here his brother Clifford Allison finished second in the undercard ARCA race. Chargin' Charlie Glotzbach's 16th place finish was the best of his brief NASCAR comeback during the early 1990s. This was his last non-place race and the third-to-last race of his Cup career. 21. RaceFanX posted: 12.23.2017 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor: #31 Bobby Hillin, Jr.- Team Ireland / Maxx Race Cards Hillin and Martin Birrane's Team Ireland had a Richard Childress Racing-prepped car for this race and the RCR qualifying engine they got to use was a hot one that placed him fifth on the grid at the start. Ernie Irvan moved from sixth to second early only to get loose and get the outside wall hard off turn 2 on the third lap while trailing only Alan Kulwicki after passing Davey Allison. A few other cars spun behind him as the day's first caution came out. Irvan's Kodak #4 would be repaired but any chance of a good finish was gone. 22. Josh posted: 04.12.2018 - 2:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Davey got loose in Turn 2 and clearly clipped Ernie to send Ernie into the Turn 2 wall. Gant, Labonte, Marlin, and perhaps others spun behind Irvan. Irvan got back out and finished the race later in his damaged Kodak Chevy. Harry Gant got up in the gray stuff and got loose, but did a great job to save the car, keeping it off the wall and pirouetting harmlessly around in the highest groove. Ted Musgrave was running fourth on the lead lap with 5 to go, behind only Allison, Waltrip, and Kulwicki, when he had to come down pit road for a splash of fuel. This dropped Musgrave down to 8th, one lap down. Alan Kulwicki looked like he would/could get by Darrell Waltrip during the final 15-20 laps of the race, but Waltrip held him off for 2nd. This was the last time James Hylton was running at the finish of a Cup race. His sponsor should be listed as Valtrol Steam Traps, same as the two Pocono races and the Talladega and Michigan DNQs. 23. Ben Hess would take over Michael's back-up car the next day while he was in the hospital only for him to wreck the back-up car in second round qualifying 25. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.24.2019 - 5:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @14 Jimmy Spencer qualified 3rd and won the Busch Series race that was the day before this race. He won that race in spectacular Mr. Excitement fashion after going 3 laps down after his car stuck in gear and he had to pit under green to get it fixed. The race was televised on TNN and Buddy Baker did the race as the analyst in a 2 man booth that day. Jimmy's concentration was probably on the Busch ride he had just secured a couple weeks earlier for the remainder of the 92 season instead of a Cup team that closed its doors already is my guess. Buddy Baker had to have had production meetings and whatnot and it was his job to do homework by hanging around the garage that weekend to talk to the Busch teams for broadcast material. Myrtle Beach and Michigan aren't close. How did either of them have time to be at Michigan for practice and qualifying and also be in Myrtle Beach for practice and qualifying and tv prep? 26. possum posted: 01.24.2019 - 6:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 - as I recall, Baker had his own plane. So Cup quals on Friday, fly to Myrtle Beach for Busch on Saturday, fly back to Michigan for the Cup race on Sunday doesn't seem too bad. If I remember correctly, back then the BGN ran one-day shows at the short tracks, qualifying around lunchtime and racing later in the day, so there'd be no need to be in Myrtle Beach on Friday. Dunno how Spencer did it, unless he hitched a ride with Baker. 27. By all rights he should have finished at least 3 laps down. But he drove that car until its tongue was hanging out. He showed everybody he was the real deal. 28. It's visible during the race when Terry Labonte was making his way through the field after an early wreck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
