Oh wait, Jr. isn't in them, so you wouldn't like them. RP racing was A LOT better back then than it is today. 9. This was also, I'm pretty sure, the only time #68 Tri-Star Motorsports team used a Chevrolet, as they were an Olds team before switching to Ford in 1992. They may have used a Chevy at the Plate tracks, as I seem to recall seeing it wrecked on one of the 200+ tapes I have. I may be wrong on the only part though. 12. All with the same green and white paint scheme, with Masters Inn sponsorship, until at least 1995. 14. Chris posted: 11.15.2007 - 3:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Long green flag runs were what strung the field out. Nowadays, Nascar would find some debris and throw the caution if they go too long on green flag runs. 15. Roger posted: 02.20.2008 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is where Tim Brewer's fuel stretch got him in trouble. Elliott was staying out by himself way past the other drivers and losing a ton of time to new tires. Elliott paid dearly by going 1 lap down even though he finished fifth. 16. stricklinfan82 posted: 04.21.2008 - 5:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Incredible comeback for Ernie Irvan in this race. Ernie cut down a tire in the first 5 laps and a caution came out as he was exiting pit road. He broke the speed limit trying to beat the leaders to the finish line and avoid going a lap down and failed. Starting at the tail end of the line for the violation, he passed every car in the field under green to move back to the tail-end of the lead lap. The race's only other caution allowed him to catch up to the back of the field for the restart and he duplicated the same feat again - passing every car in the field without a yellow to take the lead. This was one of those rare races where three superior cars - the 4, 22, and 28 - were able to hook up in a 3-car draft on a long green flag run and pull away from the rest of the field and ultimately end up lapping all of them. 17. myself posted: 08.26.2009 - 2:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (3) Had a healthy Davey been in the 28, he'd have won this race. This was during the time when there was a rumor controversy that he and Childress' daughter had an affair. The team only won one race that year - Charlotte 600. I actually saw Earnhardt fans leave the race when he blew up way before the race was over. 21. Hillin likely had the best chance to beat Irvan but he got out of the pits too slow on the final green flag stop and lost the draft. 28. Bramblegrunt posted: 09.16.2016 - 12:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The two main stories of the race were of course Ernie Irvan showing plate dominance and Bobby Hillins great ride through the field after replacing the injured Davey Allison What was totally lost was that Stanley Smith was running as high as 3rd in this race and got virtually no coverage, he was running right up there with the leaders for a long time before running out of fuel and shuffled back. Smith would hope to repeat this strength in the following year's race here but would end up in a near fatal crash that by in large ended his racing career And to answer Billy Kingsley's post #11 here, Bobby Hamilton's Olds was indeed totaled in the Pepsi 400 when Morgan Shepherd broke loose in front of him and then Hamilton spun and t-boned him starting a 8-10 car pileup on the backstretch. This race ended up a LOT cleaner as there were no significant impacts with the wall. 29. RaceFanX posted: 10.29.2018 - 1:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Typically a DC listing indicts a driver practiced or qualified a car but another driver raced it. Usually a relief driver situation wouldn't fall under that but in a preplanned change like this it is possible that Hillin would have practiced and/or qualified it to get ready. We may need more research. 32. GoPM21 posted: 10.29.2018 - 7:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @30 Hillin was a relief driver. That doesn't constitute a driver change. 33. Joshua posted: 11.30.2018 - 11:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 28 Stanley Smith was actually just a few feet from getting his lap back when Ernie Irvan did. Ernie passed leader Dale Jarrett just before the line and Stanley Smith tried to follow Ernie but couldn't beat DJ to the line. Stan followed Ernie down the backstretch thinking he had beaten DJ to the line I guess, but NASCAR put the black flag out for Stan and put him back a lap down where he should have been. 34.
