His finishes including this one at Phoenix: 30, 26, 30, 4, 31. You can't have a run like that to end the season and expect to win the title. He was fortunate enough to still be in the position to win the title going into Atlanta. 7. Roger posted: 07.17.2007 - 6:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Thats a very broad statement concerning Bill. Bill wins the championship if Ernie Irvan doesn't take him out at Daytona. Elliott finished that race in 27th. He only has to gain 10 points in that race to take the championship. To say that one race cost him is a joke. It was nothing he did. Elliott has more than once proving with decent equipment he can do alot. Obviously the car wasn't up to par that day. 8. Rusty Wallace had the dominant car for much of the race until a dead battery foiled his chances for a win. 9. You name it there has been a time for someone. 12. Hendrick basically bought the number from Sam McMahon, not exactly sure if he purchased Team III Racing, but he did take their number for Jeff's team. Bill Eliott had a great season start, owning the month of March but they started struggling a lot and having equipment failures. Junior Johnson's heart never was in it after this year and this was the final year they had a legit shot at title glory. 21. Kulwicki certainly was not as highly regarded then, as evidenced by the voting tally. 24. He was lucky to finish 31st as many contenders fell out with engine failures and crash. Jack Roush did offer some help, but saw the problems were far worse than thought. 27. There was a timely final caution, at least for the 28 camp, when Jeff Davis spun off of Turn 4 and Davey Allison, among a few others, had not stopped yet. Mark Martin had taken two tires and looked to be sitting pretty had the race finished green, nursing a significant lead. Mark, still on the lead lap when the caution flag flew, came back down pit road during the caution and got four fresh ones, but only was able to come back up to second. Davey of course won the race, setting up the epic finale at Atlanta two weeks after this one. 30. (the number to call in was 800 so it was free to vote) And Davey Allison won that one too with 27% of the vote, Elliott was 2nd with around 19%, Martin I think was 3rd and Petty 4th, cant remember their percentages. Alan Kulwicki and Harry Gant were tied for last though. Reading through these posts I have read on this site makes me surprised that Kulwicki was the one according to 2 polls on consecutive weeks that the fans wanted to win the least of all of them. The reason they did the poll they said was to remind people to vote in the 92 election. 31. The race was later red flagged and Ron Hornaday Jr got out of his car and pushed it across the finish line. He locked up the 92 Nascar Featherlite Southwest Series championship after finishing 2nd in it the previous two years and would go on to repeat in that series as champ in 1993. 32. By 94 it was over - Bill made some bad career moves - Junior ended up being one of them. 34. possum posted: 09.17.2020 - 6:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @33 - can't really fault Elliott, tho, he had no way to see how things would turn out. For background, Junior had been the lead Chevy team up to the mid 80's, but switched to Ford when it became evident that Childress and Hendrick were getting preferential treatment from Chevy. At Ford Junior figured to be the number 1 team, but when NASCAR required each brand to pick a single cylinder head design, he was frustrated when Ford picked the Yates head. After that Junior kind of lost interest - engine work was his specialty, and NASCAR had effectively banned him from doing it. But of course Elliott had no way of forseeing any of that would happen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
