To bad these days the owner/driver is all most gone. 4. Perhaps the more touching tribute was that of Kulwicki's transporter driver, who took a lap in his honor after learning of the tragedy before leaving the track. In a nice touch, the flagman waved the checkered flag over the hauler as it passed the start/finish line. 7. hank posted: 05.22.2006 - 8:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) It seems so strange to not have 43 cars in the field. What happened exactly with the 7 team? I presume they decided not to run the race and then went back to the shop. 8. Jeff posted: 06.11.2006 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Back then they only ran 30-36 cars at the short tracks.Even the bigger tracks only had 38-40 cars, sometimes 42. 43 usually only occured at Sonoma and Phoenix when it was a combined event with Winston West. 9. He had 2 top 5 and 3 top 10 finishes and the other two races he had trouble in while running in the top 10. He would have multiple championships as a car owner/driver, and who knows how many wins by now. He was my favorite driver, and I was so tore up when I heard the news that he died that I didn't watch another race until the fall Charlotte race later that year. It was extremely hard to watch the 7 car racing without Alan as driver. Man, I wish he would have stuck around. 14. Alan died on Friday, so maybe it was just too soon after for the team to continue 15. I find it very sad he died on my birthday. I never got the chance to see him race. 16. Anonymous posted: 09.22.2007 - 11:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I am a different Anonymous, by the way. 17. I'm not buying that Kulwicki would have had multiple championships as an owner/driver. He scored 4,078 points to win in '92, which is the lowest number of points scored by a champion since the Latford system was put in place in 1975. In '89, Rusty scored 4,176 and DW scored 4,292 in 1985, but DW's was in 28 races. In every other year through '03 (last year w/o the Chase), Alan wouldn't have come within 400 points of any other champion. As great as Alan's championship was, it was more due to terrible finishes by the 11 and 28 than it was to brilliant driving by AK. More wins for Alan? Absolutely. No question. More championships? Probably not. 21. RaceFanX posted: 01.22.2008 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Find a better place to park... Hooters wanted their ARCA driver Loy Allen Jr. to get the ride and immediately left Kulwicki Racing when Felix turned down their demand. 24. Juicebox posted: 03.25.2009 - 3:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty begins his short track dominace in 1993 by clobbering the field in this race. Earnhardt ran in the top 5 all day before settling for second and Kyle Petty used a timely four tire change late in the going to nab third. This race sported 17 cautions including a wreck between Dale Jarrett and Bobby Hillin that ended with Jarrett's helmet flying across the track. Ricky Rudd and Brett Bodine also had an altercation that nearly caused Rudd to slide into a passenger car in the infield. 26. 18fan posted: 11.04.2009 - 12:00 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Earnhardt had a chance to catch Rusty, but Jeff Gordon crashed with 20 laps to go and Dale's car took too long to get going to make a charge at Rusty. 27. fannie l davis posted: 04.29.2010 - 5:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) it is always sad to see lengends fall rip alan kulwicki and davey allison btw here is a you tube clip of alan kulwicki's hauler leaving bistol and you may notice the flagman waving the checkered flag ... thx for sharing that info j.kircher 28. fannie l davis posted: 04.29.2010 - 5:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) sorry i forgot to post the link .... so here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o1AKqkBiyo 29. 00andJoe posted: 09.16.2011 - 1:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Failed to qualify: James Hylton (#48), Dave Marcis (#71) 30. A great champion taken away all too early. To the race, Dale Jarrett was not very happy about being spun by Bobby Hillin Jr. and went so far as to throw his helmet and was very critical of Hillin in his postrace interview. This was the second time Hillin the drew the ire of his competitors in 1993, Kyle Petty was pissed at him at Daytona. 31. Not only was he a class act, as well as one of the most dedicated drivers AND mechanics, he was a also an inspiration to anyone who's been told "you can't do it." He's a great example of what every driver should be. What he did with his own race team and the little he had is nothing short of amazing. GodSpeed Alan Kulwicki 32. Walleyewhacker posted: 03.01.2014 - 1:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Alan was such a great interview after winning the 1992 Cup. 1992 was really a strange year, but that is what made it so dramatic. I don't care if Alan's average finish wasn't great. Let's face it, all the top six drivers who had a shot at the Cup at the final race had bad stretches during the year where they failed to score top 10's. Maybe it was because of the new cylinder heads that both the Ford and GM teams had to get used to that caused all the enigne failures. Add to it wild card of Ernie Irvan crashing out Bill Elliott in the first race and Davey in the last race. The fact that Earnhardt and Wallace were non-factors for most of 1992 and were out of contention for the Cup in the second half doesn't diminish the excitement of the years one bit. 33. Rob posted: 10.12.2015 - 3:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) For those wondering why the 7 car did not race there is there is a nice article from the Johnson City Press called Remembering the Day Alan Kulwicki Died (you can Google it to find it) One of the things that it talks about is why the 7 car did not race that weekend and the hauler left Friday. In a nutshell it was due to the fact there was no driver and no owner. The crew could not get a replacement, that has to be done by the owner. Since the 7 car was not going to be able to race that weekend, NASCAR sent them home. 36. Evan posted: 01.02.2016 - 7:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I think the 7 should be listed as withdrawn as well since the owner/driver died and the hauler left the racetrack. I also think the #28 should listed as being withdrawn at the Miller Genuine Draft 500 at Pocono as well, since Yates never attempted to run at Pocono after Davey's death. 38. nascarman posted: 01.02.2016 - 7:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @37 I agree, it was on the entry list expecting to run. 39.
