Mark Martin was going for his fifth straight Cup win in this race, and 8th straight race between Busch and Cup combined. He came up short, finishing sixth. He would still go on to win his next two Busch starts, pulling 5 straight in that series (although they weren't consecutive starts). Near the end of the race Ricky Rudd was coming through the field, about to pass Bill Elliott for 2nd when a caution came out with less than 10 laps to go. Then coming off pit road on the ensuing stops, Dale Earnhardt hit Rudd on his way off pit road, spinning him out and keeping Rudd from being able to battle Rusty for the win. Both cars were damaged but continued on to finish on the lead lap. Nobody was going to pass Rusty anyway, but Rudd had the best chance. 4. 18fan posted: 11.29.2009 - 11:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rudd actually spun Cope. 5. "What do I have to do to gain meaningful ground on Earnhardt? Then Rusty's thinking: "I'll hit another car into his ass next race and take him out and gain points!" 6. I hate to burst your bubble, but you might have a case if Davey wasn't 323 points out of first after Loudon the day before he died. He was 5th in the standings that many points behind Earnhardt. Not taking anything away from Davey at all. I liked him and he was a good driver and was very sad when he died. It hurts the whole racing family when that happened. 1993-1994 were very difficult years because there were so many tragedies. I'm just tired of hearing, "Davey, Ernie, and Richmond would have beat Dale had stuff not happened to them. He would have only won 3-4 titles." BS! Dale was on his way to his 6th title in 1993 no matter what Davey could do. Same thing with Ernie in '94... He was BEHIND Dale in the standings when he had his ill-timed crash. Dale beat Richmond for his 2nd title in '86 and no one was beating Dale in '87. No one. If we want to go there what about 2001? 2002? 2003 maybe? I think Dale would have won three straight to give him 10... So it all works out in a weird way. 8. If he didn't have a DNF from Michigan through Atlanta, I think he would have taken it...but if not, he would have been a close 2nd to Dale, with a chance to win (and falling short) at Atlanta. 9. Midnight would soon become Rusty's favorite car and he won a bunch of races in it. 11. He did a pit stop penalty, did not got a lap down luckily and had to charge his way back up. Martin dominated the first half of the race but Rusty had the best car that night. 12. Rick Benjamin was in the STP pit communication center. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
