Davey Allison attempted a daring pass on the final grren flag lap but came up half a car length short. Nascar conveniently changed the rules calling for the pace car to speed up after the front pits opened to mitigate the disadvantage of pitting on the backstretch in leiu of Earnhardt being forced back there do to a bad qualifying run. Geoff Bodine spins out on the first lap for the second week in a row, this time getting turned by Kyle Petty. 9. 18fan posted: 07.03.2010 - 8:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bodine actually spun coming off turn 2 on lap 2, Stricklin beat him down into turn 1 on lap 1. 10. jwdog posted: 06.25.2011 - 12:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the race Jeff Gordon pulled a Cole Trickle and drove into the back of another car in the pits (Hut Stricklin). 11. 18fan posted: 10.10.2011 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the first and only time Davey Allison pitted on the front stretch at Martinsville. In preparation they ran 675 laps with two different cars to get the optimum setup for the race. It paid off as Davey came within half a car length of finally giving the Allison family a Martinsville win. 12. Has it even happened before? 13. myself posted: 04.14.2015 - 12:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mannoroth....you must be new. Names like Yarborough, Petty, Waltrip, & Earnhardt had all done it. 14. Actually the reason for caution was not debris (when watching the tape I grew suspicious immediately, since commentators were completely taken aback and cameramen didn't find anything on the track). Winston Cup Scene newspaper provided the following information: the caution was to allow George Purvis, team member of Stavola Brothers Racing, to leave the infield so he could go to his father who suffered a fatal heart attack. 15. They debut a new one the next week at Talladega and that be used until after the 1997 season ended. 18.
