Lennie Pond and Mike Alexander shared the driving duties in the Marcis owned #71 that year. 6. I believe so, because I remember watching highlights of this race on some show (probably RPM 2 Night) and he was psyched during the victory lane interview. He said he drove his heart out for his newborn daughter Sarah (If any of you know, his oldest was born in 1987, and he won the first race after her birth). Gotta love D.W. 7. It sits next to Tony Stewart's 2005 Brickyard 400 winning car, the Brickyard 400 Trophy and an early 1990s Benetton F1 car used by Michael Schumacher 11. Also last win for DarWal Motorsports until David Ruetimann's win at Nashville in the trucks. * Davey Allison, then the points leader crashed in this race, which was a myriad of struggles for the talented driver and tightened things up in the Quest For The Cup. * Sterling Marlin spun twice in the early laps, this concrete took a while to figure out for some. * This race did appear on ESPN Classic once in a great while, remember watching it on there in the year 2003. 12. ericthenau posted: 10.24.2012 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Er... Evan, I'd assume you'd have said this was DW's penultimate win in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series... Everything else you posted seems correct, however. 13. ericthenau posted: 10.24.2012 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also Evan, DarWal Motorsports and DW also won the very next race too, at the 1992 Mountain Dew Southern 500. Or I think you'd say this was DW's last Bristol win, which happened in this race. 14. I forgot he had a two race winning streak so I guess having the baby did do something for ol' DW. 15. myself posted: 05.21.2013 - 12:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Having the baby?! 16. What I meant was becoming a father must have meant something DW. 17. Ben posted: 03.02.2015 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's hard to believe that this was DW's second to last win. I sure wish his career would have ended on a high note rather than a whimper. 18. Elliottfan9 posted: 05.19.2015 - 11:24 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also Jake Elder's first win since 1986. DarWal was pretty good until he went to his own engine program. Early in DarWal's existence the team used Hendrick engines and Darrell wanted to use his own stuff but that was ultimately the beginning of the end for the team. 19. This is where Martin sustained his crash damage. 21. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 10.23.2017 - 7:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) The first Bristol race on concrete after numerous repave jobs in recent years had proven unsatisfactory, it was a pretty eventful race. Polesitter Ernie Irvan crashed all on his own on the backstretch just a handful of laps into the race when he broke loose off the second corner and impacted the inside wall. The McClure crew initially thought it'd be a quick repair job, but when they checked the car more thoroughly, they discovered the #4 had a bent tie rod and rear suspension damage, so Ernie had to go to the garage. He spent about 160 laps there before rejoining the race and managed to gain 4 spots before ultimately pulling back into the garage for good. Shortly after the restart Sterling Marlin also spun his own off the second corner, but managed to avoid the inside wall. He lost a lap in the process, though, and as he was trying to let faster cars pass him to the outside broke loose entering turn 1 under Dale Jarrett. Jarrett slapped the outside wall while Marlin went around completely, and Kyle Petty also spun after light contact with Morgan Shepherd and lightly contacted the #22. Right after the 100 lap mark, Dave Marcis, in his first race driving for the Hedrick team, backed it into the wall in turn 1, ending his night. Terry Labonte had moved up into the top 10 from his 18th starting spot, but dropped out soon afterwards when his engine let go. Mark Martin had a fast car but pitted under one of the earlier cautions which put him towards the back of the field. He managed to charge his way all the way back to the front, surviving a scare in the process when he made contact with Dick Trickle battling for a top 5 spot, sending the Snickers Ford into the backstretch wall but not bringing out a yellow (ESPN's coverage was onboard Trickle's car at the time as they were showing his onboard telemetry). Martin charged his way to the lead past DW just before the caution came out for the fourth time when DJ spun again in turn 2 in front of the leaders. DW reclaimed the top spot in the pits. Davey Allison had a great night going up to that point as he'd led the race for 11 laps earlier and was holding down 3rd place after the restart when his car broke loose in the third turn and backed it hard into the outside wall. Sterling Marlin also went spinning in the aftermath. Davey's car was severely damaged, and he spent more than 60 laps in the garage working on it. He rejoined the race only to find trouble again shortly after returning when trying to get out of the way of faster cars, including the Bodine brothers, he spun again off the fourth corner and nosed it hard into the inside wall, ending his night. Ned Jarrett initially thought from the camera angle they showed when the second crash happened that Brett Bodine might have tapped Davey and spun him out, but replays showed that Brett never touched him and Davey just simply lost it off the corner all on his own. Indeed, in his interview after the second crash, Davey said he clipped the apron off the fourth turn trying to move over out of the way and lost control. It was a bad night for points contenders in generals-Harry Gant led the race, but backed it hard into the fourth turn wall after contact shortly after the restart from Davey's second crash. Mark Martin, who was running 3rd, promptly crashed in between turns 1 and 2 after contact with Alan Kulwicki. Mark backed it in hard, and Kyle Petty clipped him as he slid back down the track, taking most of the front bumper off the Valvoline Ford. Mark took responsibility for the accident in his interview-Alan had gotten a nose under him but evidently Mark thought he was clear. Both cars did rejoin the race, but retired after being unable to gain any more spots. The only two frontrunners in the points standings to have good nights were Kulwicki and points leader Bill Elliott. Kulwicki spun after the contact with Martin, but received no damage, changed tires and fueled up his car to the finish under the yellow, and managed to walk away with a fifth place finish. Elliott was never a factor in this race at all, but had a nice, quiet, uneventful evening and managed to come home sixth, and ended up padding his points lead over Davey by a considerable amount. The race went green the final 153 laps and that ended up costing Ricky Rudd and Geoff Bodine, who ran 2nd and 3rd for much of the final run. They had pitted under the caution for Ted Musgrave's accident, while DW, Earnhardt, and others had pitted under the second Davey caution or the Gant caution-leaving them short on fuel to the end. Rudd and Bodine both had to stop for splashes of fuel in the final 15 laps. Bodine actually leapfrogged Rudd in the pits, but wound up having to come back to pit road again before the race was over when a tire went down, dropping him out of the top 10. There were some concerns the leaders might not have enough to make it to the finish (in particular, the broadcast team were concerned about Earnhardt as he was not particularly well known for being great in fuel mileage situations), but they all made it to the end, with DW scoring the penultimate triumph of his career just days after his daughter Sarah had been born. Earnhardt came home 2nd, a particularly hard fought second because earlier in the race he had simultaneously both lost power steering and had the alternator go bad. The RCR crew was able to restore Dale's power steering under a caution flag, but couldn't fix the alternator problem leaving the Intimidator to run off the battery for the rest of the night. Fortunately for him, it had enough juice left in it for him to go the distance. 22. When Hurricane Andrew thundered into Florida it especially hammered the seaside city of Homestead. Part of the recovery effort to rebuild the city after the storm included partnering with the late Miami Grand Prix promoter Ralph Sanchez to construct a permanent race track as part of Homestead's effort to show the world it was rising back up from the ashes...That track became Homestead Miami Speedway, home to NASCAR's annual season finale. The groundbreaking for the track took place one year to the day after the hurricane. 25. I'm very surprised they didn't mention one time that this win tied DW for 4th on the all time wins list with Cale. (at the time) 26.
