"THEY COME THRU THE TRI-OVAL, CHECKERED IS WAVING- Ernie Irvan wins and RUSTY SPINS AND GETS AIRBORNE! AND FLIPS WILDLY JUST PAST THE START-FINISH LINE, Very reminiscent of his accident-at Daytona." A two-lap shootout bunched the field together, resulting in a hellacious last lap. Irvan won, as Dale Earnhardt hit Rusty Wallace from behind, sending Wallace flying. He flipped endlessly. In the end, he suffered a broken wrist, and was racing the next week. 2. tailgateking posted: 12.20.2004 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) One of the ugliest superspeedway wrecks ever witnessed. So bad, in fact, Earnhardt actually stopped at the accident site after the race to see if Rusty was alright--so you know it was a bad one. 3. Chicago posted: 06.05.2005 - 5:30 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) The most ferocious fight for the win I think I've ever seen. They were banging like it was a short track. It's really amazing they made it to the checkered -- or even the white. You'd have figured they would've have wiped out earlier than that, with Rusty crowding Martin into the wall and Earnhardt almost riding Irvan down to the apron and Spencer cutting off Wallace and almost wrecking the whole field. The way Rusty hit the lip of the grass when he got airborne ... he hit it just right to send his car flipping over endlessly. There wasn't much left of that car; I thought for sure that I had just seen Rusty Wallace die, but in the end he had a broken wrist, some other minor injuries and was racing the next week, but it significantly affected his championship effort despite a ten win season. 4. On the front stretch it was Irvan,SPENCER,Walace,Earnhardt.Comin to take the checkered,Dale went and gave Rusty a shot in his left rear quater-panel and sent him upside down, flipping wildly. After the race Dale got out of his car to make sure his buddy Rusty was ok.An awsome race that will not soon be forgotten. 11. Irvan passed Earnhardt and Spencer moved into second and Rusty tried to take position on Earnhardt and he got sideways off of Earnhardt's front decklid and was sent airborne and flipping wildly. Wallace suffers a broken wrist, facial cuts, and chipped tooth in the horrific accident. Wallace was later interviewed at the care center in his hospital gown and with a bandage on his forehead. Coming on to the backstretch, Rusty moved up to block Dale, who went to the inside, a move that Rusty blocked, and then to the outside to get alongside Rusty and end up beating him to the caution flag. Another example of how Dale understood the draft better than anyone and why he was a master of Talladega. It's weird that when I first became a fan of NASCAR in 2005, I didn't really have a favorite driver, but started to dislike Jr. because of his enormous popularity(that is just the way I am). For some reason, probably after Richmond Spring 2008, I took out my hatred for Jr. on Dale Sr. After I got over that, I really started to respect Dale and realized that I probably wouldn't have been a fan to begin with without all that he did for the sport. RIP Dale 31. Juicebox posted: 03.25.2009 - 4:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Irvan makes some great moves on the final lap to grab his first win of '93. After a few breathtaking opening laps Earnhardt settled in and dominated the race. Late in the going Earnhardt, Martin and Wallace had pulled away and when the caution flew for rain Earnhardt made a nifty move down the backstretch to grab the lead and apparently win the race...except Nascar decided to red flag the event for a two lap shootout in an unprecedented move. The result was exciting but pure chaos, with lots of blocking and banging that ended with Rusty on his roof. 32. The scoreboard in the infield didn't match what NASCAR had for how many laps to go so Jarrett didn't come in to top off his tank thinking they'd make it without pitting. Well, Makar guessed wrong on the accurate lap count. Jarrett had to stop during the third caution and never had time to make a run at the win, although he did get back to 3rd. 55. Josh posted: 07.07.2016 - 9:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) A few thoughts on this one. 1) While I do love the old races from the early 90s, the rules changes made since then have made the racing more sensible. No reason for lapped cars Rick Wilson, Bobby Hillin, Phil Parsons, et al to be mixing it up with the leaders on the final laps. 2) This was out of control racing for the day. Back then three wide was considered very dangerous and four wide was borderline suicidal. This was before Daytona and Dega were resurfaced so the handling of the cars really was a handful in three wide racing. 3) Earnhardt and Wallace got too far ahead on the final restart and were overtaken by the field. Knowing Dale I believe he was angry he couldn't keep the field blocked and behind him and just took out his frustration on Rusty, then had an "oh s***" moment when he saw how it ended up. I think if Rusty had not gotten airborne Dale would have gone on with his day like nothing had happened. 4) Poor 'ol Mark Martin fell from second to 12th on the final lap. He made it clear he hated RP tracks and this might be one reason why. 56.
