But we all know what happened down the stretch. He surged back and won the darn thing. 2. Steve posted: 05.23.2006 - 9:10 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Ricky Rudd's only win of the 1992 season. I may be wrong, I'm pretty sure this was the last Winston Cup race featuring a Buick. Mike Potter started 28th and finished 25th in a #77 Buick Regal owned by Steve Balogh. He was the last car running, 118 laps down. Graham Taylor made his second of 3 starts in a second Jimmy Means car (#53). His 35th place start and 36th place finish in this 1992 Peak Antifreeze 500 are his best. 3. Rudd got 2 tires, and Elliott ran out of laps to catch him. The call cost Elliott 5 points toward the championship, and the race win. 4. Not just because he lsot the 5 points, but I think Junior damaged this team by overriding the crew cheif and costing them the race win. 6. Since then there have been either 3 or 4 makes as Olds dropped out, then Dodge entered, then Pontiac dropped out, then Toyota entered, and finally Dodge dropped out again. It's possible but unlikely that 5 makes would participate in Cup again as it would take Dodge and one other manufacturer to enter. 12. Josh posted: 07.04.2018 - 6:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Alan Kulwicki made contact with Chad Little heading into Turn 3 and Alan's car looped around quickly and the left front impacted the wall and two-wheeled the car around causing the left rear to impact the wall as well. Alan said in his TV interview that he thought this might be it for the championship; little did anyone including evidently himself know what was going to happen over the final few races. Dale Earnhardt was a lap down midway through the race and conveniently spun Geoff Bodine in front of the leaders, and the whole field for that matter, to cause a caution and get back on the lead lap. This caution sparked a succession of crash-induced cautions, causing Ken Schrader (who was being relieved by Sterling Marlin after Schrader's early crash into the Turn 2 wall caused fumes to enter the car and made him woozy), Chad Little, Richard Petty, and Dick Trickle all to retire from the race after decent runs. Poetic justice was served though, as Earnhardt was caught up in an incident with Rusty Wallace, Ernie Irvan, and Brett Bodine several laps later. After the green on lap 296, the race ran green the rest of the way. During the final round of pit stops with around 20 to go, Bill Elliott pitted one lap before Ricky Rudd. Elliott took on four tires and fuel as noted above, while Rudd pitted one lap later and took on fuel only. Had Rudd pitted first, would they still have taken on fuel only? If Bill had only taken two tires, would he have been able to catch and pass Rudd? We'll never know, but in hindsight this didn't affect the championship as Bill would have only gained 5 points with the win and he lost the title by 10. 14.
