No one would know it from the last few years, but Morgan Shepard was a force to be reckoned with in his prime, even though he only had 4 wins to show for it. 3. He was working under the hood of the car to to stay warm. Another reason he had done it his way. 10. Rookie Jeff Gordon led a couple of laps in the Daytona 500, but this race was the first in which he led a significant part of the race (16.5%). Morgan Shepherd won 4 Winston Cup races, and 3 of them were at Atlanta. His first win was at Martinsville in 1981, his next came at Atlanta in March of 1986, another win came in the season finale in 1990, and this of course was his final win. 11. Darrell posted: 07.18.2006 - 4:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Back in the day, Shepherd was always driving around in crummy equipment, but managed to make the best of it. Seems as if he's lost that touch. And Joe Ruttman was one of the best truck drivers there was. I still believe he'd be kicking butt in there if someone gave him a ride. 12. Also, not many people can say they have won a Daytona 500 pole; but Loy Allen can. And by the way Morgan Shepherd might be the most underrated driver in NASCAR history. He had four seasons where he finished in the top 10 in points. That's more than most. 15. Steve posted: 12.03.2006 - 1:50 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) A Morgan Shepherd fact: he is the only driver who has raced in NASCAR's top racing series under the name Grand National (3 starts in 1970), Winston Cup (485 starts), and Nextel Cup (25 starts as of 2006). If Dave Marcis had stuck around for two more years he would also have competed in all three eras. It's too bad that Morgan will probably be best remembered as a "field filler". He was a better driver than most people give him credit for. 16. most posted: 12.17.2006 - 9:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree, lets see some of the guys out there do it Morgan style today, Jr. Hamlin Edwards Biffle Busch's. Steve posted: 01.30.2007 - 4:45 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I stand corrected: Joe Ruttman competed at Riverside in January of 1963 and 1964 as a teenager (back in the Grand National days). He also started 216 races under the Winston banner, and then 7 start(and park)s for James Finch's Nextel Cup (lack of) effort in 2004. I don't think anybody else who has competed in the Nextel era is old enough to have competed in the Grand National era (I think the eldest driver besides Shepherd and Ruttman is Ken Schrader, who was only 16 at the debut of Winston as series sponsor). 19. No one remembers the pre-Busch Busch series, but Morgan one at least one National Championship, and something near 200 races in the series. My refrence material is upstairs but IIRC he won 2 titles. Unfortunatly Morgan has always had sub-par equpment, and to this day does, running his own unsponsored cars. (Racing with Jesus is the team, not nessicarily the sponsor, although it's on there for lack of a better sponsor) Morgan even drives his own hauler. 24. Originally ABC was going to cover the race but backed out after it was postponed. TNN was going to cover the Busch race (which was snowed out as well) but after ABC backed out TNN got to cover the Cup race. The Busch race was moved to November and was covered by ESPN. 27. Juicebox posted: 03.25.2009 - 3:41 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Shepherd was forced to win this race using superior fuel mileage despite having a car capable of winning on pure horsepower. A flat tire sent him to the pits while leading, and he spent the rest of the day playing catch-up. Irvan was a nonfactor who also used gas mileage to score a top finish. Wallace, Gordon and Martin had dominated much of the race with Martin having the clearly superior car, but an engine failure capped off the first of many crushing first-half defeats. 28. Anonymous posted: 06.06.2014 - 4:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gordon's race and probable first career win completely fell apart in the last 15 laps as not only did he have to pit for a splash-and-go, he slid over the line when he did so and had to back up before the crew could service the car. He came out of the pits in 3rd place just in from of Rusty Wallace but with 5 laps to go he slammed the wall in between turns 3 and 4 and had to limp to the finish. A should-have-been win and could-have-been 2nd place finish turned into a disappointing 4th. Still not bad for a guy in just his fifth career race. 37. Ivan Balakhonov posted: 03.31.2015 - 4:02 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) This race was another harbinger of Jeff Gordon's greatness. He contended for the victory and could have finished 3rd if not for two costly mistakes late in the race. But most of all I was impressed with him passing Dale Earnhardt on lap 16. Jeff got so close to #3 that Dale almost went sideways and had to correct. To race Intimidator this way was... well very risky. During one of the pit stops owner of #22 Ford driven by Bobby Labonte and at the same time team's jackman Bill Davis was hit in the face by the tire carried by Elton Sawyer (you know who he is now, don't you?). Davis suffered a cut and large hematoma but soon returned to perform his functions. 38. I recall that it happened here at Atlanta in 1970, but that's the only other time I can think of. Maybe the Turkey Day 200 at Savannah? I seem to recall that it was postponed multiple times. Can't remember if it was just rain or snow too. 42. RaceFanX posted: 03.25.2018 - 3:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the last Cup race to be postponed due to snow until the 2018 STP 500 in the spring at Martinsville. That race get hit by a storm that delayed it a day but it was nothing like this. The fact that the south was going to be blasted by the "Storm of the Century" wasn't known until very late in the week this race was originally scheduled and teams had already arrived at the track. They even got qualifying in Friday before the snow moved in Saturday morning. As winds increased to 50 miles per hour snowdrifts actually started forming on the race track making it very apparent the races would be delayed quite a while. Most teams stayed in their hotels away from the track rather than risk the almost impassible roads. As mentioned earlier, Alan Kulwicki and a few members of his crew were about the only ones at the track that day as they worked on the #7 Ford despite snow building up inside the garage area from the storm. Kulwicki actually put his driver's helmet on while he was working on car, likely as a shield from the wind. Sadly this was Kulwicki's penultimate Cup race. 43. Mike Joy and the production team were just completely sure that Gordon was going to win the race and that was all they talked about. Including digging up records to find out if he'd have been the youngest Cup winner at 21, found out some guy in the 50s won at age 20. During all that in the break, Buddy Baker said, the 21 car is gonna win this race. Then a pit reporter breaks in while Mike Joy is so fired up about Gordon getting ready to win in his mind, and says the #4 team is going to try to win or run out of gas trying. And again ole Buddy just says, I'm tellin you that 21 car is gonna win the race. Nobody listened to Buddy at all. And the 21 car won the race and it was too late to really tell the story of 51 year old Shepard winning and the Wood Brothers getting back to victory lane for the first time in a couple years. Spent all their time pumping Gordon and his best equipment in all of Nascar up just like they did the previous two years in Busch when they pumped him and his best car in Busch up while Bobby Labonte, Kenny Wallace, Robert Pressley, Todd Bodine, the Burton brothers, Steve Grissom, all took turns beating him in slower cars for 2 years. 45. When the race was put back a week it now conflicted with his main priority for the year, IMSA GTP with Dan Gurney's Eagle-Toyotas. Greg Sacks was brought in to replace him at Atlanta while PJ raced in the 12 Hours of Sebring, ultimately finishing third after late throttle issues. 50.
