Sterling Marlin lead the most laps but faded once again. Earnhardt started 24th and had moved into the top 10 before pit problems knocked him a lap down. While battling with Marlin to get his lap back, the two got together and Earnhardt spun. No caution was thrown and Earnhardt lost several laps. 17. Not sure if Jimmy Means was involved in the ownership of this (or any other 1993 races) entrant or not. http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=L-8GAAAAIBAJ&sjid=mjMDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3281,4519707&dq=henley-gray&hl=en (see the continuation of the article) 18. evan posted: 05.20.2010 - 10:34 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) you know that Jeff Burton subbed for Hut Stricklin as a relief driver? After Burton crashes on lap 3, he was out of the race and Junior Johnson was looking for a driver to relieve Hut Stricklin because he had food poisoning. Burton drove the car to 25th place finish. 19. DaleSrFanForever posted: 07.12.2011 - 9:53 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The deal with Davey's crash was that the helicopter landed on the pilot's side. Red was on the other side and, thank God, was able recover from his injuries. Plus Red was able to brace himself for impact. Davey was fighting the controls and probably didn't get the chance. I don't think his awful wrecks from '92 contributed to it. From what I hear, his was injured so bad they were gonna pronounce him right there but he was an organ donor. Anyway, it is very sad. Mostly for his family. His brother died just 11 months earlier. Plus he had two very young kids. I hate it for his family so much. I remember hearing the news that he was hanging by a thread and hoping so hard he would be alright eventually. I was only 9, but I still hurt for his family even then. 20. People have survived plane and helicopter crashes. For instance, the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, Whoooooooo!!!!!, survived a plane crash and went on to carve his legacy in the Wrestling industry. 21. David posted: 07.29.2013 - 2:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) People like Patrick are the worst kind of stupid...speaking on things they know nothing about. Plenty of people have survived aircraft crashes, including the man who was in the helicopter with Davey. Steve has a valid theory. Davey got messed up pretty badly in that Pocono wreck. If that never happened, who knows? 22. 83andJoe posted: 09.04.2013 - 8:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) First race for FILMAR Racing. 23. I was only 10 years old & still miss him badly to this day. NASCAR was robbed of a great man the following day :( 24. Thought I'd bring it up since e'rrybody else was talking bout Davey Allison, who I'm still surprised finished third in his last race. Also, I had no idea the helicopter crash was the very next day. 26. James W. I had, after all, seen them in the pre-race ceremonies for the 1993 DieHard 500. 27. myself posted: 04.14.2015 - 12:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I miss him still. :( 28. myself posted: 03.10.2016 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Robbie Allison has taken up racing. He was a bit of a hell raiser through his teen years & got into a good bit of trouble. Once he matured, he decided to give racing a go. I think he's doing late models now. 29. The tickets for this race went on sale in January 1993 and sold out within a day...quite a feat before the rise of the Internet. 31. That helmet and one worn by his later driver Mike Skinner at Atlanta in 2000 during McReynolds later race atop the pit box are two pieces of racing memorabilia that McReynolds has asked his family never sell. 34. They withdrew the following week since Davey passed away and they returned at Talladega. 35. They had suspended him for four races for bypassing his restrictor plate at Daytona the week before. He appealed the decision. According to Gary Nelson, "The best way I can explain what they did was that passages were drilled behind the carburetor, around the restrictor plate and back into the engine. It was very ingenious the way they did it. We just stumbled upon it because people were acting funny and we looked closer". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
