Felix Sabates bought the ride for Joe Nemechek, who did not qualify. Even though Sabates name is listed in the results, its actually Barkdoll's car (note the #73) 5. Marlin was booed for his effort, and it looked like he "let" Richard take the lead on the first lap. However, he tried valiantly to take the lead back, but Petty would hold him off for the first 5 laps of the race. 7. myself posted: 02.13.2007 - 8:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Eric C is incorrect. Ole' Richard had the first few laps "gift wrapped" for him while the rest of the field stayed double-file behind him. President Bush was in attendance for this one. 8. In the end, Sterling only led two laps and once again finished second to Irvin at Daytona. 9. One of the loudest things I've ever heard. I'd bet every single fan in those stands was booing. 10. myself posted: 03.15.2007 - 7:09 pm Rate this comment: (3) (7) I wasn't booing. Former Rookie of the Year Ken Bouchard attempted to qualify one of Barkdoll's patented #73 cars for the '99 500, but failed to make the show. 12. He was one of the car running the high side and it really worked well for him. He had two things working against him. He got caught up behind Davey Allison one time and Davey was running the same line but was not as fast so it held Bill up. The other thing is he started 20th and was not great on fresh tires. So he lost some time when he got new tires. As fate would have it after hardly any cautions they yellow flew and Elliott couldn't move through the pack as good when the cars were spread out. 13. At Sonoma he jumped the start, and he got caught a lap down when he cut a tire at Talladega. 15. jr88fan posted: 08.13.2009 - 11:05 am Rate this comment: (2) (1) I wasn't booing. Anyway, something else I noticed here...Kyle Petty is 13th in the points after this race. He manages to claw his way back into the title hunt, and was still alive heading into Atlanta at the end of the season. Pretty remarkable when you think about it. 22. I remember listenting to this race on the radio and hearing President Bush interviewed talking with Bill Elliott and Richard Petty. Richard Petty turned 55 years old two days before this race. 24. sk posted: 04.14.2013 - 9:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) So the story about Petty's finish goes: temperatures on this muggy summer day in Florida hovered around 95º in the air and 130º on the track, and by mid-race the aging Petty found himself overcome by the heat. Crew members of the #43 sought out Dale Earnhardt and Jimmy Means as potential relief drivers, but when they failed to locate either, they wound up bringing in Eddie Bierschwale, who himself had parked after suffering burns on his feet earlier in the event. Though Petty pulled in from 19th place to execute the driver change and seek fluids, Bierschwale's own battle wounds may have led to the parking of the STP Pontiac only a handful of laps later. 25. Earnhardt was a bit taller and bigger than the King and the driver's seat in Richard's car was not a fit for Dale. Eddie B. did end up driving the car but by that time they were two laps down. It would have been incredible to have seen Dale work his Daytona magic in the King's 43 but it was not to be. 26. wrank fakefield posted: 03.03.2014 - 7:11 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Richard Petty is 6'2." Dale Earnhardt 6'1." Being there and paying attention are two different things. The FACTS are, they initially wanted Buddy Baker, a longtime friend of the Pettys, but the seat was too narrow for him. they couldn't find Earnhardt or Means to substitute for the King, so they got Bierschwale. I was a childhood Pwrry fan, but there were so many races the last few years of his career in which he needed a relief driver that i was glad he was finally going to retire. 27. Schroeder51 posted: 12.05.2015 - 10:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The big wreck late in the race was triggered when Morgan Shepherd got loose in a pack of cars coming off the second corner, lost control of his car, and slid back up the track right in front of Bobby Hamilton and Alan Kulwicki. Hamilton hit Shepherd's car so hard it knocked the hood off the #68. Stanley Smith and Ted Musgrave took evasive action to try to avoid the spinning cars, and while Smith lost control of his #49 and ended up impacting the dirt embankment of Lake Lloyd, Musgrave was able to skid his car through the grass and avoid any contact. Derrike Cope and Dick Trickle also tangled behind the chaos when the #8 rear-ended the #10 as they were slowing down. 28. It just might be possible that he would've been able to stay up front and at least get a top 5 in his last race at Daytona and who knows if everything worked out right he may have even won the race. 29. It's like the story Dale Jr told about the time he relief drove in his Cup career for Kyle Busch. He couldn't fit in the seat because Kyle was so skinny but he did it anyway. He was sitting in kind of sideways and said it likely wasn't safe but he was curious how a Hendrick engine would feel compared to a DEI engine so he did it. 31.
