You could see his car tumbling over the campers in the infield. It got very quiet at the track after the crash too, it was pretty scary. Fortunately he wasn't hurt badly, though I think he broke his wrist. Darrell Waltrip won the race, and he was pretty upset in victory lane because he got into the back of Davey to start that crash. I remember that he wanted to know if Davey was ok more than anything else. 2. Chicago posted: 05.01.2005 - 6:15 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It was a racing incident more than anything else. They were four-wide going down the backstretch; Davey and Darrell tangled, and Davey spun into the grass at just the right angle. It shouldn't have happened, but it did. 3. nascarman posted: 06.13.2006 - 12:07 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) First top 5 for Musgrave. 4. Blocking half way across the track tends to not be a good idea. Darrell took a lot of crap from the Allison's, expecially Davey. Darrell had position on Davey and decided not to go down the track any further. Good for him :) 10. Chris posted: 11.15.2007 - 3:38 am Rate this comment: (1) (3) Exactly right, cArmAkAze. DW took the most crap from Bobby Allison, which is certainly not unexpected. Bobby said something like, "I don't think Darrell went into that corner intending to crash Davey. I do think that the further they went on, the more Darrell thought that Davey needed to take a ride." I know Bobby Allison is beloved by most, but sometimes he said stupid things and that was one time where he put both feet firmly into his mouth. 11. Steve posted: 12.08.2007 - 6:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (3) How was that "typical" of Darrell? When has he ever tried to wreck someone to kill them? And Davey was "driving like a moron"? Where's your respect for the dead? Kinda funny that Jimmy Hensley finished 14th and didn't even collect 10 grand for it. 12. Bobby Allison was just upset because he thought DW was trying to "rough up the young driver" and took offense. You could tell DW was very upset about that though. Just a racing incident. 14. I sat in the infield, and being 3 years old, all I remember is seeing Davey's car go up and over and then we lost sight of it. Everyone on the truck with me thought he didn't live through it when we saw the car on the flat-bed. But then I heard him give an inteview on MRN Radio. Poor guy, never could catch a break. 20. Davey went through so many injuries and broken bones that year, its unbelievable that he was able to walk away from those crashes. Unfortunately it was the helicopter crash he was not able to walk away from. 31. I believe this was the crash that had Bobby's wife/Davey's mom asking Bobby, "are you having fun yet?" She didn't want her boys racing. She must've of had a hunch because both of them were killed at/on a racetrack. 32. wrank fakefield posted: 03.08.2014 - 5:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bobby Allison's comments go back to the feud waltrip and allison had 81-83. Particularly 81 and 82, when allison had a lead halfway through both years only to lose the championship in the second half of both seasons to Waltrip. It rubbed him raw, and he could never let it go despite beating waltrip and everyone else for the title in 83, as he was convinced that the only reason that DW and Junior Johnson beat him the previous two seasons was because of nascar-sanctioned cheating (no one ever beat Bobby Allison, he either won or someone cheated him). As great a driver as he was, and make no mistake he might have been the best ever had he not been so hard to get along with, Bobby Allison could be very small and petty. 33. b4il3y posted: 11.16.2014 - 3:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 8. myself posted: 05.17.2007 - 5:10 pm Rate this comment: Like this comment (2) Dislike this comment (3) Typcial. Does anyone have further information or clarification on this? Mike Potter's #77 was a Buick, not a Chevrolet. Jerry O'Neil's #65 was a Chevrolet, not an Olds, unsponsored yellow car. 38. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.24.2019 - 9:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I saw something a while back, don't remember where, about Darrell Waltrip's longtime crew chief Jeff Hammond leaving after this race because of that accident. I see it's true he left and that after this race "Suitcase" Jake Elder took over as DW's crew chief for the remainder of this season. Is that really the reason or did Hammond already know that he was going to leave to be the crew chief on the 2nd Felix Sabates team being formed with Kenny Wallace as the driver for 1993? It seems as I watch through these old seasons, crew chiefs that are leaving to be a part of a brand new team the following year started to leave earlier and earlier from their current team to start to work on forming the new one. For example a couple weeks before this in 92 Busch Series season, Ray Evernham left as crew chief on Jeff Gordon's Bill Davis owned team to help form a 3rd Cup team with Hendrick for Gordon and Keith Simmons took over as crew chief for the rest of the Busch season. At least that is the reason they gave for the switch. Coincidence or what for Hammond leaving DW after this race? 39. Anonymous posted: 01.25.2019 - 7:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Darrell actually fired Jeff Hammond. He thought that Hammond wasn't putting 100% effort into his job and was taking advantage of having Darrell as the team owner and boss. He wrote this in his book "DW". Sabates must have hired him some time after that happened. They must have made up later since Hammond rejoined Darrell in 1997. 40. Turn4 posted: 09.09.2019 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wonder how Davey Allison's flip at Pocono in 1992 compares to Maynard Troyer's flip at Daytona in 1971 and Rusty Wallaces flips at Daytona and Talladgea in 1993 since Allison's car flipped numerous times rapidly before coming to a stop. Also the injuries Davey Allison received from the crash is similar to injuries Ricky Rudd suffered after his crash at Daytona during the Busch Clash in 1984 (the face swelling up to the point that the eyes were swollen shut). 42.
