If he hadn't run 10 races the year before, he would have been the '94 Rookie of the Year. 8. Thanks as always RR, love the new DNQ stats! 10. Ed posted: 01.16.2012 - 1:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Only time in his career that Jeff Gordon finished more than 3 laps down at Martinsville 11. Marlin had spun and was pulling back up the track but clipped Gordon's car. 12. 18fan posted: 12.01.2012 - 11:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kyle Petty had one of the best cars in this race until he had a serious brake problem just past the 300 lap mark. 13. Ivan Balakhonov posted: 01.11.2016 - 10:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Additional notes: - Rusty Wallace's form on short tracks in 1993-1994 was nothing short of amazing. In 12 races including this one, he posted 11 top-2 finishes (the lone exception being 7th in Bristol earlier that spring) with 6 victories. - For the third time in a row top two positions in Martinsville were shared by Penske South Racing and Robert Yates Racing (Rusty Wallace/Davey Allison - spring '93; Ernie Irvan/Rusty Wallace - fall '93; Rusty Wallace/Ernie Irvan - spring '94). - Harry Gant missed his first race since April 8th, 1990 (118 races). In 1990 he skipped Bristol because of death of his father. - For the first time since Daytona 500 track record wasn't shattered in qualifying. The reason: cool temperatures, tires didn't warm up. - When testing session was held in Martinsville earlier in April, Wood Brothers Racing brought three cars to the track. One of them was a chassis called "Ol' Ugly". It was used as far back as in 1989 by Neil Bonnett and during testing "Ol' Ugly" proved to be the fastest car among three. The Woods gave it a try in the race and Morgan Shepherd finished in top-5 despite of having his pits on the back stretch. Also: #63 car was owned by John Kieper. 16. myself posted: 03.11.2016 - 10:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why couldn't Gant use a provisional? 17. nascarman posted: 03.11.2016 - 11:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) There were only 2 provisional spots given and those were taken by Brett Bodine and Chuck Bown who were higher in points than Gant. Gant chose to withdraw his first round qualifying time and requalify on day 2 when conditions were better. He went slower and if he stayed with his first round time he would have made the race. 18. Bramblegrunt posted: 10.13.2016 - 10:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) There were actually a large number of teams that made that same mistake Gant made in withdrawing their time on day 1 to attempt day 2. Wally Dallenbach also was comfortably in and then attempted day 2 and did significantly worse knocking him out of the field. I believe Mike Wallace and Marcis also did the same, allowing a small team like Jay Hedgecock to get in. 19. In YouTube videos, you can see it rather prominently as the caution for Derrike Cope's spin comes out. 22. rm posted: 03.27.2021 - 7:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The All-Pro series was on the undercard for this race weekend, a race dominated by David Green. They didn't run like a typical support class would, though. Front-row qualifiers Mike Cope as well as Green put up laps quicker than Rusty Wallace did in qualifying for this race. In fact, the top 19 of 32 qualifiers from the All-Pro ranks could have timed into this race with laps faster than Dick Trickle did as the last car to make the show on speed. 23. RaceFanX posted: 03.27.2021 - 4:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 ASA never shared a weekend with NASCAR at MIS but I think the same situation happened when they ran there back in the 1980s, with the ASA cars being a little faster than their Cup counterparts. It's a result of powerful engines and lighter cars mainly meant for short tracks. 24. QFH posted: 04.07.2021 - 7:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #5 and #24 also involved in lap 150 caution 25. The race went slightly longer than their allotted window, so when Rusty took the checkered, it was a quick sign off and the broadcast was over just as Rusty was pulling into the pits. 26. Nowadays, a lot of races don't start until about that time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
