Martin was not pleased with Geoff Bodine after the race who had held Martin up for the last several laps of the race. This was also Lake Speed's last race with Robert Yates. Speed had run in the top ten for most of the night but was spun with less than one hundred laps to go by Rick Mast. 2. Sure enough, Martin had to sit down & fall back against his car to do the interview. I miss ole' Ned being in the booth! 5. biffle16 posted: 04.17.2007 - 9:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I love Mark more than life, but I feel sorry for Rusty. 409 of 500 laps led! Jeff Gordon was relieved by Todd Bodine in this race. I believe Bodine failed to qualify. 9. Despire being 9th in points with a victory, Ernie left after this race to go run for Robert . I never knew Mark won one in a photo finish. It seems like everytime he won, nobody was ever closer than the rear bumper, and when it came down to a photo with him involved he always seemed to lose (Bristol vs Davey, Homestead vs Biffle) 12. jack bauer posted: 08.29.2008 - 1:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This wasnt a photo finish. 13. Terry Labonte drove in relief for his brother Bobby after Terry was wiped out in an early accident. And Jeff Gordon was relieved by Todd Bodine, who failed to qualify for the race. All three rookie candidates needed relief drivers. 16. joey2448 posted: 01.24.2011 - 10:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) post #11 - also, martin lost against harvick in the 2007 daytona 500. that's another one. 17. Wallace totally dominated til the end, and afterwards cited neck fatigue as the reason Martin was able to catch and pass him. Of course, Martin was probably at least as fast as Wallace all night long, jut took him all night to make up lost ground. it was after this race that NASCAR's broadcast partners started making a big deal about Martin's now legendary level of physical fitness. 23. He was pretty much the only car capable of really running with Rusty or Mark that night, passing Rusty for the lead on lap 156. His backstretch pit position hurt him, however, and while running second to Rusty, his car wobbled off the fourth corner while trying to pass a (then) lapped Martin. His car spun down the frontstretch and just caught the very end of the inside wall with the back of his car, seriously damaging it and bringing his hopes for victory to an end. Petty was not the only driver to crash while running second in this race; Ricky Rudd would later lose control coming off the second corner and spin into the inside wall on the backstretch while running in the runner-up position as well. Ernie Irvan was driving a backup car after a crash in qualifying and had to take a provisional to start the race, and things got even worse for him when he lost control off the second corner in the opening laps and smacked the inside wall. Irvan lost a lap in the process, but he ran fairly well the rest of the night; never regaining his lost lap but never losing another one, either. Unfortunately, his last ride in the Morgan McClure Kodak ride would end when his engine failed. Morgan Shepherd ran strongly in this race and ran as high as third late in the event, but he broke an axle on his car late in the going and had to limp home at a slower pace, finishing three laps behind. 24. Rusty closed to less than a car length on Mark at the finish line while Mark was caught in lapped traffic. Regardless, it was enough to convince a 7-year old version of myself that I should be a lifelong fan of auto racing. 26. He was really good at this track. Wonder if something happened during his qualifying run. Should've still had short track ace Dick Trickle in the car and ole Todd could've competed for ROY in the 94 Cup season. 28. Joshua posted: 09.23.2019 - 4:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The big crash early in the race almost certainly happened due to some fluid that was put down on the track. All involved parties went into turn 1 and either looped around (Hamilton) or shot straight toward the Turn 1 wall (Labonte, Spencer, D Waltrip, others). They all ended up mangled together toward the bottom of the track between Turns 1 and 2. DW even said he talked to Schrader about it and noticed fluid on his windshield just before the melee happened. 29. Bobby Hamilton relieved Greg Sacks around 120 laps in the 68 car. Terry Labonte relieved Bobby Labonte past halfway after there were fumes in the 22 car. Todd Bodine relieved Jeff Gordon towards the end of the race in the 24 car. 30. He was also involved in a couple of spins during the weekend and needed a provisional to get in. McClure got a tip from of all people Jack Roush that Ford was trying to woo Ernie to the 28. When they arrived at Bristol, McClure asked Irvan about this and he matter of factly said yes. When reminded he had a contract with Morgan McClure, Irvan stayed that he was control of three things, the gas, the clutch, and the brake pedal, clearly inferring he would make life miserable as long as he stayed with the Kodak team. A realization from McClure that this was headed somewhere bad and a $400,000 check from Irvan ended their relationship before he jumped into the 28 at Darlington. The two did not speak for several years afterwards and it was certainly not a good way for Ernie to thank Morgan McClure Racing for giving him his big break, but in the end, it worked out best for all involved. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
