The owner Martin Birrane was enraged because he had purchased the engine from RCR and when his appeal to NASCAR was dropped he abruptly pulled out of the sport because he didn't want to be viewed as a cheater. 4. biffle16 posted: 01.20.2007 - 2:05 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) First race after I was born. Kind of like Sterling's car in the 1995 Super Speedway races, it was real high pitched. 6. Stricklin was used primarily as a research and development driver in this race and parked the car to to try and help Bill Elliott after he continued his late season choke-job. It simply boggles the mind how good the Jr. Johnson team was so early in the year to the disaster they were late in the year. This was pretty much the last stand for the Junior Johnson team they never got close to anymore championship success and Tim Brewer eventually got canned after Elliott's epic chokejob, Mike Beam would replace him. 23. billy posted: 05.15.2014 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (3) (6) Bill Elliott's Slay Bar Broke after 310 laps Finish 30th. 24. I know they ran a Ford on the plate tracks earlier in the year because they felt it was better aerodynamically than the Olds. I'm curious if they decided to test a Chevy to see how it would compete in anticipation of Olds dropping out of the sport in 1993. 27. Scott B posted: 05.18.2016 - 10:09 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Yes, Hagan's team was beginning their transition to Chevy, they also ran one for the season closer at Atlanta in preparation for 1993. His team switched manufacturers frequently looking for any kind of advantage, especially in the years when they were running GM engines and could just run different sheet metal. 28. Ben Gunby posted: 05.10.2017 - 3:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Elliott is the driver. He's not the one choking when shit breaks. 29. Sean posted: 05.10.2017 - 6:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Well, there are people who say that Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Geoff Bodine, and Buddy Baker's parts failures resulted from how hard they drove, so there is an argument that if you drive too hard leading to failures, you are choking. However, Elliott was a conservative driver and those guys were not, so I agree with you in his case. 30. Roger posted: 08.23.2018 - 5:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If something broke on Dale Sr., it was a choke job, but not Bill Elliott. He was as smooth and conservative as they came. In fact, most of these "choke juobs' were part failures or engine failures. Remember Junior was too busy cheating on Flossy to let it bother him too much. Then he was dumb enough to fire Brewer and separate Bill from him. It killed Bill's 1993 and 1994 though he recovered enough to win the 94 Southern 500. 31. Ryan posted: 08.23.2018 - 6:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Elliott wasn't an aggressive driver when it came to rubbing fenders and had a conservative approach for that, however, he was hard on his equipment with Melling and Junior. That's the truth. People can try to slice or spin it however they want, but the fact of the matter is Elliott and his team choked away the 1992 championship and so did Davey Allison. Alan Kulwicki seized the moment. I agree with @22 @29 Michael's 1992 Indy 500 loss is a great example. He had a huge lead on Al Jr. He just stayed on it and didn't have to. 32. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.29.2019 - 3:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (4) They disqualified Hillen to try and help Bill too. It would've been more marketable to have Bill Elliott or Davey Allison win the championship than to have Harry Gant or Alan Kulwicki win it so it was hail marys all the way trying to do everything in their power to help. Down the road they felt bad about Birrane dropping out of the sport so they made him the owner of Lola Cars, one of the top race car manufacturers in the world. Earnhardt also wanted Alan or Harry to win so he tried just hard enough to position his finish accordingly down the stretch. He was that good. Humpy was good friends with Dale and they found out some things that irritated Bill and Davey. Bill didn't like the song Auld Lang Syne, so much so that he never went to New Years Eve Partys, still to this day. Davey hated hearing the country group Diamond Rio. So they got together and hired Diamond Rio to sing Auld Lang Syne under the guise that they were just doing it to pay tribute to Richard Petty on his last run at Charlotte. It worked like a charm. Bill was so mad he drove the car too hard and Davey spaced out to a 19th place finish trying to forget he was basically just at a Diamond Rio concert. 33. The fact that he was leading the points heading into Atlanta in 1992 was a minor miracle given all the BS he personally and that team dealt with that season. Let's hear about how Dale choked in 1989. 35. Jimnsimforever posted: 01.29.2019 - 3:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Conspiracy theory? My goodness. You didn't read my entire post. They had Diamond Rio actually singing Auld Sang Lyne to Richar..... oh never mind. Read the posts on here and look at all the arguing back and forth. Yes there are facts in here but a bunch of opinions too in these race boards. And some of the things you read here that you think may be facts are indeed incorrect. Jimmy Spencer was originally supposed to get the #90 car in 1993. After successful runs with Bobby Allison, Junie Donlavey said he "wouldn't object" if Spencer wanted out of the deal. Tom Kendall was originally going to be in the #44 for 1993. The ride eventually went to Rick Wilson; Robert Pressley was also considered. NASCAR considered dropping Sears Point for 1994, favoring one of three other tracks instead. https://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-xpm-19921013-1992-10-13-9210130215-story.html 39. The single car team competed in fifteen NASCAR Winston Cup Series events from July 1991 to October 1992, earning no top fives, no top tens, ran at the finish of eleven of the fifteen events and had just two drivers compete in the #31 machine: John Paul Jr. and Bobby Hillin. 40. People forget how great Kyle Petty ran from 1991 through 1993 in that mello yellow pontiac. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
