Irvan would have won by more but a late caution bunched up the field. 7. RaceFanX posted: 11.26.2007 - 8:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the last race for Jerry O'Neil 8. Another ass whipping would be Jeff Burton's 2000 win at Loundon when he led all 300 laps. Sidenote: (as of 2012) Last time the number 65 was used in a Cup race. The #65 has only been used 94 times in Cup since 1949, making it the least used number in NASCAR Cup racing. 12. It is strange to imagine a time where doing well in ARCA could give you the chance to race in Cup; now an ARCA driver is lucky to run a few truck races if he or she does well. Interesting how times have changed (though I think the ARCA and Cup cars used to be more similar, which would explain a few things). 13. It had to be a cool win for him, Irvan actually worked at this track in 1985 welding seats into the grandstands after he moved east before his NASCAR career took off. 20. I was only 8 and this was my first race, and until I read your comment, i had totally forgotten there was a VERY hard crash on the front stretch during that final practice session. Not sure if its even the same one you are referring to. I do remember Mark Martin was involved, but I had completely forgotten seeing that. Personal side note; My family had originally planned to go to the Mellow Yellow 500 bc it was run on 10/10 which is my bday, but to save money, we went to the All Pro 300 instead to my disappointment. To rub salt in the wound, we were all AVID Ernie Irvan fans, and missed what would have been our only chance to see him win. Starting the next season we made a tradition of going to both the Busch and Cup race that weekend that lasted all the way through 2004 when I joined the Marine Corps. We were sitting right in turn two when he had that GUT WRECHING crash a few years later, and in 98 it looked like he would challenge for the win, but was crashed late by Dick Trickle (it took years for me to get over that, as that was the last time we were to see him race)...... Good memories, with a small dash of heartache. 21. {}{}{}{}{} posted: 08.31.2017 - 3:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Is this the final Cup series race for the Number 65 to start? 22. most1305 posted: 08.31.2017 - 7:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 the only other time I remember a 65 being toyed with is when Haas (before Stewart) tested with a 65 car and nearly ran it in a race, this was probably 2007... 23. rm posted: 11.29.2017 - 10:32 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) To provide further info to 16/20 - that wreck was on his second qualifying lap. Corey posted: 11.30.2017 - 12:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 The last time the 65 ran in any Cup event was in 2000 with Dan Pardus. It was during one of the Gatorade 125's. He failed to qualify for the Daytona 500. It was also used by Steve Seligman in 1996 and Jerry O'Neil in 1994. Like Pardus they, ran the 125's but failed to make the 500. This race is in fact the last points paying race for the 65. 25. Gray Gaulding's Distant Cousin posted: 06.23.2018 - 10:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) H.B. The rest of the field either stood on their time or re-qualified the next day. Geoffrey Bodine's #7 Ford blew an engine as he finished his 2nd lap of qualifying. The #29 and #75 completed the first round of qualifying with no problems. This race marked new aerodynamic rules instituted by NASCAR to slow the cars down. They included reducing spoiler height, adding 2 cowl flaps on the hood, increasing the body height, and increasing front air dam height. Sponsorship/Driver Notes: #55 car's sponsor was USAir/Jasper Engines #71 car's sponsor was L.A. Jones Jeff McClure ran the #58 Chevrolet not #83 YouTube credit to NCMarrk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9oQmmPtsSU 28. After the utter hell that team had gone through earlier in the year with Davey Allison's passing a couple of dominant wins with Ernie at the wheel later in the year had to be a big help. 31. Corey posted: 10.13.2019 - 9:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Still to date the last use of the #65 in a points paying race. #65 is also the least used number in NASCAR Cup competition with 94 starts. It is the only number in NASCAR Cup competition to not break the 100 start threshold. 32.
