Matt posted: 01.31.2007 - 4:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's an article on Rodney's crash: Rodney Orr, a 33-year-old driver from Palm Coast, Fla., was killed today in a crash at Daytona International Speedway. Orr was the second driver to die in a crash on the 2.5-mile oval in four days. Veteran racer Neil Bonnett was killed in a one-car crash in turn four of the Daytona track on Friday. Orr, the defending Goody's Dash series champion who was hoping to make the field for his first Daytona 500, crashed during practice for Sunday's race. Track spokesman Larry Balewski said Orr sustained massive head and upper body injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:06 a.m. EST upon arrival at Halifax Medical Center. Witnesses said Orr's Ford Thunderbird flipped as it was going through turn two when it got loose on the apron at the bottom of the high-banked track. The driver's-side roof was the first part of the car to hit the wall. Orr was one of only seven drivers who has been above 190 mph in practice on the 2.5-mile oval. He is survived by his wife, Crystal, and a daughter, Ashton. Chip Williams, a spokesman for NASCAR, the sanctioning body of the Winston Cup division, said the two fatal crashes did not appear to be connected in any way. "There are a lot of theories out there in the garage area, but we don't have a theory right now," Williams said. Some drivers indicated that gusting winds might have had something to do with both of the fatal crashes, but Williams said, "We don't have any reason to think that the winds had anything to do with it. Gusty winds are kind of a tradition of (Daytona's) Speed Weeks and they don't affect these 3,500-pound cars all that much." Orr is the 27th fatality at the track that opened in 1959. 19. But then again, I guess maybe that's what it's all about and why the owners wanted it. The current owners don't want to feel threatened by outsiders, so they've insulated themselves and protected their presence in the sport, regardless of performance, to an extent. 73. nascarman posted: 06.26.2016 - 7:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Withdrawn: 52 / Jimmy Means / Napa Auto Parts / Jimmy Means / Ford -Means practiced and qualified the car but decided to retire from racing after his friend Neil Bonnett died. TW Taylor entirely gave up driving and went to car ownership having Derrike Cope and Jeremy Mayfield drive for him later on in the season. To go back to post 52, Fina did go onto the 80 of Horton after Baker missed the field. The 80 also took the blue paint scheme as well making the car look almost exactly like the 20 And addressing the tragic crashes of Orr and Bonnett -- Per news articles I have read and you can google, it seems relatively agreed that both had a failure in their shock absorbers, which would make sense why they would both lose control in the turn on a bumpy Daytona track going those speeds. A lot of people want to blame Hoosier, and people even want to blame experience but Im more inclined to believe it was the shock absorber failure that caused both crashes. It will never be confirmed, I believe Phoenix Racing totally dismantled and disposed of the #51 after they got it back from authorities and I do not believe that was a part that was checked. But dont quote me on that part of it. I remember watching this race at just about 10 years old, and I was so happy for Sterling for finally getting his first win. He had broken a record for most races run before winning, I believe the prior record was held by Dave Marcis 79. Todd Bodine's first race as a full-time Winston Cup racer saw him run great, leading early, until he put the new flaps to the test in a high-speed backstretch crash after he got turned into the wall by sophomore racer Jeff Gordon while running second, setting off a multi-car crash that also eliminated Bodine's brother Brett. The back of Todd's #75 came off the ground but the flaps worked to perfection and he did not roll over. Roof flaps were developed by Jack Roush and his team. During development the first test of the system saw a stock car taken to an airport and placed behind a NASCAR-owned jet aircraft with the plane's engines being fired up to simulate the 200 mile per hour winds a car could face in a spin. 89. Neil Bonnett had a fatal crash, so did Rodney Orr, and Andy Farr in ARCA, crashed roof first in turn 4, and was injured severely. Horrid speedweeks for drivers. 93. jp posted: 12.07.2018 - 10:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor Update: #14-John Andretti: Kanawha Insurance/Financial World/V-Line Source: http://www.rubbins-racin.com/forums/filedata/fetch?id=1533562&d=1533352927 94. McDuffie's death in the 1991 Watkins Glen race when McDuffie and Means' cars contacted prior to McDuffie losing control of his car in the moments leading to that fatality. 95. I ask because I had heard (from god knows where) that they had electrical issues with the car and never got on track. B: Does anyone know anything about Scott Brayton's entry? I know Thee Dixon owned it but did he run in practice? Does anyone know what the car probably looked like or have a picture? C: Did Mark Thompson manage any practice? I don't know if the Arca race was before any open practice or after. Also does anyone know what the car looked like? Would it have been red like the Global jet scheme he ran in Arca? 98. Only source I can find for that is Wikipedia, no driver with that name seems to exist. And it's not sourced on Wikipedia as well. So...went to look at the 1994 Daytona 500 page history there and it looks like the person that added McCrone's name to that article also edited several other articles to include names of people that would appear to be fictitious. Would have to say it sure seems like a hoax to me. 100. Only one Hoosier driver made the field through their 125 finish - Jimmy Horton. I'm not sure why Danny Sullivan is listed on the entry list. He didn't test. In fact, he didn't even sit in a stock car until a week before Daytona qualifying and that was on a short track. Here's an article stating he had no interest in racing in the Daytona 500. This was at January testing. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1994/01/18/In-a-career-that-included-17-race-victories-Danny/6898758869200/ 103. After coming up short for years, finishing second countless times especially in the early 90's while he competed for Junior Johnson and The Stavola Brothers. This day, though, belonged to the native of Columbia, Tennessee. Such a great win for someone that did not catch his big break until the end of the 80's, getting a full time ride and being able to show his true potential, especially at Daytona and Talladega, with great run after great run. Competing for a new team in Morgan-McClure Motorsports does not hurt, either. A great win to start a fantastic season. 104.
