A little more than 30 laps into the race, Irvan laps Earnhardt who is running in the 30th position. A few laps later, Irvan gets over-anxious and spins himself and Ward Burton while trying to lap him. The ensuing spin allows Earnhardt to get back on the lead lap and make the necessary adjustments on his car under caution. The rest of the story tells in the race results. 10. Lets not forget when Davey had his accident and Ernie had his Earnhardt was leading both of them in the points. Davey won a lot, but he also wrecked a lot. And Earnhardt scored a lot of points in the 1994 season for that many races. I believe that was a record at the time, so no, it probably wouldn't have happened. 12. 10andJoe posted: 10.23.2012 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #34 owner: Frank Cicci 13. 23andJoe posted: 03.06.2014 - 1:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #38 owner: Doug Innis 14. Fords were consistantly faster in 1994, and Davey learned from 1992. Even in 1993 despite winning only once Davey was only a few points behind Earnhardt before his copter crash. No way does Earnhardt win cups in both 1993 and 1994 had Alan and Davey not died. 15. wrank fakefield posted: 05.29.2014 - 7:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) No one can ever know what would have happened had someone not died or gotten hurt. This race is a perfect example of why Earnhardt and Childress were so damn hard to beat for a championship by this point. Lapped only 38 laps in (befre Irvan gave the lap back by spinning out of the lead), a Petree call to sty out under caution got them track position, adjustments made the car competitive, and Earnhardt went to work finding a line around the track that would work for him, diamonding the turns, which allowed him to chase down and pass Irvan for the lead before Ernie crashed out. Rudd may have gotten Earnhardt for the win, but it was team efforts like this that Rusty Wallace and Penske South just couldn't match (and I speak as a Rusty Wallace fan). Earnhardt and Childress consistently minimalized adversity, while Wallace and Penske usually compounded adversity. 16. 23andJoe posted: 08.15.2014 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #34 owner: Frank Cicci (The team was not "Cicci-Welliver" until 1999.) 17. Earnhardt beat other drivers year in and year out because he could take junk cars and get top 10's and top 5's out of them and as this race showed he almost won. Some of Dale's rivals over the years couldn't beat him for the title because of his consistency. Tim Richmond, Davey Allison, Ricky Rudd, and Ernie Irvan could never handle the big picture racing like Dale could. Tbh, Rusty Wallace was really fortunate and lucky to win in 1989 because Dale had a lot of unlikely bad luck down the stretch that he normally didn't. Of course Earnhardt is going to be modest and say those guys might have beat him... 19. Ernie Irvan had a point when he criticized track's crew performance after the finish. He was one of the few drivers who used the bottom groove in turns, but during caution periods nobody swept it. The sweeping machines worked only on the middle part of track despite of the fact that Larry Mac repeatedly asked officials to clean the lower line too. Eventually, Irvan couldn't use his preferred groove, on lap 257 he collected marbles and went sideways, losing the lead to Earnhardt and dropping to P4. What happened next is history. 20. Cope's best finish in 1994 was a 16th in Darlington back in March. Cope's run with Cale was terrible with no top fives, no top tens, no pole awards but did lead 45 laps, 30 of which was in The Daytona 500 back in 1993. After this event, Jeremy Mayfield would take over the driving duties in the #98 machine while Cope would take over the #12 for Bobby Allison. 28.
