Doing more research on Jimmy Means, in 455 Winston Cup starts, Jimmy ran a car numbered 52 all but 8 times! And how ironic is it that the driver that was most famous for the number 52 led a grand total of 52 laps in his career? The best finish of a young Dale Earnhardt Jr's favorite driver was 7th at Talladega in May of 1983, and his best start came at Charlotte in 1987, the result of a one-off deal to drive a Rick Hendrick car. I recently read an article in NA$CAR Illustrated (in a feature called, "Where Are They Now?"), and it says Jimmy is now the spotter for Chad Chaffin at Front Row Motorsports, another underdog team. Unfortunately, a lot of new fans see the name Jimmy Means and think, "Who?" His stats may look pitiful (17 Top 10s in 455 starts), but he was a racer who took what little he had and did the most he could with it. He also led a lap in his first start, and his last start. 4. It looked really strange how high he ran compared to anybody else and be successful. Richard Petty did the same thing because he said if you have a problem, it is not as very far to the wall. Gant had a chance to win both Rockingham races in 1993. He had an oil pump problem in February and got beat out of the pits by Rusty's extremely fast pit crew. He led most of his laps in 1993 in the last 3 races, including 78 at Atlanta from the pole. 11. RaceFanX posted: 04.10.2009 - 10:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) T.W. Trickle would finish 5th at Atlanta for the team's first top 5. 14. 18fan posted: 04.01.2010 - 9:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Gant's decision to stay out 11 laps more than Earnhardt during a round of green-flag pit stops followed by the crash by Horton could very easily have decided the championship. Gant was about to lap Earnhardt when Dale came in, so Dale caught a major break and came back to almost run down Rusty at the end. 15. zuel660 posted: 11.17.2010 - 7:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Anyone know why Dave Marcis was running a Ford in this race? Earnhardt's crew swore up and down it was Rusty's car and Rusty's team was convinced it was the 3 car. It was a humorous attempt of gamesmanship. Ultimately, there was another caution immediately after for more oil down and to this day I'm not sure anyone knows who was responsible, lol. 18. Also very visible when he's involved in the wreck with T.W. Taylor. #71 Dave Marcis: sponsorship from Terramite, a WV backhoe manufacturer. Neil, Buddy & Mike recount a conversation where Dave offers them a 20% discount. Not sure if this was just on raw satellite feed or made broadcast. 19. Just because Jimmy got his only 2 Cup wins in 94 doesn't mean that was his best ride or best season. As a matter of fact the 94 season where Spencer drove the #27 McDonald's car for Junior Johnson could be argued to be the worst full time season of Spencer's career. Nearly every other important category outside of wins it ranks as the worst or near the worst. Worst average finish, tied for worst points finish with his last full time season in 2003, near the worst in DNF's per start, a DNQ, last in laps completed, and near the bottom with only 47 laps led despite winning twice. He only had 4 top 10s, the 2 wins plus a 4th place finish, all three at plate tracks, and the other top 10 was a 10th place finish at Atlanta. Junior's operation was fading quick and most of their attention went to the Bill Elliott car I'd say and not the Spencer car. The exact opposite could be said for Jimmy's only full season driving the #12 car for Bobby Allison in 1993. Nearly every category ranks as the best or near best for Spencer's full time Cup seasons in his career, including the most top 10s, most top 5s, highest points finish (12th), highest average finish by a full 1.2 positions over his 2nd best season in that category, and near the best in least DNF's, lead lap finishes per start and no DNQs. If you count the last 4 races of 92 where he drove the #12 for Allison it drives the point home of it being his best ride and not just his best season. This is counting Spencer's full time seasons only and not partial seasons like the middle 25 races of the 36 race 2004 season where he drove the #4 McClure car that wasn't sponsored for half of those races and the long time team was on its last legs. 20. Makes sense because they only attempted 5 races to get John experience but keep his rookie status intact and the fact that Terry Labonte was leaving the team at seasons end and John Andretti was the driver that Hagan chose to take over the #14 car for the 1994 season. At least until he went out of business or closed shop halfway through the season. 21. Harry was able to stay on the lead lap and finish fourth, but was noticeably disappointed after the race that the car went away at the end like it did. 23. Despite this damage it looked like he had one of the cars to beat, but on his first green flag pit stop his team had issues taking off the left rear tire and lost 3 laps. 25. RaceFanX posted: 03.16.2021 - 2:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) TNN did a special broadcast for this race as they focused more on pit crew members than normal. The fall Rockingham race was a good time to do so since this was the era when the pit crew challenge took place here in the lead up to this race. Rusty Wallace and Roger Penske's #2 Miller Genuine Draft team won the pit crew challenge and then showed their speed again in the pits Sunday as they helped Rusty to victory here. 26. RaceFanX posted: 03.16.2021 - 2:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty Wallace came into this race seeking a season sweep at Rockingham but he and the Penske team opted not to bring back the same #2 Miller Genuine Draft Pontiac Grand Prix he won with here in February. Instead the team unloaded Rusty's favorite car "Midnight" and when his most iconic stead was ready to gallop that was really bad news for everyone else. Wallace dominated the later stages of this race en route to the win as he continued his championship points battle against runner-up Dale Earnhardt. Midnight won 13 races in 28 starts between 1992 and 1994. Today the car is preserved at the NASCAR Hall of Fame as the car to represent Rusty Wallace after his induction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
